View Full Version : Sleep - Get Enough?

I sleep about 6 hours a day, sometimes more but still seem to be tired all the time. My doctor tells me it's one of 2 things...not enough REM sleep or I snore. Well it's both. Stress causes the lack of REM sleep and a small in office operation will take care of the snoring.
BTW,
Definition of REM sleep
REM sleep: REM sleep is the portion of sleep when there are rapid eye movements (REMs).
Dreams occur during REM sleep. We typically have 3 to 5 periods of REM sleep per night. They occur at intervals of 1-2 hours and are quite variable in length. An episode of REM sleep may last 5 minutes or over an hour. About 20% of sleep is REM sleep. If you sleep 7-8 hours a night, perhaps an hour and half of that time, 90 minutes, is REM sleep.
REM sleep is characterized by a number of other features including rapid, low-voltage brain waves detectable on the electroencephalographic (EEG) recording, irregular breathing and heart rate and involuntary muscle jerks.
By contrast, NREM (non-REM) sleep is dreamless sleep. During NREM, the brain waves on the EEG are typically slow and of high voltage, the breathing and heart rate are slow and regular, the blood pressure is low, and the sleeper is relatively still. NREM sleep is divided into 4 stages of increasing depth of sleep leading to REM sleep. About 80% of sleep is NREM sleep. If you sleep 7-8 hours a night, all but maybe an hour and a half is spent in dreamless NREM sleep.
You getting enough sleep?
Some of you mofos seem to be on the board 24/7

I'd say I get adequate sleep; usually around 7-8 hours (which is apparently the recommended duration). One of the problems I seem to have is falling a sleep way too early and waking up really early. I usually pass out around 10:30PM and get up around 6:00AM. My mind is so used to this routine, that I find it sometimes hard to break and stay up later than usual, as well as sleep-in a lot later than usual. :shrugs:
I get very little.
3-4 hours tops.
Im going to try to sleep more in the future though. I'll change afew habits.
i sleep prolly like 8 hours or so..but not at once..all threw out the day..
i work from about 4ish am to about 8/9ish am..but on tues and thurs i have class at at 10am..monday i dont have a class..i ahvea online class on wed(so i can do that whenever on wed) and on friday i have a class at night..on tues and thurs i usally leaqve work and go right to school..then after school i sleep till whenever..get up around 8 or 9 pm and stay up till work..days i dont haev class at 10 am i jusallu just go right to sleep aftrer work till whenever my class is..
fuckd up schedule i know..im starting to confuse my days and ive only been doin this work/school simultaneously for about a week now..gonna be brutal come winter..

i def don't get enough, i average 3-4 hours a night.
if that.
Usually I get anywhere from 6.5 - 7.5 hours of sleep per night. Usually I'll get 8 hours on weekends.
I find that I can never hit the gym and get a good workout in if I haven't gotten at least 7 hours of sleep. Anything less and I drag ass and take too long between sets.
I would like to start getting about 8-9 hours per night, which is what you should be getting, minimum, if you lift weights. When you lift, the longer you sleep the more muscle and muscle endurance you build. Your body builds muscle when you sleep after a workout, and getting up too soon can stunt your body from repairing and rebuilding the muscle you've basically destroyed during your workout.
My problem is I feel like I never have enough time to myself when I get to bed early. I'm up for work at 7am, I get home from work at about 6:30pm, and if I hit the gym, I'm there usually from about 7:30pm (after eating dinner, getting my gym stuff together, and actually getting to the gym) until 9pm. Then, I drive home, shower, and before I know it, it's 10pm. If I want to sleep 8 hours, I would have to be in bed within an hour later.
Work takes up SO much of your time every day. Work days should be 7 hours long and four days a week. I'd wager most people can get as much done busting their ass 28 hours a week as they do taking their time at 40. If they can't, THEN they should come in for the fifth day.
Random thought: When you really think about it, assuming most people here are blue collar folks, we all get raped when it comes to work vs. money earned. You lose the prime hours of your life everyday just so you can have a house to sleep in and food in your belly that'll keep you alive to do it all again the next day. The only true prize is two weeks paid vacation, which not even everyone gets. And for those who do, you hardly feel at ease because all you can think about is how the grind will be returning in T-14 days.
We're one of the most overworked countries in the world, yet so many of us find ourselves with little in terms of possessions but plenty in terms of financial debt. Does that equation not seem to work for anyone else?
Sorry for the randomness, but to answer the original question, yes, I need more sleep.

