View Full Version : The Author you've read the most books by...

I got to thinking about it the other day, that there are a handful of authors that I've read the hell out of. Book after book after book.... something just keeps me coming back.

As for what author I've read the most of, I'd say it would be a toss-up between King and Koontz... not because I consider them the ultimate best of writers... actually quite the contrary... but I do consider them good quality literary junk-food (especially Koontz).

After I finish a good thought-provoking, cerebral piece of literature, I tend to prefer my next book to be something light, thoughtless and basically just entertaining. Something to cleanse my mental palette before diving into deeper, more thoughtful fare. King and Koontz tend to fit the bill perfectly in that endeavor.

Although I'd only consider a small handful of either author's work to be totally righteous mind-blowing reading, it must be said that it has been a very rare occasion that I found one of their books to be a truly awful, regrettable waste of my time.

Most often King and Koontz deliver what I expect from them... simple entertainment. Something interesting to read, while I'm taking a shit.

So... avid readers, what author would you say you've read the most books by and why do you keep coming back for more?

Definately King, I've read pry 15 of his novels/short story collections. The reason I always read him is that he's got a real way with imagery he paints a pretty vivid picture at times.

I only started counting what I read at the beginning of what I read last year, and out of the 33 books or so I've read the most I've read by any author is 2 or 3 books. However when I was a child I read the shit out of goosebumps. I read probably about 20 or so even though I figured out the pattern in book 5 or so. I remember my favorite was part fantasy, where this boardgame all sucked some people into this fantasy realm. However I remember it ending with this huge cliffhanger and I just wanted to hit someone in the face. I never read any R.L. Stine again. Didn't he write some adult novels too?

I wouldn't call King thoughtless. He usually has something to say about life in all his works, he doesn't preach, but it's in there.

Out of all the books I've read the most by one author would be Chuck Palahniuk, followed by William Gibson.

Luris Blear
07-09-2008, 08:02 PM
Terry Goodkind, easily.

Second -- couldn't say. Robert Asprin, William Gibson, and Douglas Adams all kind of mash together around there.

I suppose it's R.L. Stine 'cause I read pretty much every Goosebumps book as a younglet. Then Stephen King. I'm also a Bret Easton Ellis completist, anxiously awaiting the publication if Imperial Bedrooms, and working my way through the stuff by Nathanael West, Hunter S. Thompson, Dostoyevsky, Sartre, P.K. Dick, Joan Didion and Ernest Hemingway. It's weird, you would think a list like this would expose peoples' favorite authors, but pop fiction and fantasy writers win by default through the sheer volume of their works.

I read a lot of Stephen King and Simon Clark.

I like Simon Clark a little better though, his stories are just as good as Stephen Kings, but much less detail. My favorite book by Simon Clark is Blood Crazy and that book just gets right into the story, I mean within the first five pages a mom is eating her kids face off and the rest of the book is like this. He is also an easy read as well.

Did Clark write a book about some dude fighting people that were turning into duplicates of himself?

If so, I found his style a bit too damn flippant in that book... Seriously, dude watches his mom drown right in front of him, and he's like "OH GOD NO!!!... Okay fuck it.. la de da..."

Stephen King for sure I have read 20+ books/collections by him and I'm in the process of collecting all his hardcovers. R.L Stine would come in second just because I read nothing but the Goosbumps as a kid. Brian Keene would be third (and eventually be boosted to second). I love everything he has written and love how all the stories are connected and leading up to a his 13 volume Labryinth series.

By far Robert R. McCammon for me. Best book I have ever read is Swan Song, which is like The Stand but pulled off in a better way. Once you read the first few pages of this masterpiece you will be hooked.

Also They Thirst is quite possibly the best vampire book ever written in my opinion.

Another book of note is Boy's Life, which is an amazing coming of age tale that has a little bit of everything in it.

Other McCammon books:
Stinger- Out of print.
The Wolf's Hour
Night Boat (Nazi Zombies.)- Out of print.
Ushers Passing (One of the creepiest haunted house books ever written.)- Out of print.
