I would never have classified Hellboy 2 as a horror film.

Also isn't Cloverfield a sci-fi movie?

there wasn't 10 good horror films that hit the theatres in 2008, I missed a lot of the DTV stuff. Not a great year for horror films and Hellboy is a fantasy flick..

gotta agree with steelba....I couldn't scrap up a top ten list.

For me there weren't so many good horror films in 2008, the ones i did quite like were..

The Strangers (actually suprised me, will prob buy it)
Quarantene
Mirrors
Eden Lake

I can't bring myself to say I fully enjoyed The Strangers...the first half was great and then it just let out a horrendous fart for an ending.

Based on nudity (female, of course):

Zombie Strippers (too liberal for my taste)

Wicked Lake (what the hell with full frontals?)

Wizard of Gore (Uncut) - suicide girls

Hell Ride (not horror but...)

Brain Dead (cheesy! Jim Wynorski! Pinocchio's Revenge director!)

Mother of Tears (script sucks, gore and nudity rock)

The Ruins and Mirrors - Amy Smart and Laura Ramsey's buns...

I'm torn on Zombie Strippers. One part of me wants to see it because of Robert Englund...and the other side knows how bad an actress Janna Jameson is.

After watching it last night for my first time, I will definitely say that Midnight Meat Train was the best horror flick of 2008.

You're shying away from a film called "Zombie Strippers" because of potentially bad acting?

...Does this seem funny to anybody else here but me?

This is just a dumb statement to me.... you know a film is bad, because you didn't see it?

It really was a weak year for horror...but the ones I thought were the best (no real particular order):

Repo! The Genetic Opera
The Ruins
Rogue
Midnight Meat Train (not phenomenal, but a lot of strong parts)
Let The Right One In
Wizard of Gore (saved by Glover's performance)
Quarantine (saw it before I saw Rec...thought it was good for what it was)
The Killing Gene
The Strangers
Stuck

Honorable mentions go to the ghost house underground titles. And to the ones that aren't considered full blown horror but have horror elements:

Doomsday
Cloverfield
Hellboy 2

Luris Blear
12-26-2008, 10:30 PM
Triloquist Machine Girl Jack Brooks, Monster Slayer Zombie Strippers
There are others that I didn't want to put on the list: it's hard to call any Lost Boys movie true horror. The US version of One Missed Call was terrible.

There are also three movies I had hoped to see but never did: Mirrors, Midnight Meat Train, Teeth. I have a good feeling that all three would have made the list.

In 2008, I mostly ignored the family-friendly horror movies and caught up on the quality stuff I had been missing.

These are just opinions so don't take to seriously.

1. The Strangers
Was weak and uninteresting, I couldn't bring up any emotion or caring for the two leads. Not to mention I spent a lot of time, a lot of time, questioning the actions there in by the set leads. The killers were trying to be interesting with the weird mix of the three, but didn't get there.
2. Hellboy 2
I gotta go with this one not being horror, I'd definitely classify it under action/comic (aka spider-man, batman and the like) All though, I do agree it was a wonderful movie. So fun and entertaining, much better then the first one.
3. Cloverfield
this movie rocked and rocked hard. I thoughtthe first 25 min or so was weak as I was watching, but really what was I expecting. They had to setup characters. As far as monster movies go this one stands on it's own.
4. Mirrors
haven't seen
5. Monster slayer
I saw this movie before it was complete, at a test screening at ottawa U. It was a hoot to watch, but the special effects weren't done and all the wires where there and such. Robert Englund was just having a good old time on camera. But, I don't know if I can put it up there with the best.
6. The ruins
gory and clastrophobic even though it all takes place outside. Don't want to say anything else, if you haven't seen, check it.
7. Saw 5
omg another saw, yawn.
8. Quarantine
haven't seen this yet and looking forward to it at some point.
9. Dark Floors
haven't seen this either but waiting to check it out, looks like an interesting and fun ride. But check out Dance of the Dead, wonderfully entertaining film and it's great to see kids playing kids.
10. Resident Evil: Degeneration
haven't seen but I can't believe this franchise produced anything good, enough said.

Dude, that movie was so hilarious! I mean, the scene at the end answering the question about the implants, classic! Not to mention that things didn't turn out the way I had first imagined, it took a couple of interesting turns I wasn't expecting, and there was some pretty good gore. Plus, it was something different for once. All in all, it was a solid 6/10 imo. Thanks though. It was hard putting that list together, kind of a disappointing year.

buffyslayedme717
01-12-2009, 04:08 PM
I agree the implant was great...and if the rest of the movie had been as entertaining as the last fifteen minutes then it would have been phenomenal. I would go with a 5/10 because it was at least competently made. And that song was beyond irritating. Yeah, really disappointing horror year. 2009 already looks to be better.

levil666
01-12-2009, 04:23 PM
I hear ya. I actually had forgotten about that horrible song, almost as bad as the one in See No Evil, that takes it down a peg, but still, the killfest really made it worthwhile. Plus, the PSA at the end which left it open for a sequel... sad thing is, although it isn't that good, for this year, it actually was.:sadbye:

3 - Funny Games remake

I'm redoing my list!

I just hope 2009 will be better for horror films.

I liked "The Strangers" and "House" the most but there was some decent ones out there as well. Such as "Jack Brooks: Monster Slayer", "Quarantine", "Diary of the Dead", "Carver", and some others I can't think of at the moment.

I don't think I can come up with 10 horror movies I really liked in 2008.

Quarantine, MMT and The Orphanage were alright.

Dude I gotta tell you, when I was reading your post I was listening to Sick Of You by GWAR and it goes perfectly with your sig. gif. It was great haha.

But the best horror movie I saw in 08 was Midnight Meat Train, I was VERY impressed by it.

and some of you are putting in movies from '07 like 30 Days Of Night and Doomsday.

7. Midnight Meat Train
Thats it for this year, let's hope 2009 has more to choose from; thoguht it's not olooking good so far, more of a "favorite 10 remakes of 2009" list to come soon. :wavecry:

Why is everyone saying The Mist? That came out in '07.

I didn't care for any of the horror movies mentioned that I've seen, I've yet to see The Strangers, Midnight Meat Train, and Let The Right One In.

I guess Fear(s) of the Dark would be my choice.
