View Full Version : PayPal is like a mosquito bite to the finger

...it's so much more annoying than it should be.

Recently, I sold a shit load of road bike wheelsets on eBay to raise some extra funds for a new road bike. In all, I sold about $1,900 worth of items. The auctions ended August 3rd.

So in comes PayPal, which I haven't used in about two years (outside of my UHM donation), and now I remember why.

First, they charge me $65 in fees from my winnings. I knew there would be fees, but goddamn, that's like a tank and a half of gas. Mind you, this is after eBay gets $25 from me for posting everything. They're the same fucking company. That's $90 out the window to eBay/PayPal.

Of course, I didn't let that bother me too much. Why? Well, the reason why PayPal is great, and you pay those fees, is it's quicker access to the funds than waiting for a money order. That is, unless they randomly decide otherwise.

Two of my transactions went for over $500. Because of that (which they never mentioned when I registered), I have to wait 21 days for the funds to be cleared. In all, it's about $1,200 I'm waiting for. That means I won't have access to the funds until August 26th, because the buyers paid me on August 5th.

All that said, please think again about why I decided to even sell these wheelsets; to get a new road bike. However, because I can't get access to the funds until August 26th, I can't pick up my dust-collecting bike until then. I could front the money, but I don't want to chance $900 right now in case PayPal decides to drop another bomb on my transactions.

So, because of PayPal, I'm losing 3 weeks worth of riding on my new bike. Up in New England, that gives me until maybe the middle of October to ride, which is a whole 1.5 months before it's too cold/snowy out. If I had the buyers send me money orders, I would have had the money not only sooner (which is pathetic, if you think about it), but I wouldn't have lost $65 in fees!

I didn't want to post this in the "Vent Here" thread because I know others have PayPal horror stories, and I'd love to hear them. I want to call PayPal's asses, but unfortunately, I know I would just get some Indian customer service representative who's not really the one at fault for the powers-that-be.

Fuck PayPal and fuck eBay. It's Craig's List and money orders for me from now on.

Also, fuck the US Post Office. 7 business days guaranteed! is total bullshit if you ship across the country. One of my buyers has been waiting 10 days and is completely down my throat about it.

So many greedy, worthless motherfuckers in this country! They want your money but shun you when it comes to delivering the actual service.

Been using Paypal for years and haven't really had any trouble with them. I don't think I've ever had a transaction over $500 before, so I wouldn't know about this hold.

Yeah, all of mine were below that until now. I had a bunch of $10-$200 transactions years ago, but never some this high.

What a pain in the ass. I actually just realized that once the funds clear on the 26th, I'll actually have to wait another 4 days for the funds to transfer to my bank account. It'll be September before I get the freekin' bike.

The fees do suck but isn't that why people put crazy amounts of shipping costs?

Repetitive, but I've never had any problems with Paypal. Come to think of it, I really don't use it all too much.

Never had a problem with PayPal. I actually prefer it. I also haven't had transfers over 200 bucks before so :shrugs:.

Only been a buyer with those folks, but the fees don't seem that surprising to me. That $90 comes out to less than 5% of the total sale.

I just placed an order with Newegg. Typed in my shipping info. Used Paypal to pay for it.

Paypal sent them some old shipping info.

NewEgg chose to use Paypal's word over mine. The package went to a house that isn't even there any more.

Oh this is good. I tried to delete the old address. "You can't do that. There is a credit card attached to that address." An expired credit card. I tried to delete that. "You can't do that. You have transactions pending." On a card that expired eighteen months ago?

There's something really wrong happening here.
