LOS ANGELES, Calif. -- Stephen King's opinion may drive a stake through the heart of "Twilight" author, Stephenie Meyer.

In an interview with USA Weekend, the bestselling author compared Meyer with J.K. Rowling , the author of the Harry Potter series.

According to Stephen, "Both Rowling and Meyer, they're speaking directly to young people... The real difference is that Jo Rowling is a terrific writer and Stephenie Meyer can't write worth a darn. She's not very good."

While Stephen may not be a fan of Stephenie's writing, he understands the appeal of the series.

"People are attracted by the stories, by the pace and in the case of Stephenie Meyer, it's very clear that she's writing to a whole generation of girls and opening up kind of a safe joining of love and sex in those books. It's exciting and it's thrilling and it's not particularly threatening because it's not overtly sexual."

He further explains, "A lot of the physical side of it is conveyed in things like the vampire will touch her forearm or run a hand over skin, and she just flushes all hot and cold. And for girls, that's a shorthand for all the feelings that they're not ready to deal with yet."

I have read some books that King has endorsed, and I will say that his tastes do differ considerably, but I will agree with him about Meyer's work

I find that I generally agree with King on most things. This is one of those things.

When you've written one of the best damn modern vampire books of all time, you can lay the smackdown all you want...

He's also written enough crap in his time that he should know it when he sees it.

He also combined Western, Scifi, Fantasy and Drama in a 7 Piece Epice Series and made them all work perfectly.

Agreed. I read this the other day and couldn't help think that with some books of his I'd rather read Twilight (with her overly descriptive settings) than IT (with its overabundance of useless backstory).

Still, he is better than she. But we also need to take into account she's writing mainly for teenage girls, not well versed adults like King.

(I don't like Harry Potter either.)

King has had some terrible stories, but in the end, it's because he can write about anything! Meyers is a glimmer in a pan that will soon fade (hopefully.) As for King, he will be remembered as one of our nations literary greats.

The first four, anyway.

But yeah. It's nice to see King actually showing he has a strong backbone. If the majority of his horror was this brave then there would be no complaining about him at all.

I have read both Kings books and the Twilight ones. I did not think that the twilight were all that bad when it game to love and sex. The sex stuff was mostly in the last book and she did not go into a whole lot of detail, I wouldn't be bothered if my sisters and her friends read Twilight, I mean most of the kids that are reading her books already know what sex is and I am sure that the ones that don't know what it is, their parents wouldn't let them read a vampire book anyway.

I like both authors.. but I do prefer Stephen King. I continously read Needful Things, Thinner, Pet Semetary, and Desperation.
