As a general rule I'm not interested in prequels. They usually take place because the filmmakers/producers don't know where to take the story, or it simply isn't worth going any further. In the case of Underworld 3, I was especially unenthused about the prospects of a prequel because the last two films dive so haphazardly into flashbacks that we already know this tale. So...based on that...I looked to this film for what it can offer in and of itself.

The cast is top notch. The shakespearean plot is familiar and easy to follow. (As opposed to its convoluted predecessors.) The visual effects are top notch (for the most part). There is plenty of blood and carnage for the fanbase.

If there is a major criticism with this film I would say it's the edit. The drama and dialogue scenes are put together with competence, but a couple of the action sequences are cut so tightly that they are virtually incomprehensible. It's another classic case of producers with short attention spans being afraid to let an action sequence breath. Often times it happens for a reason. For example, an actor lacks the physicality to perform onscreen in a fight, a lack of coverage, a small budget, etc. Other times it happens because studio execs don't understand action, and as a result, the audience is assaulted with quick cuts and an overblown sound mix instead of a visually compelling emotional progression through a high stakes sequence. In the case of 'Lycans' it's the latter.

Overall though, it's a good little night at the movies. Nothing that will stick with you a year from now (though not many films do that anymore), but a fun B-movie souped up to look like an "A" that delivers what it promises.

I enjoy it. It makes me want to see the first Underworld again.

Will wait for DVD for this one. Liked the first well enough but the sequel lacked.

I dig the first 2, but I'll wait for this one on DVD. I agree with what RIP said. Theres so many flashbacks in the previous flicks we already know this whole story. Why make a prequal after 2 movies? I'm not huge on seeing it, but I will eventually.

I agree. I can't wait to see it. Viktor is one of the best vampires I've seen in a long time.

It will join my DvD collection, if nothing else to complete the series (already have first 2) and the fact that I place Underworld's werewolf design and transformation sequences in my top 5 werewolf concepts.

Thought the first two were just harmless fun, but I really dug this one.

Oddly enough, someone took me to see this as a b-day present. Hard to say no to that kind of invite.

Pretty straight forward film. Covers the birth of Lucian, his love interest, his rise to leader of the lycans, and the eventual revolt against the vamps. Whole film takes place in a castle fortress and the immediate countryside.

A nice film, if you are interested any story gaps left by the first film's flashbacks or wanting more detail on Lucian. Main character from first two films gets a passing mention at end of film, but for the most part this film is about Vic, Lucian, and Sonya.

Fight sequences were a bit rushed, but thats not surprising since it the same rushed feeling present in the first two films. A bit more dismemberment then the first films, usually wolfies losing body parts.

As prequels go, not that bad. Didn't hurt the first two films, but didn't add too much to the series since almost all of the story covered in the film was touched by flashbacks in the first film.

5/10. Didn't suck, but didn't impress.

Finally got to see this one today. Better than expected. Special FX were better this time around and the story was much better. The chemistry between Lucian and Sonja was actually believabe and the love scene was fitting for this type of horror film.

One mistake the film makers made here was in the title. Should have named it:

Underworld: Rise of Lucian - Lord of the Lycans

There was alot of focus on his character which was fine with me. Interesting character IMO.

Not a bad film.

(Liked the werewolves more in this one for some reason.)
