One of my favorite lines by Marvel has always been the What If? series... Simply because I like the whole damn concept of the series... The story-arc went this way, what if it went this other way?
Some of my fave What If comics were:
What If Wolverine had become Lord of the Vampires
What If the Marvel Superheros had lost Atlantis Attacks (one of the most depressing comics EVER)
What If Ironman had lost the Armor Wars
What If the Punisher had become Venom
What If Thor had gone to the Time of Conan (not sure if that's the exact title, but I'm too lazy to go dig it out of my comic box)
I've got at least a dozen more issued that I thoroughly and completely loved....
Okay, comic-geeks, what's your favorite What If issue?

I had this really bizarre issue back in the day called, Man-Spider. What if a spider was bitten by a radioactive man. It must have been the worst What If issue ever made but it pops in my head every now and then. A good one was What if the Xmen died on their first mission.

Tended to prefer DC's "Elseworlds" line, myself. Largely less cheesy than a lot of the "What If?" stories.
One of my faves was always Speeding Bullets: what would've followed if the infant Kal-El was found, not by Jonathan and Martha Kent, but by Thomas and Martha Wayne, and what would've happened if the Last Son of Krypton saw his parents murdered and--superpowers and all--embarked on the path of Batman.

Its not technically a what if, but it still is. I picked up Wolverine: Old Man Logan yesterday. It starts in Wolverine #66 and its 50 years in the future. Something very bad (don't know what yet) happend and killed all but a few of the heroes. The bad guys rule now. Wolverine (now only going by Logan) is still around but he's older and lives a life of solitude with his wife and 2 kids.
He's very passive now and doesn't want to fight, even though you can tell it bothers him. Theres a lot of anger under the surface. The first issue is just building the story, but the possibilities are endless here. It was great. I love the look of Logan and Hawkeye shows up with a proposition for Logan. I think its gonna be one of those "defeated by the world" hero ressurection stories. Theres a map of the U.S. on the last page that'll make you a giddy geek of their adventures their fixin to partake in. It's a very different map than what we know today.

looks pretty interesting. I read somewhere that Frank Miller's comic of TDK is about Batman coming out of retirement at age 50 to kick ass, I think seeing these guys working while out of their prime is always great.

Another good What If? that I like a lot is What If Professor X had become The Juggernaut... a spooky concept there... The most powerful telepath on earth with the power of the Juggernaut. It was a good issue.

I'm almost with Grendel. DC did it better in Armageddon 2001.
Marvel's What-If comics were way too needlessly sad and depressing for my liking.

TDK is one of the best comics of all time.... If you haven't read it, you should beg, borrow or steal the money to buy it...
... or just download it... heh..

The Dark Knight Returns has nothing to do with the film series, FYI.
As for What If?, What if Daredevil was deaf sounds pretty interesting.
