I mean, the series was pretty much rolling along. Friday the 13th part 6 is widely viewed as the best of the series and part 7 was pretty solid as well.
Then came Jason Takes Manhatten. I think this film was actually the start of the downfall of the series. The first attempt to change the subject of the typical F13 storyline. Take Jason out of Crystal Lake but maintain enough of the overall story to be consistent.
So the opening scene of JGTH was pretty solid.
But then, the cheesiness of part 8 disintigrated into the outright embarassment of JGTH.
First of all, if you want to see this plot in a quality film, check out The Hidden.
Otherwise, after 8 movies they suddenly decided to change the character of Jason in 2 fundamental ways. First, and most obvious, they turned him into some sort of body-hopping Zombie. Odd how that didn't occur in the first 8 movies.
Second, as if it wasn't enough to rip the main plot off The Hidden, they ripped off Halloween by creating a bizarre motivation of Jason to kill his family members.
If you look at it as a standalone movie you might find some positives but as a part of the F13th series it was a complete disaster.
Freddy's glove at the end? :puke:

The glove was the only part I found redeemable about the whole movie. It showed that New Line was ready to go with their two horror titans to clash.
The body-hopping and family story line was just awful, just fucking awful. All of a sudden, he has a sister that pops out of nowhere, and the only way he can die is if a family member kills him. The writer must have had such a hard-on for The Evil Dead and Halloween that they wanted to combine all 3 and make a nice hybrid. But what was a result was shit mixed with puss, covered by vomit.

6 and 7 were great but 8 and this one were really horrible. Whats your take on Jason X? For me it was one of the better comedies i've ever seen.

I hated JGTH. Jason X had only one great part. The holographic version of Crystal Lake haha.

I remember reading at the time that they said they had no idea about The Hidden and how it had the same plot but I find that hard to believe. If it is true then it shows they had no concept of what was going on in the genre but more likely they tried to exploit a low budget film.
As for the glove, it was pure marketing. I go back and forth about what was the most embarrassing moment in horror movie history, the Freddy's glove thing at the end of JGTH or the remote control leg scene in the TCM remake.
As for Jason X, we'll get to that.

At least with the glove, it made sense. Freddy was already in Hell, and Jason had just gone down with him. The remote control leg is just illogical. An incest-loving inbred who lives in the backwoods is a robotics expert?

Never heard more laughter in a theater in my life during a horror movie.

I dug the hell out of it. It's one of my favs. It doesn't fit in at all in the series and I've never looked at in that sense, so as a stand alone I've always enjoyed it.
I've also enjoyed all of the F13th movies including part 8. The only one I couldn't stomach was the awful Jason X.

Worst in the series in my opinion. Beginning was great, but the rest was straight-up horrible. At least the sequels like Jason X and Manhattan were somewhat entertaining.

This one blows, and the plot to Freddy vs Jason blows too. Should've just had them both in space to duke it out.

Pretty brief "analysis" on a movie that is essentially the Hidden 3.

Also weak when they added the Crieghton Duke character in movie 9. Another ripoff of Halloween in an attempt to have a Loomis-like person hunting Jason.

GTH sucked, and X was even worse. Takes Manhatten has the redeeming value of Jason in a boxing match. :straightface2:

The worst in the series will always be the one where "jason" ended up being the ambulance driver. That has been and will always bee the worst. Having said that? Jason Goes to hell is pretty bad. It has some memorable stuff though. I loved the way Jason looked in this movie. His mask sunken into his bloated dead face. That was great. And how can this thread be made without ever talking about Tony the Wonder llama? HILARIOUS. The eating of the blackheart was great to. And I laughed my ass off when he punched that woman in the diner in the face.
The storyline was crap though. You rarely saw Jason at all. The body hoping crap was ridiculously stupid. That had never happend in any of the movies, yet now it became true. Stupid. And he could only be killed by a family member? And it was EXTREMELY stupid that all the family member had to 2 was stab him. Are you fucking serious? Stab him!??!?!?!!! RETARDED. Personally my favorite in the series was part 7.

The only part of GTH I remember is the sex scene, which is pretty good if I can still remember it. Otherwise, horrible movie, script belonged in the garbage.

Good point about the appearance of Jason, he looked excellent.
That's part of what was so frustrating for me about this movie. It started off promising but all of a sudden I was like wait..what?

I remember how much my head hurt watching this one for the first time. A truly painful experience. The plot was so absurd and the writing was horrible. Not that the other films are academy worthy, but at least they were interesting and consistent. This one went into another direction for no apparent reason. Cheesy, boring, dumb, and pointless are just some of the words that come to my mind when I think of "The Final Friday"
Another New Line bomb.
I agree with what everyone said for the most part.
The one aspect I enjoyed was when Jason was on screen as himself. I thought it was arguably the best of the Hodder era Jason with Part 7 being the other. I thought they at least made Jason more aggressive with this film and had him grunt albeit stupid. It was somewhat consistent with the fact that he grunted in the earlier films.
This was one of the bloodiest in the series and did feature one great kill scene with the tent sex scene. Other than that, this film was weak.
Part 8 I did not hate as much. Easily the worst of the Paramount era films but when compared to what New Line did with the series, its definitely watchable outside of the score which I thought was a bit weak outside of the intro song montage in NY.
With a better budget, Part 8 could have been something better but Part 7 was the last of the good camp style Friday the 13th.

Haha...yeah...and then the "sleeping bag bash", lmao. I rewound that scene like twenty times because I found it so hilarious.
