Was talking with FrighT the other night about The Strangers. He mentioned that a friend said that the characters (no i don't recall their names) should have fought back more.
I remember thinking the same thing at the time. Here they are trapped in a house and they really didn't put up much of a fight for their lives.
One thing FrighT and I agreed on was that once they shot their friend perhaps they lost the will to fight.
First half of the movie was solid and had some good old-fashioned suspense and horror. I felt the middle could have benefited from a bit more of a struggle against The Strangers.
Overall still one of the better horror flicks to hit the mainstream in awhile.
Thoughts?

I thought the characters were dull and boring and made you not feel any compassion for them. Liked that it had a little of an old school feel to it but overall I was very disappointed with it

Should have been called Super Strangers, they can sneak in and out of the house without any detection, had no fear of shells and could even take what appeared to be a direct hit.
Also the home owners had the upper hand, they had the gun and knew their surroundings, they should have had no trouble defending their selves.

They weren't the "homeowners" and they didn't really know their surroundings. I think it was the parent's house of the guy and he hadn't visited in a while. :shrugs:

The Strangers was a good movie in a while i think it needs two sequals and thats it.One for the killing and two to unmask them.If they do take their masks off who do you think it would be?
Watch that movie alone with no one in the house it would scare the crap out of you:shakes:

It creeped me out because our property is set up very similar. Old farm house in the middle of nowhere with a barn out back. I keep a shotgun in my house like they had but I wouldn't be so afraid to use it. I couldn't imagine what thatd actually be like to go through but I do think I could defend myself better especially with some artillery.
I really liked that it seemed they killed them for no real reason either. The more sadistic the better.

I personally loved the flick. As for the whole "putting up a fight" scenario, I differ but only because of my mindset.
Most people would want the characters of a film to put up a fight, but the more realistic a movie is for me the more impactful. Hence, when people are too frightened or scared to think straight, which is highly plausible in real life, the better.

I completely agree that the more realitic the more impactful. That's the power of the concept of this film, that it could theoretically happen tonight at your house.
Realistically for me, I don't think I would have gone down without more of a fight.

I agree 100% with you there. Scared me. Glad I saw it in a threatre. This one brought back the fun in going to the movies, at least for me it did. I jumped out of my seat at least 3 times. Story was believable and the strangers were creepy.
Loved it.

Wow, i am truly amazed that anyone enjoyed this movie. I honestly wanted the couple to die so i could get the movie over with. They pretty much put themselves on a platter and sat and waited to be murdered.. And what was with the end when the girl is lying dead on the ground and the kids come to look and she jumps up and scares the shit out of them?!

Best horror movie to come out in theaters this year. Caught it at the 12 midnight viewing and was scared shitless.

Not really, i thought this was one of the worst flicks in a while, the story is there even though chessy and played out was there but everything else felt short, the only thing that made jump a little bit in the entire movie was the last scene.

I and many others looked forward to this movie so much that I think I went in with such high hopes that it just fell flat for me..I enjoyed the use of the environment in the movie but I was really let down in the end..pity could have been a good one.

My thoughts exactly. I was utterly disappointed in this movie.

Bought this on DVD and have watched it several times with friends who didn't see it in theaters. I love seeing how they'll react. So far only one of my friends hasn't liked it, everyone else thought it was scary or as one of my guys put it "unnerving."

I really liked it. Heard alot of good things about and was not disappointed. They could have done a better job of defending themselves i guess but when your in that situation i bet its entirely different from sitting on your couch knowing all the facts.

No doubt about it, but there were still plenty of instances when I thought, "The only reason these characters are total dumbasses is because the plot couldn't move forward properly without that."

Pretty amusing how horror fans gripe about The Strangers being illogical and the characters being stupid.

That's the think that sux about a movie like this...it doesn't hold up after a few more viewings..even though the 1st time was really cool.

It wasn't promoted as camp, it was promoted as "Based on true events" (dun dun dun!). So yeah, I expected a little more.

What does the movie using a gimmick and camp have to do with anything? The horror genre has never been known to have such things as "logic" or "common sense", both in campy and serious flicks alike.
Yes, The Strangers did have characters making dumb decisions in it but it is certainly not the worst offender and doesn't change the fact that it was one of the better US horror movies to come out in awhile.

If you read the original post, I said exactly that.
Point of the topic was to have a little discussion beyond "Movie sucked" or "Movie ruled".
