Title: Silver Bullet

Also known as:
Cycle of the Werewolf (USA) (working title)
Stephen King's Silver Bullet (USA) (complete title)

Year: 1985

Genre: Horror

Language: English

Runtime: 95 min

Director: Daniel Attias

Writer: Stephen King

IMDb: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0090021/

Plot:
Marty Coslaw is a boy in a wheelchair who lives in a small town where strange murders occur every full moon. After a night of fireworks and a horrifying werewolf attack, Marty realizes that the killer is actually a werewolf. It's now up to Marty to convince his sister and his uncle that there's a flesh eating werewolf in town.

Our thoughts:
This wonderful werewolf movie was the very first horror film I ever saw, and here I am 15 years later still loving the film. "Silver Bullet" started my interest in horror flicks, and I'm pretty sure it's the reason for my love of werewolf movies too, so I have alot to thank this little thing for.

I'm not a reader myself and I haven't read Stephen King's story "Cycle Of The Werewolf", so I can't really compare it to the film, but I think it's a great story. It's set in a little town and it's all up to a little boy in a wheelchair, his sister and his uncle to hunt the werewolf. What makes the story even better is the fact that Marty is played by Corey Haim (who isn't really as cool as Corey Feldman, but still does a good job in some horrors), and "Uncle Red" is played by the almighty and crazy Gary Busey. I seriously think Gary Busey does a great job in this one too, so even better. Unlike many other films of this kind, there wasn't much convincing in this film, but it was still believable how they listened to what Marty had to say, just after minor convincing instead of an entire film where no one cares. What I like about the film is that it's one of the few werewolf movies that actually manages to be scary, ignoring that fact that it doesn't scare me anymore, but it's still obvious when a movie succeeds at scares and when a movie doesn't. The kills are set up like a slasher film where the werewolf is pretty much stalking before attacking it's prey, where I would say many other werewolf movies just goes for quick attacks and sudden "boo!" scares. Don't get me wrong, I like that too, but I don't find it as scary. And of course, like some slashers, the film keeps you guessing who the werewolf is, but you still find out who he is long before the last seconds.

In terms of special effects, I don't see what everyone is talking about when they talk shit about the look of the werewolf. I can agree that it's no "The Howling" wolfie, but I still think that it looks pretty realistic. Yes, it sort of looks like a bear, but to me that's just understandable. I mean, c'mon, a guy transforming into a wolf would probably be more bulky than a skinny wolf, therefor look more like a bear. It's obvious that it's a suit, but overall I would say it works pretty damn good. I can live with the fact that in this movie, the man becoming a werewolf mostly looks like he got claws, a bunch of hair and a bear/wolf head. As for gore effects, they look good mostly because of the fact that there isn't much of it. It's not a gory film at all, but we have some scratches and face wounds.

"Silver Bullet" is a highly underrated film that got ignored during the 80's because of films like "An American Werewolf In London" and "The Howling". They are all three great werewolf movies, and they are all very different from eachother, and yes, "Silver Bullet" may have the worst looking werewolf of the three, but story-wise I would say it's the better one in terms of werewolves. The film has a small town story where kids end up being heroes without the film being like Disney films, great locations in the woods, lots of stalking and suspense, kid in a wheelchair and Gary Busey are just a few of the reasons you should watch it.

Positive things:
- Gary Busey brings us some comic relief into the film.
- The custom made wheelchair called "Silver Bullet".
- Good werewolf. Yes, fuck you, I said it.
- One of the few werewolf movies that has good scares.
- Stephen King movies are usually a treat.
- A great nightmare sequence in a church.

Negative things:
- People's hate toward this film is stupid.
- The werewolf uses a bat in some scenes.
- The sister irritates me at times.

Rating:
Gore: 1/5
Nudity: 0/5
Story: 3.5/5
Effects: 2/5
Comedy: 1.5/5

I thought the werewolf looked like a really furry bunny with those ears but I liked the movie. Gary Busey before going crazy =.

Well, it might've looking like a furry bunny and all, but I think it looked pretty realistic...ish. I could imagine a wolf and man mix look like it did. The Howling, there we got bunny ears. Still awesome though.

Wicked review! Agreed, this is one of my favorite werewolf movies. It's underrated and is one of the few truly spooky werewolf movies I've ever seen. Gotta love Jay Chattaway's music and Gary Busey, too!

I bought "Cycle of the Werewolf' back when I was 13 and it was a great little novella. It has tons of great gory pictures of the werewolf feasting on people. The story is the exact same except it's not as family oriented, plus the gore is way heavier in the novella..

Cool review, I thought the gore was more than a one but other than that it's straight :D

I thought it was, and I forgot about of all those sweet pics in the book! Didn't it play itself out kinda like a calender, up to Halloween?

Something like that, month by month. Agreed, sweet book.

Great effort and review, during the summer I hope to make some reviews that are as detailed and effective like this one.

For the movie I thought it was sub-par, not one of my favorites when it comes to werewolves. :ahheh:

Good review... I totally agree. When I first saw this I was blown away, especially by the effectiveness of the fireworks, and by the bond in the family. I actually prefer it much more than the Howling, but maybe that's just me.
