Last year my older son - then three - sat across from me at the table while we counted his haul of candy. I asked him about next year, and he replied, "I be Batman, you be Joker!" His yet unborn brother was assigned the role of Robin.

We did most of our shopping today. At this point I just need to buy green RIT dye, a wig, and face paint.

My oldest son has his new Batman costume as of today.

The Robin costume for the youngest is now on its way from Target's web site.

The Joker costume is being pieced together. At this point everything except the wig and the green dye is either in the "costume bucket", on its way from the Internet, or waiting to be sewn together(vest & tie).

That Dark Knight Joker costume they are selling sucks. I thought about starting with it and just buying some makeup, but it really, really sucks. So I'm doing it better on my own for about the same price.

So, my son has been planning since Halloween night 2007. My brother has over half of his set list ready for his 4 hour radio show.

Anyone else getting ready for the special day yet?

I'm havin a halloween part at my place and I'm either gonna be the Postal Dude or I'm gonna be a werewolf in human form. Just very feral lookin with long hair, nails, fangs and shit like that. Found some great contacts and a trench coat for it.

I haven't figured out what I will be this year. I was a zombie last year...gotta stay up to par with last year, because my costume was cool. I gave thought to the classics like witches and vampires, but I'm not in the mood for that....*shrugs*

Yeah, the Joker is going to be common. I'd do something else but my son has been begging since Halloween night 2007.

That's a big part of why I'm going for the comic book style. (The other part being my remaining dislike of the TDK look, no matter how well Ledger did with the role.)

I have to recommend finding one in person just to see what an awful joke that costume is. Just don't buy it.

My son and I have done matching costumes the couple of years. I'm just enjoying this while it's still "cool" for him.

2006: He was Snape, I was Malfoy.
2007: He was Spider-Man, I did the Captain America costume.
2008 will be Batman / Joker / Robin.

I buy/make and keep the costumes too. It's fun to do on a cold, rainy day.

Funny you made this thread, Luris, I was just going to do the same the other day but then got sidetracked.

I actually haven't rocked the Myers getup since I was a kid in middle school, so I decided to bust the costume out again this year.

I JUST bought this beaut a few days ago (and paid some decent coin for it):

That mask rocks. The coveralls look good too. (I used to 'season' that kind of Halloween clothes by putting them on a dirt road and running the car over them a few times.)

Last year one of the neighbors dressed as Michael Meyers and played tricks on people from the balcony. The coveralls were probably a size too big, so he could stand still and look like a cheap decoration.

THAT was great.

Got three costumes this year... for parties and events i feel like doing i will be going as TDK joker which yes i know its common but i have this awesome new friend who loves to do make up... and this is a great chance to have fun with her.

My back up if she cant do the make up is to just wear a custom star trek shirt that my friend is also making for me. I am talking original series too, which is so awesome.

As for halloween night we are doing a big scary thing at my house and i will be done up like a crazy docotor with a gas mask... lots to do and plan for.

Hmm...I'm not sure about my costume this year. Last year I went as Bernie from Weekend at Bernies. That was a blast, I had people asking to hold me up in pictures all night long. I even went to a Fiery Furnaces concert on halloween night and made the lead singer smile at me when I did the Bernie dance.

Anyway, this year, I'm not sure. I just watched Gangs of New York again and wouldn't mind going as Bill the Butcher.

My costume:

Finished(?): Nothing.

To do:
Finish sewing the vest together.
Sew the tie together.
Dye pants and coat purple.
Dye shirt Green

Waiting on my wig and coat now.

I'm effectively going for this kind of look:
http://www.comicvine.com/detective-comics-the-laughing-fish/37-112800/

With the only exception being the hair. I want the hair to more resemble the cover of the old Greatest Joker Stories Ever Told: http://www.comictreadmill.com/CTMBlogarchives/2004/2004_Individual/2004_02/000249.php

We'll see when it all gets put together, I guess. Note to self: Need purple fabric for tie.

Luris Blear
09-27-2008, 03:18 PM
Okay. Cheap purple pants. Here's what I did right (80% of it) and what I did wrong (d'oh!)

