With new episodes set to air in January to finish off the 5th season, FX has ordered an additional 19 for 6th and final season of the show. The show will reportedly end its run with a total of 100 episodes in early 2011.
Asked why he decided to bring "Nip/Tuck" to an end, Landgraf said he doubts any FX drama would ever run beyond 100 episodes, saying that serialized dramas have a much different storytelling model than nonserialized shows such as "Law & Order" or CSI.
"If you tried to do 150 episodes of 'The Sopranos, ' you would begin to diminish the quality of those shows," he said. "The David Chases ('Sopranos') and Shawn Ryans ('The Shield'), they're taking on social commentary and grand sweeping questions. If we want to go after that brass ring, we have to accept they have limited shelf life.
It's sad that The Sopranos didn't exactly end on a high note, as the final season was a huge disappointment for me and many other fans of the series.
I was actually going to stop watching Nip/Tuck, because the last season and the one we're still on have definitely shown that the writers are pretty much out of material as-is. The 4th season was just filled with nonsense that didn't lead to anything and the current season has its hits and misses, but a lot of the storylines are starting to repeat themselves.
With news that the series is coming to an end, I might just stick around to see it to the end. If this season ends horrible like the last then I will likely give it up before the final season, but it's all up to how the storyline pans out. :hmmm:
