I just got back from a well deserved trip to (Croatia) Europe. Nice to be 'round family and friends that I haven't seen in years. Haven't gone anywhere for years really on a vacation. Was wondering where you people have been going. Seems like alot of people I know are going to Atlantis in the Bahamas. From what I understand it's really expensive there and is more family oriented than it is for people looking for a Spring Break atmosphere. So, where's everyone been going?

Visited a family friend down in NC, and took day trips to Harpers Ferry, WV and Lancaster. That's about it.

Very nice town. The hills are a bitch to walk up though. Luckily most of the stuff there is to see is at the bottom of the hill at the river's edge.

The other thing I forgot to mention is that the Appalachian Trail goes right through the town. So if you're a hiker, you can walk as much of the trail as you'd like.

Pretty long ass trail though.

Oh, I know. I interviewed several people who'd done it when I worked for a newspaper a couple years ago. That's why I said summer - typically, it takes from April -> October to finish it. But I LOVE hiking, so I'd be down.

Northbound: Georgia to Maine

Most thru-hikers start their trips in early March or April at Springer Mountain in Georgia and finish at Katahdin in September. Starting at Springer in March guarantees hiking in winter conditions for much of the first several weeks and also guarantees a crowd of fellow northbounders—in 2005, about 1,400 thru-hikers started from Springer.

A typical northbounder, starting in March or April and finishing in September, can expect:

* Starting among crowds of other thru-hikers—thirty or more a day.
* Cold weather to start, with some snow or ice, but occasional warmer weather in Georgia.
* Snow, sometimes deep, at high elevations throughout North Carolina and Tennessee.
* Bare trees and winter conditions at high elevations for the first month or two. Cold-weather gear is usually advised until you have hiked beyond the Mt. Rogers high country in southwest Virginia.
* Hot, humid weather though the mid-Atlantic states.
* Favorable temperatures through most of southern New England.
* Periods of cold weather in New Hampshire and Maine in September and October.
* A dramatic ending: Katahdin.

To avoid crowds, the optimal time to start a northbound thru-hike is after April 15; however, since the average thru-hiker takes six months to finish, this can mean cutting it close: Baxter State Park in Maine is closed from October 15 to May 15, and the Appalachian Trail up Katahdin is closed on any day when the weather makes hiking there dangerous.

If you are hiking northbound and you reach Harpers Ferry, West Virginia, after July 15, you should consider a “leapfrog” or a “flip-flop” hike, unless you have covered the first thousand miles in two months or less. From Harpers Ferry, you still have almost 1,200 miles to go, and, once you reach the White Mountains in New Hampshire, your mileage from there north through most of Maine will drop by a third. If you continue northward from Harpers Ferry after July 15, you may have to hike faster than you'd like or face having to finish your hike another year.

It's definitely a hike!

Went to NC and Washington DC over the summer. Kind of a vacation, though I've been to both a ton of times already. Supposed to be going to Japan next summer with my friend.

Went to Los Angeles a few times, and to my family's cabin in Utah which is always a nice get-away. Spring break I'm going to try and save up to go to Savannah, Georgia and then hopefully Toyko next winter.

(Tokyo may become London though. It's still up in the air.)

I won't be going again until May. Going to do the same thing I do every year. 4 days of old fashioned pen & paper gaming.

I'm legitimately happy you guys seem to be having fun.

Went to KC this summer and drank a ton of beer with War...good times. Last year went to Ireland and had a great time. Waiting for the dollar to pick up so we can head back over there.

We went to Daytona Beach with the in-laws again this year. My husband and I went to an actual record store....it was cool because we don't have anything like that around here. We blew over $70 on records. We also went to Sea World, which was amazing for me. We got over 600 great pictures. For the most part, I had a good trip.

I used to love Daytona in the early 90's. Died out somewhat. Not sure about today though. I know the record stores you're talking about...you can find anything, used, in good condition, and cheap.

I vacationed in Hell. Rather charming if I do say so myself. The abode of condemned souls and the eternally wicked. The Underworld...ahhhh...made reservations for next year.

Hit Portland and Seattle this summer. My first time in the Pacific northwest, and it could be my new favorite region. Mountains, ocean, fantastic food...tough to go wrong, out there.

My cousin lives in Seattle. Started his own contracting business. Can't wait to go visit him and check out the clubs in Seattle. I'm sure there are some really good bands out there.