Target has (had?) Legendary Gold brand khakis for sale. About $12 if you're normal sized, $14 for big guys. Like me. They come in two shades of khaki - plain khaki and a sickly pale khaki. Get the sickly pale ones. Pick some of those up then head to the laundry department. Get some RIT brand Whitener and Brightener. You also, of course, want some Purple colored RIT dye. I couldn't find any at Target, but the grocery store and fabric store both had some. I suggest two boxes of purple, at about $2.25 or $2.50 each.

You'll want a bucket if you don't have one already. 5 gallons at least. About $6 where I found one. White if at all possible.

Day 1 Pour hot water, whitener, and a goodly amount of bleach into the big bucket. Set outside. Dunk the pants in. Stir occasionally. I left mine out for about six hours. Wash and dry with a load of whites. Use more bleach in the washing machine. Wash your bucket.

Day 2. Mix RIT dye in hot water with 1 cup of salt and 1 TBSP of detergent, per directions on package. In the bucket of course. Drop in pants and stir. The box says 30 minutes. I left mine in for about 90 while attempting to sew the vest together. Drain bucket. Wash and dry on a light cycle with other purple garments. My wife had three purple shirts getting a fresh blast of purple for the cause.

Recap:
Cheap pale khakis RIT whitener & Brightener (1 bottle) Bleach (I used about 2-3 cups) RIT purple dye (2 boxes) 1 Cup of Salt 1 Tablespoon of Detergent Bucket Total Investment: Around $25 ($30 if you need a new bucket) and a few hours spread out over two days.

Last Thoughts (Where I went wrong): I used to dye my own shirts in order to have bright-colored clothes. Back in the day I used to leave them in the bucket overnight. I should have done that with the pants.

I don't know if this will help anyone, but the chances seem slim that you can find any quality purple trousers for any worthwhile price.

I'll admit it: I'm Nicholson sized again. I finished the vest today, and decided to try what I have of the costume on:

http://www.upcominghorrormovies.com/uhm/picture.php?albumid=156&pictureid=3040

And with the hat: http://www.upcominghorrormovies.com/uhm/picture.php?albumid=156&pictureid=3041

From the top down: $7 Pimp hat, with the ugly leopard print band ripped off. $30 wig (ebayed from Hong Kong, $10 + $20 shipping) $26 jacket ($21 for white doctor's medical jacket + shipping via ebay and $4 for the liquid purple dye) $17 shirt ($13 white shirt, $3 green dye, tax) $4 vest ($2 material, $1 thread, $1 buttons. Sewn together over the course of two weekends.) $22 pants ($14 very pale khakis, $3 color remover, $5 dye).Prices are all estimates, but for the money it blows the hell out of that awful TDK Joker costume that has been making the rounds.

Again, I wanted the Laughing Fish / Five Way Revenge kind of look, and that's coming along nicely. There's also going to be a lot of salads and exercise in the next twenty five days. :(

When I did this I researched and printed out a half dozen pics off the internet, much like the ones you have. The more I tinkered with it, the more it came out like Romero. Plus I probably just have facial features that lends itself to that end anyway.

I don't wear this nearly as well as Searcher -- marriage has caught up to me.

The white makeup was a test run -- next time I'll lay it on thicker and cover my neck all the way. I didn't want to mess up the wig or shirt last night, though.

I eat well -- it's all a matter of getting away from my desks from time to time.

Nothing a little bit of exercise couldn't take care of.

Very clever, Mike, but I'm still not buying your treadmill. :mhehe:

Honestly, I need to fight with at least two people to get a half hour to myself most of the time. But it probably is time I start fighting.

The floppy lab coat makes you look like some kind of wacky scientist or kid's show host. Did you check out goodwill for a good sport coat? They've got 'em in every color of the rainbow even purple.

I have a feeling that purple sport coats are going to be in very, very short supply at Goodwill this year. Didn't even try.

I'm going Trick Or Treating with a 4 year old whose mask only covers his face.

The lab coat was a goofy touch, but will also save money so the same 4 year old can get more swag for Christmas.

To me, the wig is even worse. :mhehe:

Think He'd lend me the bowtie?

And like I said, every color of the rainbow. Or you could always dye one. Would look better than a lab coat (People will think you're the Ghost of Professor Green Jeans) and would set you back $2-4 tops.

It's possible the 4 year old may remember this the rest of his life, you're doing a great job.

Kind of like the Captain America to match his Spider-Man last year.

We have a blast, and I'm enjoying it as long as he thinks it is cool.
