Comes out this week, and I definitely picking it up. I'm just not sure if I should get it for my PS3 or PC just yet. I know it'll look better on my PC, but I like using the controller and playing on the big screen :shrugs:

Anyone else gettin' it, if so, what platform?

Game is getting really good ratings, got an 8.8 on IGN:

Call it science fiction survival horror, but Dead Space does the genre proud with an engaging story; action that's tense, fast-paced and extremely violent; as well as atmospheric qualities that will get under your skin and make you jump. It may be a newcomer, but the seeds of an incredible franchise have been sown, and EA's in a great position to reap a phenomenal franchise full of scares. If you like survival horror, action or sci-fi, Dead Space needs to be on your radar.

I have it preordered will pick it up tomorrow.

I hate to burst your bubble, and I'm not posting a source or link, but I'm about 99% positive that I read from and interview with Cliffy B that GoW2 will NOT be coming out for the PC.

Picking up Dead Space tomorrow, even though I'm not quite finished with SH: Homecoming. Then next week is Far Cry 2, then Fallout 3, then GoW2. Man, it's gonna be a great few months for video games.

i picked it up yesterday for the PS3. I have yet to play it but i am eagerly waiting to. It looks really good and i have heard nothing but good things about it. Im also sort of curious about the movie/anime thing thats coming out the end of the month thats gives a backstory to the game. Its a prequel i think....seems interesting. Im really glad that its getting good reviews cause when i first came across the game a while back i was interested in it and i hoped it was going to be cool....i mean survival horror games are usually fun. but i was hoping it wasnt going to be like some of these games that get hyped and then wind up not delivering their potential.

Got it today. Played a few chapters on easy so I can get a feel for button config and try out the weapon/suit upgrade system before I take a serious stab at normal/hard.

I love the engineering equipment-turned-weapon way they went with weapons. Upgrading system is neat, but not forgiving. Know what you want before you commit to something (not a complaint mind you, I like it). The schematics you have to find in the ship to attain new weapons and suit upgrades really makes you keep and eye on your surroundings, which can at times lead you into a nice baddie trap.

Lighting and sound really bring the creepy atmosphere home. The soft touches, like no sound in the decompressed areas and the how some lights are so bright it makes other areas around them appear darker do great to work the player over.

Enemy AI is impressive. Crawling into a wall and popping out behind the player, their movements in zero-G areas, all very well done.

I can only assume limb removal is more key in normal/hard difficulties, where ammo would be more sparse. In easy, ammo/health is everywhere so its not a hazard to just empty a clip into a baddie rather than do a bit of strat and aim for the limbs. But, its easy mode... what do you expect?

Kenetics and Statis (sp?) offer some interesting alternatives in combat. Quite a few items around the ship go bang when hit hard, allowing kenetics to be rather useful in removing baddies when low on ammo. Statis is just freaking neat, putting something into slow-motion for a period of time has so many fun and useful applications. Trick is remembering you have these two abilities and not get stuck in a 'trigger happy' mindset... like I have too many times.

Haven't run through the whole game nor tried the normal/hard difficulties, but what I have seen... its a dark, creepy, gory, wrecked shipload of fun.

Playing on hard makes it practically necessary, A couple times I ended up having to get up close and personal with some of those things and just beat the shit out of em' cus i ran out of ammo. my favorite memory is fighting two, one of them being the ones with the two arms kind of like scythes, pretty much the common 1st mission enemy, and the one that crawls on it's arms and has a scorpion tail. I remember killing the first one and then pumping a few rounds into the crawler then running out of ammo, I waited for it to charge me and just before it stabbed me with it's tail I curb stomped it's head in..oh it was epic, and pretty rough, this game makes sure you never feel very comfortable in the surroundings.

By far my favorite thing is extremely subtle but makes the game all the more scary and that's the ambient sound they added. If you just stay in a room you cleared your bound to hear scampering, pipes rattling, something falling over, screams, growls, the list goes on. The do a great job of making it hard to determine if it's the ambience or if there's actually something there.

If you like horror gaming, I can't encourage you strongly enough to go out and get this game, it's great. I also highly, highly encourage you to play it with a 5.1 sound system, the sound design is incredibly immersive.

More time in... got a real complaint now: the map. With some areas overlapping each other, positioning the map camera to see where stuff is can be a daunting task and in some cases down right nerve racking.

