View Full Version : The Faculty

Watched this one today (3rd viewing overall) and forgot just how cool this little sci-fi/horror thriller is. One thing for sure the plot is not something we haven't seen before, pretty much borrows from "Invasion of the Body Snatcher" but it's not like director Robert Rodriguez denies this. He said in an interview once that "The Faculty" is alot like "Invasion of the Body Snatchers" meets "The Breakfast Club." I like it regardless.

Good cast:

Jordana Brewster
Clea DuVall
Laura Harris
Josh Hartnett
Shawn Hatosy
Salma Hayek
Famke Janssen
Piper Laurie
Christopher McDonald
Bebe Neuwirth
Robert Patrick
Usher
Jon Stewart long
Daniel von Bargen
Elijah Wood

MILD SPOILER********

and a great soundtrack IMO. The only thing I found wrong with this flick is that they gave away too much in the beginning of the flick. Letting us know right from the start that aliens were taking over the adults was a bad idea. Keeping us in the dark, not knowing for sure who was taken in by the aliens would have worked better in my opinion...more suspense. Still, the flick works for me anyway. It's just one of those movies that I'll probably never grow tired of seeing.

Thoughts?

Fun movie with a surprising cast. I saw it in theaters, and caught some of it again recently and was amazed at how many familiar faces were in the film. :hmmm:

Remember seeing it in theaters back when I was in high school and really digging it. Stood out among the Scream clones at the time. Rodriguez's underrated gem.

I have been a fan of Clea DuVall since seeing her in Little Witches. :mrpervert:

Still couldn't make it through this movie. Like Koolmike said, they give away a lot at the beginning. From that point on, the entire movie just felt like it was doing its best to be wholesome entertainment with a slight innuendo of edginess.

Good movie, great soundtrack. I had completely forgotten that Rodriguez directed this. I remember when I first saw it doing a double take at the fact John Stewart was in this, and being disappointed that his role was so short lived. I guess that my only regret is not seeing it in so long. I guess it is time to cash in that free rental at blockbuster.

agreed about the 90's lack of quality, this was a Sci-fi film not a horror movie though :smokin:

koolmike
01-13-2009, 01:13 PM
It's categorized as a sci-fi/horror film.

IMDB lists it as:

IMDB:
Genre: Horror | Mystery | Sci-Fi | Thriller more

Darkgod
01-13-2009, 01:30 PM
It might be sci-fi in the sense of having to do with aliens, but it is definitly a horror movie as well.

steelba
01-13-2009, 01:35 PM
I didnt find anything horror about it, it was so light hearted and that ending :die:
I'd go for Sci-fi/Fantasy/Action, but to me it wasn't a horror flick regardless of what imdb says

It was decent though, but even seeing it as a teen upon it's release I thought it was timid. JMO though.

koolmike
01-13-2009, 02:11 PM
Well, it definitely was inteneded to pay homage to the wave of "B" sci-fi movies of the 50's, but I do see an element of horror here and there, primarily in some of the kills. If anything I would call it Horror lite. (Like BUD Light :D)

ehhh... the 90's blew for the horror genre... but this is one that went against the tide.

To name a few: Cannibal! The Musical, Terror Firmer, Brainscan, Castle Freak, Dellamorte Dellamore, Braindead, Aftermath, Evil Ed, The Ugly, Army of Darkness, Bad Moon, Bio-Zombie, Decampitated, In The Mouth Of Madness, Jacob's Ladder, Ravenous, Subconsious Cruelty, Demon Knight, Tremors.

Of course it's not as good as the 80's and 70's, but it has alot of good ones. Enough great ones for me to think that it didn't blew.

01-13-2009, 02:53 PM

By the way, Candyman was made in the 90's.

The movie was pretty cool, kinda like Fast Times At Ridgemont High but with aliens and Robert Patrick (who kicks ass btw) i give it 7/10. i would give it a higher rating but the story was rather predictable...

I caught this once on TV...but it was edited for television so all the good stuff was probably cut out, and I think I missed the beginning. I'm going to give this another watch eventually. From what I saw it seemed okay.

Good point Mike, but all those movies were made before 1983.

Del Toro is the only director I can think of that does good sequels since 2000.
