Since news broke that a Cowboy Bebop live-action movie was in the works, it had been rumored that Keanu Reeves would play the lead, Spike Spiegal. Now it looks like that’s true. MTV (http://moviesblog.mtv.com/2008/12/17/keanu-reeves-eager-to-do-something-good-with-cowboy-bebop-movie/)interviewed Reeves on the project and it seems like he really knows the anime, which means we might actually get a good adaptation.

“It’s got a Western quality, a Western film noir aspect to it,” Reeves said of why he’s such a big fan of Shinichiro Watanabe and Keiko Nobumoto’s groundbreaking series. “It’s got so much style to it, and that’s part of its appeal. That kind of Old West, bordertown, low-tech science fiction aspect.”

The flick is currently being put together by Erwin Stoff, a producer who has spent the last two decades working almost exclusively on Reeves projects, and recently set the film up at 20th Century Fox. “We’ve got the rights, we’ve got a writer,” Keanu explained. “He’s putting together a scene outline.”

Reeves revealed that this outline for the flick is currently focusing on the origins of the fictional “Bebop” drug developed by the military, which provides its users with a brief surge of superhuman reflexes and awareness. “We’re taking the Red Eye [story], the beginning part of the series,” he explained, “and then we’ll deal with the end of the series. We’re trying to figure out [the time frame]. We’re looking at the story right now.”

Since the beloved 26-episode show (as well as the feature film) didn’t necessarily maintain a linear style of storytelling, Reeves said that somewhere between the Red Eye origins and the “Bebop” conclusion, they’ll be picking out various highlights for their own use.

“Yeah, it’s so episodic and so disconnected. We’re trying to figure out what pieces to put together to tell one story,” he explained. “Because it’s such a short form, to make a 2 hour version [will be tough]. And it’s got so much of an origin-story obligation; you’ve got to get people up to speed, but you don’t want to do much of that. There are a lot of things to take into consideration, but we think we can do something good.”

:hmmm:

As long as he doesn't have to try an accent, I'll give him the benefit of the doubt.

I tried watching the anime, but just couldnt get into it. I'd give a live action version a shot though.

I think my cousin put it best: Keanu Reeves has the acting ablity of wood.

All in all, I can't see it living up the Anime in general, let alone with Reeves as Spike.

Yeah, the only one I saw was the one with that sluggy creature that was left in the fridge.

But, it seems Keanu's enthusiastic enough. I...guess I'd check it out...

Now that I had a problem with, and it was the same problem Full Metal Alchemist and Bleach. I just didn't buy into the action and slap stick comedy being blended the way it did. I don't mind action comedy, but when the character is fighting for his life in one scene and is bleeding and everything, then later get's smacked and his eyes are all twirly with a gian knot growing up, it think it just ruins it. The only exeptions I've ever found was Tenchi and Inuyasha.

I think it blended well enough. Full metal I thought was an amazing anime. I love it. I used to like inuyasha but then I realized just how retarded and repetetive it really is. Let me demonstrate a simple rundown of every episode.

*ahem*

INUYASHA!
KAGOME!
INUYASHA!
KAGOME!
INUYASHA!
SESHOMURU!
KILALA!
MOROKU!
SONGO!
INUYAHA!
KAGOME!

WINDSCAR!

*The end*

So now, Monotone Reeves is playing Spike.....anyone else have any ideas for the other characters?

I have no idea for Jet, but my friend Austin told me while we where talking about this that she thought Angelina Jolie could pull off Fey Valentine.

I think Ron Pearlman would make a great Jet but that's just my opinion. It's at this point I realize that I'm not even sure if I'm thinking of the right guy. Jet is the one with the bionic arm thing right?

Correct, he lost it when he was a Police Officer. He's balding with hair on his sides and back of his head, is often the cook of the ship and performs gardening, drives the Bebop and flys his own smaller ship with a grapling hook on it.

Shit.... Well all I have to say is Reeves better not fuck this up, it had better be his best performance. And I agree, Jet should be played by Perlman, hes the right body type and he can pull off Jet's attitude well. Fey shouldnt be played by Angelina Jolie, but MAYBE Kate Beckinsale could pull it off, but Fey needs to be slightly ditzy. Ed I've no clue who could play her. and Ein should be voiced by George Clooney ahahaha (hope you guys got that South Park joke)

News update.

Keanu Reeves is set to play interstellar bounty hunter Spike Siegel in the upcoming big screen version of Cowboy Bebop.

Erwin Stoff (The Day the Earth Stood Still) will produce while Peter Craig will write the screenplay. Sunrise, Inc., the producer of the anime series, will be involved in the production of the film as well.

I havn't seen The Day the Earth Stood Still, but I heard about the beating it got from critics, and now it's producer is on for Bebop. :negative:

I don't think it's as bad as it's getting rated. But it's not great either. Just a movie... Nothin special.

Well there's absolutely no deny it now, Keenu is Spike in the movie, source after source keeps comfirming it. Like today on Attack Of The Show on their The Feed segment they announced it as well. Now that its stone cold fact that Reeves has the part I want to see the rest of the cast announced sometime soon. As for the movie itself Fox better not skimp on the budget at all, I want this to be this generation's Star Wars, but that's probably TOO high hopes for this.

Anyway from here on out I guess it's a wait and see situation.

This just shows how little into anime I have been for the past few months. I mean I still love it, but I've been on anime hiatus for over a year now. I wasn't even aware a Live Action Cowboy Bebop film wa sin the works. However, Keaneu....I'm not seeing it.