Boss fights are fun and challenging. Also, I suck at shooting asteroids. (if you have been to that point in the game, you'll understand.)

I use the tumble and zoom functions. Even with them, some of the maps are awkward to move around enough to see your position and nearby areas with some of the over-lapping rooms and or how the map is centered compared to the area you are currently is moving through. Good example, one of the recent maps I went through centered far away from most of the level when you zoom all the way out because a small portion of the level was at the end of a long tunnel. That default center made zoom/tumble while in the majority of the level alot more annoying than it could have been.

I don't know if it's still free or not, but I d/led the "Elite 360 Suit" from the DLC. It's got all inventory slots and it cost nothing to buy at the store.

I think I'm on Chapter 10 or 11. Game is great. I read that OXM gave it a 6.5, but it was the same girl that overrated Too Human and underrated SH: Homecoming with the same score. Obviously, she likes this number too much, and she doesn't know WTF she's talking about. This is an era where game devs are cutting corners to lower costs and it is very apparent in glitches and such. However, this game is tight, and you can tell they put a lot of time into it. It deserves a lot higher than a 6.5.

slimeisacharacter
10-28-2008, 12:42 AM
Downloaded the PS3 exclusive suit after I beat the game. The coloring of the suit fits so well in the game. Course, beating the game unlocks the teir 6 military suit... so I upgraded soon after, but I still prefer the exclusive's color scheme over any of the other suits.

Currently working on the trophy list. Some are so easy, like spend so much money at the store, get all the weapons. Some are impressively hard, like beat the game only using the plasma cutter, beat zero-g basketball, and get a perfect score in the shooting range. The second/third time through the game with a weapon or two completely upgraded is so sexy. Maxed out stasis doesnt hurt either.

Tomarrow... Fallout 3 arrives in my collection. Getting hard to pick which of my recent buys to play lately. Really interested to see how well they pulled off the free-roam world in Fallout 3.

The 360 suit looks pretty cool as well, but that Tier 6 military suit is bad ass.

I'm playing it through again trying to deck out all my weapons and such. I'm gonna do that "beat the game with plasma cutter" achievement last probably. That might be kind of difficult to do, though once it's upgraded that little bastard rocks.

Beating it on hard might not be as bad as I thought originally, bosses aren't too bad and the enemies go done quite easily when you dismember them.

slimeisacharacter
10-30-2008, 08:55 PM
The plasma cutter trophy is not that bad really. Besides are few standard spawns, the levels only generate ammo for weapons your currently have equipped. Dump everything except the cutter in the safe and work with a fully upgraded cutter. Between the cutter-only ammo generation, the maxed fire power, and the occassional creative use of ken/stat you should clear the game just fine.

Finally beat the game -- freakin' sweet! One of the best third-person survival horror games I've ever played, and ranks as probably the scariest of them all. Great atmosphere, easy controls, fun gameplay. The baddies were tough at times, but not as difficult as some made it seem. Never really died much aside from when machines or something like that would waste me.

Fav. weapons are the Pulse Rifle and Force Gun, especially when you max out the upgrades for'em :rockin:

Probably gonna try to replay this on hard since you get to keep all your gear and items and see how far I make it. I normally don't replay games, especially in hard settings, but I enjoyed this one so much that I'm gonna try it out :thumbup3:

Game was great, which kind of sucks because I think RE5 could've taken a page out of Dead Spaces book when it comes to smooth gameplay and controls.

I beat it on impossible, and it was harder than I thought it would be, mostly because the enemies take a lot more shots to dismember and ammo is scarce as a result. But if you want it to be scarier, and have a greater sense of survival and suspense, play it on impossible (which is unlocked after you beat the game on any setting). It's much more suspenseful when you have to make just about EVERY shot count.

Actually there is plenty reason to pre-order a game. Many games came out over the past 5 years that were impossible to get for weeks and\or months if you didn't pre-order. $5 that ends up going towards the price of the game to ensure I get one is worth it to me.

I agree. I pre-ordered RE5 weeks ago and through time have put more money on it which is a bonus. As of now i'll be getting it for half the price.Oh yeah Dead Space!! :metalbang:

Just thought this was interesting..apparently Dead Space was originally being developed for the Xbox, here's some video of it back when it was still an Xbox title.

it's on the regular Xbox...not the 360. Looks pretty damn impressive to me on that system.
