I would say that I am a fan of any movie that takes place in a single setting for one reason; The writing and dialogue has to be on point. The Mist, Cube, Misery and Clerks come to mind and now Hellevator joins their ranks.
Set in an underground dystopian world, Director Hiroki Yamaguchi assaults viewer with images of a world straight on out of a Philip K. Dick novel. Then the elevator doors shut and the mayhem begins.
Being stuck in an elevator is similar to flying on a plane. You are in a metal box and you have to trust that everyone who is in there with you is going to adhere to to the rules of society. Its when those rules break down that shit gets really scary. Its humanity at its most primal. The person chatting with you at the supermarket line might slit your throat for a drink of water if put in the right survival situation.
Luchino Fujisaki is believable as a terrified teenager who is trapped in this terrible situation with a Serial Rapist, who is being transported along with an Arsonist. The rest of the cast is also gives stand out performances that left me pondering how I would react if I was in their shoes.
The only con I had with the movie was this; I hate psychics, if I could do things a little different I would have changed that one aspect of the film. I think Steven King has tainted my opinion of them.
Whether or not you watch subtitled movies this is one you have to check out. It keeps a quick pace, cutting through the minutia out of every scene and its just balls-to-the-wall action and suspense. Queue it up or buy it, its worth the money
