Joaquin Phoenix, who was nominated for a best actor Oscar for his starring role as Johnny Cash in the biopic Walk the Line, has announced that he is putting his life as an actor behind him. Interviewed by the syndicated Extra at a benefit for the Association of Hole in the Wall Camps founded by Paul Newman, Phoenix, who has just completed filming the drama Two Lovers, said, "I want to take this opportunity ... to give you the exclusive ... that this will be my last performance as an actor. ... I'm not doing films anymore." Phoenix said that he intends to focus on building his career as a singer. "I'm done" with making movies, he said, "I've been through that." Although he was also nominated for an Oscar for best supporting actor for Gladiator, Phoenix has experienced an up-and-down career as an actor. His last film, Focus Features' Reservation Road, received mostly negative reviews and earned a scant $121,994 during a three-week release on 14 screens. (Walk the Line, by contrast, earned an imposing $119 million.)

Shame. He's a good actor and he's done some really good films but I think his talent still has a great amount of juice left in it.

I don't buy it. A lot of people say they're done and then come back. If he doesn't though, it sucks because he's a talent. 8mm, The Village, Walk the Line, Quills, all good flicks.

When I saw this thread, I thought Oh great another actor who wants to be a singer and sure enough...

When his records flop, he'll go back to acting.

Enjoyed the movie Walk The Line. Him and Reese had some good chemistry and they get extra chops for actually singing.

Outside of that, makes no difference to me what he does. Make no mistake if the wallet starts getting lighter. He'll go back.

Good luck, chief. Might not want to delete those directors from your speed-dial, though...

The musician thing rarely pans out for actors, unless you're Zooey Deschanel or Scarlett Johansson... but I'm interested in hearing something from him, even if I'm not expecting much. Although, if his music is anywhere near as good as his performances... it should be good.

Joaquin Phoenix is now officially a rapper.http://www.people.com/people/article/0,,20253488,00.html?xid=rss-topheadlines

Bad move. Notice a rapper can become an actor but not the other way around. Most actor turned musician acts stink. Example:

That was the most uncomfortable interview since Adam Corrola interviewed Steve O.

I'm going to be really interested in seeing this "documentary" that Affleck is creating. They're clearly trying to prove a point about something, but I don't know exactly what it is.

Fake, but probably not too far from what his rap album will sound like.

That interview was awkward as all hell. If in fact it was real and staged in any way I would've punched Letterman in the chops if I were Joaquin. Good call sticking the gum under his desk hahaha.

I was speechless when I saw his performance in Vegas. I mean, he looked like a bum in Abercrombie throwing up lines (instead of spitting rhymes.) I am sure this "documentary" will be his next acting role, and when the rap carreer crumbles, he'll pull a gotcha. Man I hate Hollyweirdos.

Now THIS shit is funny. How he could think this is a plausible career choice for himself is beyond me.

The was, and will ever be, only one Andy Kaufman.

Joaquin, I mean Leaf, I mean Joaquin needs to leave the "life as performance art" schtick alone...

Lettermen had every right to call out Joaquin and make a joke out of him.
All the celebs that want to show the U.S a statement go to Lettermen's show on drugs for example Farrah Fawcett. I dont know why celebs do it but it sure makes really good TV.

Joaquin Phoenix in a fistfight with a heckler. doesn't bode well for his rap career.

This guy loves douching it up, he should tone it down a bit. As much as I love a good train wreck, he is actually a really decent actor and I'm starting to wonder if he has a drug problem or mental health issues.

At first I thought this was real, but then a I read a good point; If Casey Affleck is his friend, he's got to be the biggest piece of shit ever for continuing to record all this for a documentary, rather than helping the man out.
