Over the past probably 8 years, i've been slowly collecting and reading his books. I love his writing. My only complaint is how deep he goes into detail sometimes. I just finished Four Past Midnight and loved it. I love The Langoliers and Library Policeman. Anyone else like his stuff? Love, hate, whatever, complaints, anything?

He does veer off the main storyline a bit when he goes into detail about things that don't really matter. Otherwise he's a great author.

That's why I prefer his short stuff and his bachman books, especially the long walk and the Running Man. To me the bachman books that I have read have his style but are stripped down.

I've only got two of his books: Dreamcatcher and Hearts In Atlantis. I though both books were good and perfer them over their movie versions. I'd really like to read some of his earlier stuff.

His earlier stuff (as King) was pretty much to the point. Carrie, Firestarter, Misery, The Shining.
I think after he wrote IT, he started overwriting.
Very big fan.. My favourite book is IT.

Yeah Running man and Thinner were awesome books!
I read a lot of his older stuff Cujo, Christine, Firestarter, and a ton of the short stories.
I really liked a lot of them.

I've read at least a dozen of his books. Dreamcatcher and Salem's Lot were my favorites. The reast were :sleep2:
I still say Richard Matheson blows him away.
Tobe Hooper did a great job directing 1979's made for TV adaptation of Salem's Lot.

I think King's earlier works like The Shining, Salem's Lot, and Carrie were far superior than many of his later books, with the exception of a few such as Misery, and The Talisman with Perer Straub. I like his short stories better, because they don't have the overfluff of some of his novels--a great novella is Rita Hayward and the Shawshank Redemption.
my 2 cents

I agree his earlier works is the best.
I started reading his book IT and found that it had way to much pointless details, I mean I was almost through half of the book and not to much had happened yet. But than again he is a really good writer, his stories are awesome.

Honestly with King its a toss up sometimes. I've read alot of his work and sometimes the "over writing", as some have put, actually works well. For instance Salems' Lot and IT were amazing novels because of the way he went into detail about the town's of Derry and Jerusalems Lot as well as the characters. I will never forget those places or people and it made me care about the characters and enhance the story as a whole.
However some books of his I have never been able to get through because they seem too long winded. Bag of Bones for instance I had alot of trouble getting through and put it down numerous times. (However after getting getting 3/4 of the way through it picked up and I ended up really enjoying it.) The Dark Tower books are another example of this - I just cant get hooked on them and end up skimming through till something interesting happens. Insomnia didnt hold my attention for long either even though he took place in Derry.
Then on the flip side of the coin again CELL came out and I read it in one sitting. I'm more confortable with his short storie anthologies because they dont have to delve into the detail he puts in his full fledge novels.
Overall though as a writer he is one of the best and damn if he cant tell a story!

My dad has every piece of literature he has ever written and is in the book club. Has a book shelf full of first editions and everything. I should pick up one of them one day.

I wouldn't be able to see that. I would be :drooling: all over the place.
I love Stephen King, would have to admit his earlier stuff I really enjoyed. I have a few of his newer books that I honestly haven't even read yet. Duma Key, Under the Dome, Lisey's Story. Have them all, just haven't gotten in the right 'mood' to read them. Right now I'm trying to find Cujo, Salem's Lot, Pet Semetary and Carrie on ebay. All books I've had but some years back I lost a very huge book collection so I'm still replacing.
Yes I revived a very OLD thread... sorry!! -grins-

I'm on the fence about Stephen King. I did enjoy some of his work, my favorite is The Stand. But he does tend to go off on details a little too much which causes me to lose focus and stop reading. He can stretch out a book that should only be 300 pages to a 600 page book.

My roomie just finished Full Dark and liked it a lot. Haven't bothered with some of his titles. Duma Key, Lisey's Story mainly. I like his old(er) school horror.

That's another one I just got and haven't read yet, Full Dark, No Stars. It sounds pretty good. I actually just got The Black House from ebay yesterday.. I have The Talisman, those are two of my faves along with most of his older stuff. I'm not sure how the newer stuff is but the majority of his older books.. Thinner, IT, Insomnia Eyes of the Dragon.. and a few others, I actually read in one sitting.

It was a good book but I thought the ending was weak and lacked a lot. Not read any of his recent books, but my favourites are SALEM'S LOT, IT, THE STAND and PET SEMATARY.Short story wise, THE MIST is just fucking awesome.
