Steven Spielberg and Will Smith are considering working together to remake the Korean classic, Oldboy.
The original story concerns a businessman who is kidnapped and incarcerated for 15 years without explanation. He is then released, and spends the rest of the film searching for his captor and trying to find out why.
The original isn't exactly the type of mainstream film that Spielberg and Smith are usually involved with. Spielberg, however, is already looking for a writer for the project.

First off, I know K.I.N.G. is gonna have a heartattack now.
Second, we've had enough Asian Butchering. Still though...It's the almighty Spielberg. And Even though I'm not Will Smith's biggest fan, he is a good actor. I'm just not sure on this.

I definitely won't be seeing this. I want nothing to do with this. Spielberg will most likely F it up and he's bringing truth to that already by wanting Will Smith.

I gotta go with Miller on that one. He wrote the two best Batman stories back to back, the beginning and end of Batman. Moore is great, too, and "Watchmen" rocks my balls to the core, but being a big Batfan, Miller wins it.

Miller also has the best run on Daredevil ever.

True that. People always like to criticize Miller these days for his bad writing for "ASBAR:TBW", but that's the same thing as saying Willy Mays was a terrible player in his final years. People just seem to lose their touch later in their careers. Just because Miller has done some bad stories as of recently, that doesn't take away that he was the comic writer in the 1980's.

I actually dig his new work, atleast he didn't fall off like Chris Claremont.

Oldboy is one of my all-time favorites, strangely... this doesn't affect me at all. I'm actually kind of interested, it won't touch the original but I'm interested.

Ah... Son of a bitch.... WHY? First him and Lucas rape Indiana Jones and now this?
The sad thing is not only they are going to give this a shot but no way they will come close to the violence, Spilberg will clean it up for a hard PG-13. Excuse me, im a little drunk and heard about this earlier while my wife was watching E! I almost dropped my Crown on the rocks! This is BULLSHIT.

I just watched this film over the summer for the first time. It was excellent.
Agreed.. nothing will touch the original but I would check this out. Hope they keep it brutal and the R rating. Wouldn't mind to see Will Smith take on this story line.

Spielberg isn't afraid of violence, he has plenty of very violent films under his belt. Granted, Will Smith doesn't make too many R rated films, but the pair together will bring in a lot of dough no matter what the film is rated. Sure, I'm being optimistic and this is completely unnecessary... but I wouldn't write if off yet.
Spielberg has a knack for making exciting movies.

I don't think I could take Will Smith seriously in a movie plot that involves incest. He can do a lot of things, but I don't see him in this role convincingly.

What the fuck are you talking about? They created Indy. Go make your own movie.
I don't get all this Oldboy fanfare - it was another weirdo from Asia. And "the twist" was seen from the beginning. You guys like anything "exotic" and incestuous?

People always like to criticize Miller these days for his bad writing for "ASBAR:TBW", but that's the same thing as saying Willy Mays was a terrible player in his final years. That's because ASSBARF totally sucked, and I'm not bullshittinging you on this either.
Moore gets equal criticism for being an egomaniac. Bendis needs to never touch a pen, pencil, typewriter, or computer ever again. Ever. Once a year he gets to sign his tax return under strict supervision, and that's all.
Ugh. Okay. Machine gun style.
I Am Legend was awful. It was mediocre for a long while, then the end ruined it.
Indiana Jones 4 was just as much in the Edgar Rice Burroughs vein as the first three. Probably more. Unfortunately, most people don't really get into Edgar Rice Burroughs and old pulp. I thoroughly enjoyed the Crystal Skulls.
Finally to get to the point.
I have never seen the original Oldboy. I am currently trying to get through the remake of One Missed Call, however, and can remember why PG-13 movies typically suck. I'm pretty sure a PG-13 Oldboy with Will Smith in the lead will be a commercial success but an overall lousy movie.

**spoilers**
You seen from the beginning that in high school Oh Dae Su slipped his tongue and made a girl think she was pregnant from her brother, forcing her to commit suicide sending her brother on a vengeful rampage to lock him in a room for 15 years only to let him out before being hypnotized to fall in love and fuck his own daughter that he secretly raised from birth? You sir, are an idiot :smokin2:

Even though there are ongoing legal issues, Steven Spielberg and Will Smith are looking to move forward with their remake of Chan-wook Park's Old Boy. Spielberg and Smith are working on an American remake of the property, which will be easier for mainstream America to "consume".
While Spielberg and Smith are moving forward with the remake, the franchise is engulfed in a legal mess. Reuters is reporting that Show East has shut down, that its CEO, Kim Dong-Ju, has disappeared, and that Big Egg (a co-producer of the film) has also ceased operation.
The Japanese Publisher of the Old Boy manga, Futabasha, is suing Korean production company Show East, who made the original Old Boy film, over the right to remake the story. A spokesperson from Futabasha in Tokyo made the following comment on Show East's current status…
"We haven't been able to confirm that Show East is bankrupt, and at this stage we're not sure what effect this will have on the legal case."

F**K Will Smith, he has ruined every movie that was adapted from a book or remakes that he has been in thus far:
1. I, Robot
2. I Am Legend
3. Wild Wild West
