Hey everyone----

I have a major, shall we say, issue, with my Gateway Solo notebook---I am getting the dark blue error screen of death when it going into the Windows XP OS---right after it says welcome, and you hear the welcome bell---how do I get this thing in Safe Mode to do a System Restore. Or how can I install a fresh OS---and just clear the old one

Any help would be fuckin awesome!!!

Thanx:tiphat:

You can usually press f8 to get to the windows choices screen to select safe mode whenever you first turn on the laptop. If you can boot into safe mode then I would say that is your best bet. Do you have any discs that came with the laptop still? You can install a new os by doing a format and reload..or if you have the windows disc that came with it you can try a repair(which rarely works). Usually with the BSOD if I can not resolve the issue from safe mode then I due a Format and Reload. Hope this helps.

Hello SpookyJ, you are very welcome I try to help as much as I can. For a format and reload you have to change the boot order of your devices for the bios to boot from the cd/dvd drive first. When you first start your laptop you should see another option like press del to enter setup to enter your bios and be able to see an option like boot order or device settings you need to go in those settings and set it to boot from your cd drive with the windows xp disc in the drive....you will then see a message(restart your computer after you apply settings) that says press any key to start from the cd. You will then boot into the Windows XP setup. It will recognize the partition already having Windows XP on it...It will ask you if you want to format this partition and install Windows XP on it and then it will go through setup and start copying the files off the disc. Then after this you should be good to go. However if you can boot in to Safe Mode, I would run a virus scan to see if you have any viruses and also download this program called Spybot search and destroy. This is a program for spyware and it works really well and it is free to download. Any spyware or viruses found need to be removed and I would then try to restart normally and still see if you get the BSOD. If you do end up needing help with the Format and Reload you can add me on aim...my id is nightmareinarmor. I would be glad to walk you through the process as I have done this many times and my career is in IT. Thanks and let me know.

Hey Mudvayne_Eternal, I do appreciate it---right now, it is working again, I would eventually like to do a complete fresh install---because it is still quite a bit slow (used that Spybot-S&D you mentioned and it helped quite a bit, BTW---I also used Spyware Doctor) I got a virus on there a while back from Antivirus 2009(thanks to my nephew;), and there are still remnants of it on my pc, that I have been unable to remove, even with Spyware Doctor. So, I may be taking you up on that help in the near future, if that would be cool (probably after the holidays). Thanks again, my friend.
