I thought this horror flick deserved another review as it has just been released on Blu-ray, 4 years since it original release.
You know Michael Cain once said, to paraphrase, 'why do they always bloody remake good films, they should remake the make bad ones'. Of course I agree with this, but Michael went on to star in the remake of Get Carter and Sleuth. So to follow in Michael's foot steps and do a u turn, I'd like to state the re-imagining/remake of Dawn of the dead is a blast.

Although I love George's original Dawn of the dead, with his traditional slow moving dead, the zombies in this remake Directed by Zack Snyder (who went on to direct 300 & Watchmen) move fast. The fast moving crazies as in this film and in 28 days/weeks later are just plain menacing.

Zack Snyder directs a solid cast of relatively unknowns, Sarah Polley, Ving Rhames and Jake Weber. The body of the story is the same as the original only this time a nurse, a policeman, a young married couple, a salesman, and other survivors arrive at a shopping mall for protection from the hordes of zombies that await outside.

The effects are excellent and the first 15 minutes of the film is crafted and executed to a standard that I'm sure Hitchcock would have been proud of - it's pure tension, scares and horror.

In retrospect Dawn of the dead 2004 is probably the most underrated re-imagining/remake ever. Grab a raw steak and watch it if you don't believe me. :bye:

I'm not a fan of this movie at all.
There really was no reason to leave the mall,it made no sense to me why they wanted to,at least in the original they had a reason.
And they were in a mall, and they couldnt figure out a better way to gut the gun shop owner food and water,I know if I were to go to my local mall I could think of a bunch of safer ways to get him supplies.

As for the Zombies.
I like the idea of something moving slow, but never resting, always advancing and never giving up,and giving the victim the illusion that they can just run around them, get away and everthing will be fine......thats much more menecing to me.
So I'll take Romero's formula over a bunch of Super Zombies.

Lots of holes in this remakes plot. I prefer Romero's zombies as well. Scarier IMO.

I don't even have to watch this to know I'd hate it.

By the way, this thing isn't underrated, I've spoken to many who actually believe this is better than the original.

I didnt think it was a horrible remake, but its not really worthy watching it over and over unlike the original which I have to watch at least every few months. In fact the only thing I really remember from the remake was the zombie baby being born. The FX in the original were alot more realistic as well (lifting up the zombie chicks' head as the gun fires, blowing half her face and seeing that skin flap..love it).

This is the only "memorable" part to this movie. They should have just called it something else, and instead of zombies, blamed their state on a biological virus. It would have been a lot better. This movie really pissed me of.

and i hate that they cut out the scene of the family driving and the little girl becomes a zombie and attacks the family...hence the car crashing into the gas station in the beginning

i loved that scene...made me laugh every time

i do own the remake though :dsp:

I really dug this movie. Love the original but this was a great movie. Yeah the zombies running may not make a lot of sense, since you know they were decaying and everything. And I wish someone in the movie would have bothered to say "how the hell can these things run so fast?" but still I can forgive that because they were menacing as hell. I would be a hell of a lot more afraid of a zombie that can chase my ass down than one it would take 30 minutes just walk across the parking lot to get to me.

These zombies were scary as hell. And the video game Left 4 Dead was made that much more fun just because the zombies can run. And I have to say, I sit and laugh when people go on about like "thats not a zombie, zombies don't do that" Zombie comes from voodoo, originally had nothing to do with decaying and flesh eating (so technically zombies don't do that either). I just looked at the new Dawn zombies as ghouls from the old school comics. Theres no reasin, they just are. and they are awesome.
