FRIGHT NIGHT (1985)

Starring: Chris Sarandon, William Ragsdale, Amanda Bearse, Stephen Geoffreys, Roddy McDowall.

Written and Directed by: Tom Holland

Ahhh...Fright Night! This is another '80s horror favorite of mine I never get tired of watching. I think I've seen this when I was really little, but I could only remember the part where I was freaked out by the melting zombie guy and it scared me a bit, and that right there is what gives the horror genre its light. And better yet, I believe this was the first film that really got me liking a very familiar horror icon to all horror fans out there...Stephen Geoffreys! Well, anyways, I'd figured after typing some stuff today I'd give you all a review of how much this movie became such a favorite to me.

We begin with our main character, Charlie Brewster, who's with his girlfriend, Amy, in his bedroom making out while watching a horror-movie-marathon program on TV I'd like to call "Fright Night", with its delectable host, Peter Vincent! The Great Vampire Killer! Ahem, anyways, Charlie can't get with his girl at first and then looks out his window to see people moving into a house nextdoor to his carrying in a coffin. Charlie then thinks it's nothing, until he starts seeing attractive girls go into the house, but never coming back out alive. One night later, Charlie looks out his window and sees a man, Jerry, gently tending to an attractive gal and Charlie sees that Jerry has fangs, which in this case makes Jerry a vampire!

Charlie gets freaked out and calls the cops, but they don't believe him after visiting the house and finding no trace of "vampire-ism" around, and then Jerry visits Charlie to try and kill him, but fails from a sudden "cramp" in his left hand, and threatens he'll get Charlie the next night. Charlie then thinks of recruiting Peter Vincent to help stop Jerry, but of course the great horror host thinks he's a wacko. Charlie's girlfriend Amy and his other freaky-but-awesome friend Evil Ed (played by the awesome Stephen Geoffreys! "HAHAHA! You're so cool, Brewster! HAHAHA!!") try to help Charlie, but in the end become more involved in danger when Jerry catches up and now Peter Vincent finally convinces himself and joins forces with Charlie to face off Jerry and his rein for blood.

I've really gotta say this was a very entertaining vampire movie, with great makeup and special effects that made it convincing and very scary! And yes, there are some places where the effects are a bit far-fetched, but in a good way of however you can prevail it in this time. It has a great gore moment with Jerry's zombie helper and the acting was perfect, the lines were nice, the dialouge was good too, and so was Stephen Geoffreys. There were just brief moments in the film with humor I enjoyed, but not that'll fill in the time slot which is a very good tactic for all horror movies. The story is very promising, no matter what, this IS one of the greatest vampire films I've ever seen. I still don't know why this wasen't in the 100 Scariest Movie Moments show on Bravo...it could beat the hell out of JAWS.

OVERALL

One of the greatest vampire movies ever made. Great story, great effects, and come on...you can never beat Stephen Geoffrey's laugh! This movie has it all, and a great little film to watch around Halloween, once you watch and see what other monsters are in it you'll know what I mean. It'll be worth every rent just as it is worth every penny.

"Fright Night"...This movie does a great job on the whole vampire storyline/theory with the shapeshifting into bats and wolves. Plus the different ways to harm/kill vampires. I think of this movie a mix of Salem's Lot and the early Dracula. The cast was hit and miss as is the characters. I couldn't stand the "Evil Ed" character. The bugger got on my nerves big time. However the actor did a fine job playing the character the way the character was written. The same goes for Roddy McDowell and his character "Peter". The character grated my nerves a bit here and there, but towards the end came into his own. Amanda Bearse was pretty good as "Amy"...I liked the character and performance...especially the climax. William Ragsdale as "Charley" was also hit and miss for me. Very weak/poor in some scenes and wonderful in others. Last but not least, the suave and handsome Chris Sarandon. He is great in here and totally owns this movie. I adore him!! Some nice special effects, terrific blood and gore, campy fun,and thrills and chills. A solid horror flick!!

Yup. One of my favorites from the 80s. I've got it in my dvd rack.
Marcy D'Arcy was cute as Amy and, dare I say, even a bit sexy in that white dress.