I do not get enough sleep. I sleep about 4-5 hours. When it gets to be too much..Ambien helps.

Certainly, but I'm speaking in terms of what you get for your hard work. Really, the truth is, hard work rarely pays off. And when you do reap the benefits of your labor, it's really the persistence that pays off, not the hard work itself.
Sleep?? Ill sleep when im dead. :nosleep:

I have some sort of sleep disorder going on and it's been going on for the 7 months or so... I generally average about 4 hours a night... some nights I'll get 5 hours, some nights I get only 2 hours and EVERY night I wake up constantly throughout my sleep cycle, regardless of how long I sleep...
... luckily, I've got a sleep-study scheduled for this Friday night and hopefully they'll be able to help me get this shit straightened out.
I'm friggin exhausted all the time and it makes it a nice little slice of hell dealing with my kids and work and just about everything else.
Beer doesn't even help... and that's my cure for everything...
This sucks so bad...

Good luck on the study dude. I hope they determine what causes your sleeping problems. Maybe it will help you sleep better knowing that those performing the study cannot sleep and have to watch you sleep all night long. :D
probably about 4-5 hours. every time i try i toss and turn for a long time until i finally sleep and next thing its 6 o clock

Yeah I do. I get about 10-12 hours. I sleep most of the day. I go to bed around 4 and wake up around 3-4. I don't like morning. Don't like what's on t.v, don't like the food in the morning, don't like the sunshine that early in the morning. Afternoons to about 4 a.m. = perfect for me.

Usually between 6-7 hours.
Could definitely use more, but hitting the sack before 12:00 rarely seems to happen.

I'm in bed from times up to a solid 12 hours. But of that time that I'm actually sleeping, is only about 3-4. The rest of the time I wake up every 10-15 minutes and basically look around the room for a bit, maybe roll around a couple of times, then try and get back to sleep. I've been like this for as long as I can remember.
ijust woke up from a nap..fuck i drool like a mo fucka in my sleep :D
woke up with my face in a puddle basically

I have a lot of sleeping issue's I just recently FINALLY got into a somewhat normal sleeping pattern, I try to get to sleep around 11:00pm, but usually fall asleep around 1:00am. Then I have to be up at 6:00am. So lately I've been doing better, BUT i could relapse back into the sleeping dissorder I was told I have, Sleep Phase Delay Syndrome, my sleeping pattern for a while was, I'd fall asleep around 5 or 6am and eventually wake up around 4, 5, 6, or even 7pm. it was horrible, I never realized either how much not get enough sleep and having a horrible sleeping pattern can fuck with your head. I had to see my doctor many times over the last 2 years for many different things that apparently were caused by my sleeping pattern, well that and my diet. So hopefully I can keep this sleep pattern going, just the only thing I dont like right now since my body is getting used to it, is when I get home i fall asleep for about 4 hours, wake up again, eat, and go back to sleep.

She says I'll be snoring like a friggin chainsaw then I stop breathing for a few seconds, choke, then start breathing again, then snoring again and the cycle starts anew...

Sometimes I awake from catching myself snoring. That has me a tad worried.
some times in high school i would fall asleep with my elbow on my desk and my hand holding my head and i would dream that i was falling..and right before i hit the ground in my dream, i would wake up and almost hit my head on ym desk but i would wake up just in time
i would always look around to see if any one caught me doing that, only a few times people saw and they were usually friends..they would just laugh at me..

Finally got the results back from my sleep-study yesterday.... Looks like I have obstructive sleep apnea. They said when I'm sleeping on my side, I stop breathing an average of 15 times an hour and when I'm sleeping on my back, I stop breathing an average of 40 times an hour.
Personally, I find that to be a bit disconcerting...
I have to go back in on the 10th of October to have another study done and they'll be trying the CPAP on me... I don't relish the idea of having to sleep with a mask strapped to my face, but if it fixes the problem, I guess I'm willing to give it a shot.
