The best Joker story ever written, without any competition. Written by Alan Moore, (Watchmen, V for Vendetta), this little tale tells two stories. The story happening in the stream of consciousness is of the Joker trying to prove to the world that "all it takes is one bad day to drive the sanest man alive to lunacy." The other story shows us what could have happened to make a simple, sane man become the Joker. He has no playing cards, no purple suits, he's just a man trying to get a better life for him, his wife, and his unborn child. All the events in his life culminate into one acid bath and creates this.

There was a deluxe edition released early this year with a spiffy new hardcover and Brian Bolland's original color scheme.

This was the main source of material that Heath Ledger was given and once you read it, you'll see the similarities in how the character was portrayed. It's 40+ pages long, so its no regular comic. Very psychological and one of the best comic stories ever written.
