What do you think are some of the most underrated horror movies?

Id have two that come to my mind right now:

Dead Silence. Im sure A LOT of people will disagree with me on this one. But I think it gave a breath of fresh air to the classic ghost story sub-genre. Sure, it was predictable and the acting was sub-par, but I thought it was genuinely creepy and aesthetically pleasing to watch.

Also, The Fearless Vampire Killers. Yes, its comedy/horror. But brilliantly done so. It totally achieves being completely hilarious and completely chilling at the same time. The score is also a plus. Whats more, is I think I get ultra chilled watching Sharon Tate look amazing and well, we all know what happened to her irl.

Anywho, what about yours? :hapwave:

Nightbreed...when the name Clive Barker is heard they think of Hellraiser.
Session 9....psychological and creepy
The Night Flyer....The reporter and the killer he is after are very much alike.

Redneck Zombies - One of my favorite zombie flicks, and Troma flicks.
Silver Bullet - One of the few werewolf movies that's close to being scary.
The Beast Must Die - Just a fun film.
Brainscan - Trickster kicks ass.
Cemetery of Terror - I thought it was a pretty fun mix of Evil Dead, Halloween and zombies.
Burial Ground - Just brilliant crapiness.
Graveyard Disturbance - Hey, it's bad, but it's really entertaining.
I Bought a Vampire Motorcycle - Very cool movie that I rarely hear anything about.
Stephen King's The Shining - Better than the original. Yupp. Shut up.
The Ugly - Well made psychological film.

Anyways, I'm going to agree with Meta with Silver Bullet. And while it wasn't really horror (dark drama really) I always thought The Quiet was under rated. One of the better dark-side-of-suburbia flicks.

-Midnight (hillbilly satanists always rule!)
-The Deadly Spawn (gory alien monsters who will kick your ass)
-Killer Workout aka Aerobicide (hilariously "80's" slasher)
-The Rejuvenator (gooey experiements!)
-Cut & Run (more of a cannibal/jungle/exploitation)
-Blood Freak (pro-Jesus, anti-drug, turkey monster 70's flick)

...just a few lesser known titles that come to mind.

Videodrome - Haven't heard many people talk about it, it's great.
Bug - William Friedkin + Psychological Thriller = Masterpiece.
Schramm - Really great psychological journey through a disturbed mind.
Blood Feast 2: All You Can Eat - Intentionally funny this time. Hilarious.
Behind The Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon - No-one talks about how great this movie is. Haha.

Ha! Cut and Run - Michael Berryman and Willie "Buddy" Aames ( Charles in Charge fan)
Never hear anyone mention this. Pretty good flick.
Killer Workout....I have that under the title Bitch Witch, was hoping they'd release it and clean up the picture.
Gotta love the Deadly Spawn, especially when that lady gets her face ripped off. And the kid gets my vote for toughest kid in ever in a movie. He stood there and watched his mom's severed head get devoured by monsters and took it like a man!

Was Midnight about the girl who gets molested by her step dad and runs away only to be caught by some weirdos? I know there are 2 movies w/ the same name, but that's the only one I can remember.

Behind The Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon - No-one talks about how great this movie is. Haha.

Already a classic to me. One of the very best horror movies of this decade. The only pure slashers I hold higher are Halloween '78 and Sleepaway Camp 1 +2 and Friday the 13th. I exclude NOES and Child's Play. Not slashers to me.

"Where we are going, we don't need eyes to see". Used to be so scared when he turned around to face the camera after he said that.
Frailty was excellent, I don't hear much about that movie either which is strange.

Gotta agree with Leslie Vernon, that was one of the best slasher/ newer films I've seen in a long time.

And yes, I would also agree Midnight is not for everyone andwas pretty young when I saw it too! Really great list of movies in here!

I just enjoy the Leprechaun series, except for 4. I still can't get over the "alien death sentence." I am glad I'm not the only one to like Santa's Slay. The opening scene made me think it was going to be an A lister with Chris Kataan, James Caan and Fran Dresher. Oh how I laughed...

"Creature" (1985). Esentially, it's an "Alien" rip-off, but a damn fun one. It also had two things Alien didn't have-sex and over-the-top violence!

"Abberation" (1997). An odd ecological horror flick about two people terrorized by mutant geckos in a cabin during the winter. The only thing that killed the atmospheric, 80's vibe this movie had going on was the terrible CGI (the close-ups of the geckos were puppets.)

I don't know if you would consider this horror or not but I've always thought "The Mothman Prophecies" was quite an underrated film. It has some genuinely creepy moments and the score is very haunting IMO.

Another underrated film, also IMO, is Clownhouse. Yes I'm aware of the controversy surrounding but if you can get past that just enjoy the film itself it's actually pretty good.

Phantasm

I don't think anyone could say this is underrated at all. Phantasm is one of my all time favorites and from what I can tell most horror fans also hold it in pretty high regard. Booooooooooooooooooooy!

Dead End and The Mist get my vote. Many people I know hated the Mist for one reason or another. Dead End was one of the first movies that used the "all a dream that foretold something" ending , and genuinely surprised me at the time.
Another that gets my vote is Halloween III. I'm sure this actually makes quite a few underrated lists, but the lack of Michael Myers really doesn't bother me, and the story keeps me entertained. Kinda wish to a point that we could have seen more of John Carpenter's idea to take the Halloween series in an antholoical direction.

I think Day of the dead USED to be underrated, like say 10 years ago. In recent years it's regained some of the love that it rightfully deserves. When it was first released people labled it as shit and a huge disapointment to end Romero's "dead trilogy" at the time.

There are so many underrated ones, but I'll list a few:

Nosferatu the Vampyre (1979) with Klaus Kinski... that alone should make you want to see it given the fact of how great of an actor he was, plus he was pretty much like a horror character in reality *lol*... I miss him :-(

Crawlspace: Another Kinski horror film that a lot of people don't even know about. It's both disturbingly scary and quite funny!

Joshua: Yes I know that this is pretty much a twin to The Omen, but what you get with this film more so, is the visualization of a slow physical and mental breakdown of a family caused by a charmingly quiet son... who's not the son of the devil.

The Sleepaway Camp Series: Some parts are quite interesting and are very different from it's slasher siblings. Plus I laughed my ass off of my friend's couch when I heard the part in Unhappy Campers when they took a stab at The Facts of Life!!!
