View Full Version : Minor / Major changes on UHM

This is where I will post all the minor or major changes on the regular site or message board.

The first minor change is for the regular site, where I will now include a "Related Films" category in all the individual movie pages. This will help people easily track back on any related movies, including previous installments and if it's a remake, the original versions.

BloodRayne 3 is the first test page with the minor change:

http://www.upcominghorrormovies.com/movies/bloodrayne3.php

Eventually all the movie pages will have it. If anyone else has any suggestions about the regular site, feel free to post'em here.

Now if you check the vBExperience section there's a Statistics menu which breaks down the top points users and what the points are based on. Hopefully this will help members get a better understanding on how the points system works.

The main social groups page has been modified, now listing the most popular groups and active groups. Also, the social group pages have been changed. Now the comments are moved to the top and moved the members and pictures to the right-hand side of the page.

Also, I'm aware that pictures can only be added to a group if they are in the person's album. There's currently no way around this that I'm aware of. If I can find a mod to enable users to simply upload or link a picture outside of UHM I will add it.

I upgraded the board to versions 3.7.3 which addresses more potential security flaws in the system. Users may be prompted to change their passwords upon logging in. This is to insure that members aren't using the same password as their usernames among many other things.

Added new smilies again recently.

As for the regular site, I've tweaked a couple minor things and now offer a "Share" button (below the rating box) on the newly-updated movie pages for easy access to share pages to other people via various social networks.

I'm also working on a UHM rss feed, for those of you who use feeders and would rather use that to get updates on the site, as opposed to emails.

UHM now has an RSS feed that will be the first thing to show the latest updates on the site.

If you like using RSS feeds rather than receiving emails or bulletins on myspace, I'd recommend subscribing, especially since it will be updated before all other said options.

Some may or may not have noticed the new star icon on the top right of the message box for the quick reply and post/reply boxes. That's the new "favorite smilies" feature.

It's basically as the name suggests, you click it to be sent to a page to choose up to 14 of your favorite smilies to be presented next to the text box for easy access.

You can also go to your User CP and edit your fav. smilies list in there. Enjoy!

Also, later today I will be implementing some new anti-spam mods that'll help prevent any spam-bots from registering and posting non-sense, and also prevent noobz from registering just to post links to their site. :thumbup3:

Aight, I've hopefully taken care of the spam problem without having to moderate new members. I've installed three different spam-prevention mods.

Two are within the registration process that will hopefully eliminate bots from registering.

The third requires a new member to have a required 5 posts before they can post links or images. This will hopefully stop people from just registering to spam their site or porn spammers from creating threads that link directly to some BS site.

If spammers still make it through somehow and spam the board then I will need to rework some of the requirements, but otherwise, this should prevent it from happening. We'll have to wait and see :smokin2:

So far, so good with the spammers. When I first added these spam blockers, it turns out that there was an error with registering, so people didn't register for a few days. I had to remove one of the spam mods and the one I'm still using seems to be effective enough, at least for now :hmmm:

Added a social bookmarking option on the bottom of all threads now. If anyone has a service they like to use that isn't listed then lemme know and I'll see about adding it. I'm working on adding some more, but I'm not sure what people like to use most, so I just picked some of the more familiar ones :shrugs:

I think I've pretty much got the bookmarks covered until I feel there are more popular ones I'm missing, but it's unlikely they'll be used much anyway, so it doesn't really matter.

Anyway, I've removed some of the clutter on the top navigational bar and I've added icons to many parts of the board, more specifically the User CP area to give it a look that's easier on the eyes. :thumbup3:

FrighT MasteR
10-26-2008, 05:20 PM
I've created a 'What Movie is This?' forum specifically for people who just want to know the title of a horror flick. I thought it'd be easier for users to get responses if they made an entirely new post instead of having to reply in the single thread in Horror Talk. :thumbup3:

I suppose you've never been to the thread Mike. Yes, it's very active, and people will always ask about movies they saw growing up. I get emailed about it all the time, and now I'll just direct them to the forum.

Anyway, I had to remove the icons for the User CP, as it deleted the Favorite Smilies link for some reason. :myhead:

I'm proud to announce a great new addon for the site. Online radio!

Yes, on the top navigational bar you'll see a Radio & TV link, where you can listen to live streaming online radio stations. Currently there aren't any TV stations listed, as I'm not sure how this will effect the site's bandwidth, so I'm not going to introduce streaming TV until later on (if all goes well).

If there's a station you like to listen to online or locally then feel free to let me know. I will try to add it to the on-going list. You can also add stations to your favorites for easy access to them. In your profile it'll list your fav. stations and the station you last listened to.

NOTE: You may need to download a plug-in to get it working at first, but it should work for everyone. If you run into troubles then let me know. Otherwise, enjoy!
