THE DOCTOR’S DIAGNOSIS
DEMON KNIGHT
DIRECTORS: Ernest R. Dickerson & Gilbert Adler
CAST: Billy Zane, William Sadler, Jada Pinkett Smith
RELEASE YEAR: 1995
(POSSIBLE SPOILERS WARNING!)
This is my first review and I decided to do one of my favorite films Tales from the Crypt Presents Demon Knight.
I really enjoy this movie. It has a great story, gore, bad ass looking demons, a kick ass hero, and an even more kick ass villain. Billy Zane plays, what I can only assume is, a head demon, known only as The Collector, and he’s chasing after William Sadler’s character Brayker. Brayker has the final key of seven that, when brought together in the possession of the demons, gives the demons power over the cosmos and then are able to cover darkness over the Earth.
Brayker finds himself running from The Collector and ends up stuck in an old church re-imaged into a motel. Brayker has the key, which is also a container that holds the blood of past owner’s first involving Jesus Christ, and is able to protect people from the demons entering rooms by pouring some of the blood onto an entry way. As time progress characters become on edge as tension and anger swells on the inside, leaving multiple opportunities for the demons to enter.
I felt the story was a breath of fresh air and still is to this day. It takes some biblical aspects and takes its own path, which I really enjoyed. There are also side stories dealing with the rest of the cast which plays a role later on after the demons attack. It’s due to these side stories that lead to demons getting closer to the key and gives us a nice twist in the story where The Collector is actually able to tempt people into joining him unknowingly that if they do they become possessed demons themselves.
I tip my hat off to Billy Zane. He gives an amazing performance in this movie. What I love so much about his character is that even though he’s a bad guy; he can make you hate him in one instance then make you really love him in another. He was smart and comedic, evil and intense. I won’t take anything away from the rest of the cast as they were excellent as well. They were able to bring all kinds of different elements into the film but Zane's performance is held high.
The action in the movie takes off before you even realize it and it only lets up to progress the story. There are some incredible gore sequences but they don’t over do it. They are able to use it when necessary and they don’t let you down. It's bloody, gory, and damn fun.
THE DOCTOR’S DIAGNOSIS IS:
It really is a great movie that should be seen at least once by everyone. It’s a fun ride through the whole thing and although the movie only lasts for about an hour and a half you don’t feel the movie is rushed instead it actually has good pacing.
It’s doctor’s orders that you see this movie if you haven’t already. I will give this movie my seal of approval:
