Is Childs Play a horror film or a comedy?

When I was a little kid I thought childs play 1,2 & 3 were the scariest movies a human could make. But when I watch these movies as an adult, I find these movies funny at best. Is there any really fear in these movies or is it just a clever 80s film?

I think they tried to make it scary with the first 2, then turned to comedy once the fear factor was gone. It happens to all killers who talk. Look what happened to Freddy.

The first was straight-up horror, while the second and third were still horror, but had some small comedy elements thrown in for fun. The rest are just horror-comedies, especially the last two.

The 3rd one was the start of the comedy franchise I can totally see what cmurder is saying. Why was there a random carnival in the middle of the forest? Why was a doll now trying to attack Andy adult? Those 2 points always bugged me.

Can't answer for the carnival in the woods but he was chasing adult Andy because if they continue the story from the first Chucky has to transfer his soul to the first person he revealed his true identity to.

I personally love the first 3. They are childhood favs. Bride was descent and Seed was just terrible.

The 3rd is heavily underrated and better than the 2nd IMO. The military setting, the score, Chucky vs Andy for the last time, etc.

Bride was a horror comedy more or less. Once you turn around and put another doll aside Chucky, it starts losing a little bit of luster IMO. Still even with that, I found Bride highly entertaining compared to Seed which was strangely god awful.

It took everything that was somewhat fresh and new with Bride and went overboard with it.

I used to be obsessed with the series, I'll still tune into them if I ever see it on cable... but sadly, they don't hold up that well. I'll still consider them guilty pleasures, except Seed... because fuuuuck that movie.

I just watched part 1 last night, held up better than I remembered. The overall movie was really creepy and when you start to get a good look at chucky it is freaky as hell, especially the end when he's all burnt up. Awesome.

Maybe i'll watch 2 later today...from what I remember (and it's been a good 10 years since I've seen 2 or 3) 2 and 3 had some pretty interesting kills, which was my fav part of the movies back then. Bride was ok, but just a 90 min goof of a horror movie. I've never seen Seed but i suspect it sucks, i'll check it out eventually since its in my set.

well the first and scary were pretty scary as a kid the their one was funny. the only funny thing that was funny from the first two was when Chucky was on the kids back and Chucky legs were swinging, hahaha.

I watched 2 and 3 last night and 3 did not hold up very well. I actually liked 2 better than 3 mostly because chucky was pretty effing menacing in that doll factory.

I think I'll watch bride and seed tonight but so far, all were attempts at horror, just a lot of 1 liners in part 3...makes chucky sound like Freddy in the later nightmares

I found the first one very creepy, and I watched that last year for the first time. The second one still had a creepy atmosphere and kept me interested. I walked in halfway through part 3 yesterday and found it to be more comedic than anything. It was ok from what I saw, but it wouldn't scare even a child, much less anyone else.

CP1: Awesome
CP2: Creepy but lacking the scare of the original
CP3: too many 1 liners not enough great kills
Bride: nice homage to the childs play series, funniest of all
Seed: terrible, terrible garbage...i wish i never watched
