I have had my laptop going on 3 years now and its a Toshiba and McAfee came installed with it, thing is I never activated it and just recently just started getting popups and thought maybe I have a few viruses in the system. Thing is, I am a cheap bastard and I like things free rather than pay for it. People have suggest downloading AVG for free and using that and deleting all aspects of McAfee from the system.
What do you reckon I do? Do you think I have viruses? Should I just shell out the money for McAfee or download AVG for free and delete the other?

I have AVG on my laptop and desktop and don't have any problems with them.
I let McAfee expire on both computers, I'm cheap too

Agreed just get AVG. It'll cover you for your virus and spy-ware needs.

I've used Avast for years and haven't had any issues. For firewall, I'd recommend Online Armor. Both programs are free

I wouldn't say you have a virus but you could possibly have malware, spyware, and trojans here and there which all can be fixed easily with programs. Do you find your laptop or internet being a little slower?
Bedogsexor
08-11-2008, 04:11 AM
Yes the internet is a tad slower...so should I completely delete all aspects of McAfee from the system? And will AVG help with the existing problem or just fix future ones?

I chatted online with Geek Squad and they just suggest I stick with McAfee and activate it, saying you get what you pay for and that having 2 anti-viruses on my computer won't help any...

Here's what you do:
Save any files you want to an outside source (USB stick, external hard drive, etc) Get yourself a copy of windows or your system recovery disc and start from scratch.
Format the system
fresh operating system
no problems and your computer runs as new
or just do what fright has been saying...

Is DIVX a safe program? I usually watch movies on it and I kept getting a pop up saying I needed the latest version to watch some movies and just downloaded it. I assume its free since it didn't ask for any of my info and the older one was. What is weird is it gave me a free upgrade to IE 7, is this normal? Should I delete all of this?

If it doesn't help the freezing then it'll at least speed up your computer a little. I'd also recommend actually opening your comp up and cleaning all the dust in there. A can of compressed air should do the trick nicely :thumbup3:
