Early on Friday, January 23, an unidentified male assailant, whose face was reportedly painted with black and white make-up, armed with a knife, went on a rampage in a childcare center near Brussels.

Sky News said the crèche was attacked by a knife-wielding man wearing black and white facepaint, "like a joker," who is allegedly extremely thin, with red hair. (Update: U.K.'s Independent reporter Vanessa Mock in Dendermonde, noted on Saturday, 24 January 2009, that the man has "his face painted like the Joker character in Batman.")

This crèche (French for "daycare") is located in northwestern Belgium.

Researcher Theo Paijmans, reporting via email to me, while watching the Belgian media, writes that the death toll is two (2) babies and one female daycare worker fatally stabbed, with 10 children and 2 daycare workers wounded.

Early alerts said five people have been killed. Flemish VTM television at first had said three children and two adults have been killed, and other reports said a further 20 people have been injured.

Reports have been confusing and breaking fast, all day.

At first, Belgian officials would only confirm an incident was taking place in Dendermonde, west of Brussels, but could not give any details of reported deaths or injuries.

A huge police operation took place in the town. The suspect was finally arrested, an hour after the stabbings, at a supermarket. What was he doing there?

Here's the site with an update.

Ok....I loved the Dark Knight, and I thought the Joker in it was Legendary. But this is fucked up. I always try and debate the classic "It's violent video games and movies and shows that cause violence today" but shit like this doesn't help.

I love the leap from white/black facepaint and red hair jumps to the white/red face paint and green haired batman villian. Sounds more like Ronald McDonald than the Joker...

Or a joker from an old school deck of cards, or perhaps an early-color printing of a fairy tale book.

Or even a morality-play style figure come to kill the fairy-loving pagans.

I hate to say, but black & white paint is more in line with Insane Clown Posse than with The Joker.

Or even some cracked Belgian in desperate need of psychiactric care... or a bullet.

Yeah, I wouldn't put this on the Joker or the dark knight. Actually, I don't like to stick this kinda bullshit with any kind of media. The guy was just a murdering psychopath who just decided to dress up as such. Somehow, I doubt that movies have any effect on criminals' psyches. And besides, that's what he just is; a child-killing-looney who deserves nothing better than to have rabid dogs chewing at his face while being raped by a huge guy wearing a pretty pink tu-tu (or however you spell that).

How do they know he wasn't dressed up as the Crow? Or maybe, he just liked grease paint? They're always quick to blame the media because it diverts the blame from themselves.

I heard about this a while back, I never understand how 5 people die in a knife attack, I know 3 were kids but you would think between 2 adults someone would get the damn knife away from that skinny goth ginger.
