Plot:
A New York girl named Jennifer leaves to go to a house in Connecticut to write her first novel, after several short stories. When she is starting to enjoy being there, and she actually manages to write some, four men starts to be a disturbance. One day when Jennifer is out in her boat, the men are back. They manage to bring her boat with them, and takes her to the woods, where she is raped by two of the men. Her stuggle to come back home becomes more and more horrifying when they follow her all the way home just to violently rape her over and over again. After all humiliation, rape and terror, Jennifer is left for dead. Two weeks pass and the rapist scumbags slowly becomes aware that she is still alive, and wants revenge.

Our thoughts:
It's known that one of my favorite exploitation films of all time is the Swedish rape-revenge film "Thriller: A Cruel Picture", and in several ways is "I Spit on Your Grave" like that film. However, where in "Thriller", the girl is being kidnapped and used for prostitution, Jennifer from this film is being raped over and over again by a bunch of scum, which I find is a much more disturbing situation. Maybe not in the long run and in real life, but in a film. Both films end in a great revenge, and while I do still enjoy "Thriller" a bit more, this film is without a doubt a sick film that deserves it's status.

The first time we see Jennifer raped is straight after they have grabbed the rope that is tied to her boat, which is a scene that I felt only made the "rapists" look like they were messing around with her, for shits and giggles, which made me hate the bastards alot but I also felt that the first raping felt fake. My head felt it was unrealistic to go from small pranks to rape, because they didn't seem very menacing to begin with, but the following two group rapes, that's when I really felt for the girl. They are raw, humiliating and violent, and Camille Keaton plays the role of Jennifer perfectly. There is never a doubt that the girl on the screen is going through the worst thing that has ever happened to her. After the last rape, that involves a cruel rape of a bottle, we're left feeling both sad and happy. Obviously the sadness is because of what we just saw, but happy because we know they think she is dead, and this can only lead to the revenge. Her revenge is both sexy and brutal. With sex as her bait, there are a few scenes where Jennifer is straight out hot. She lures the men to have sex with her (note: not rape), and before they know it they are either hanging in a rope, or getting their crotch cut open by a knife in a bathtub.

The movie contains blood but no gore, except for maybe one shot, put nudity it has plenty of. Both genders, so you ladies can enjoy some too (if you shut off the sound and ignore the sadistic story, of course). Mostly we see Jennifer naked, which is a treat, especially towards the end when we actually can enjoy the nudity without being disgusted by the fact that the same body that is nude is getting brutally raped, and of course it's hot with a naked girl killing scum.

The movie is very well acted, especially by Camille Keaton, but also by the whole male cast, maybe except for the guy who plays Matthew. It's not that it's bad acting, but Matthew is somewhat of retarded, and that's a hard role to play. But he is still believable enough.

This is a very brutal film that would be perfect to watch along with the equally sadistic "Thriller: A Cruel Picture" if you are having yourself a bit of a "exploitation night" in the sofa. I've heard that there is a remake on it's way, and I can assure you that it won't be even close to what this film is. If you want to watch a realistic portrayal of rape, followed by a badass revenge, watch this instead of waiting for the remake.

Positive things:
- No soundtrack at all. The brutality is only enhanced by this fact.
- Camille Keaton's acting.
- Camille Keaton's nudity.
- Very brutal. It has everything a fan of exploitation fan wants.
- The bathtub scene.

Negative things:
- Trying to think of something worth mentioning here but I can't.

I have to say that as a female, this movie messed my head up for awhile. I knew what it was about & all, but I didn't realize that damn near half the movie was of that girl being raped. And personally, I think she should have fucked them up a little more than what she did. Except for the bathtub scene of course...outstanding.:appl1: Overall, it WAS a half decent movie, but I doubt if I'll be able to stomach it again.


P.S. Metaphor, I think you can say that a negative thing about this is what I just mentioned...that there's TOO MUCH rape throughout the movie.

hhhmmmm, this movie was so good when it came out. i think its a movie more about revenge then rape though. the rape sceens were very intence and graghic, especially for the year of the film but it soon shifted away from that, as well it should. in the end you get a great movie with some great kill sceens. BTW i have only just found this site and i love it! great for us Horror fans!

Im a huge fan too, and watching it with the Joe Bob Briggs commentary offers a TON of great insider info on the film and the production / notoriety it has gained since its release. Its raw and shameful to watch, reminds me alot of Deliverance, but the revenge is made all the sweeter by the end, when you couldnt possibly hate the antagonists any more. This is a must see film for genre fans, I appreciate it more with each watch! Thanks for the review, Met :thumbup:

You're right about that right up until she walks home...I think she still coulda got revenge after the first 2 times. You guys gotta remember...I'm a female, so I view rape scenes a little bit differently. Not only that, but you're supposed to feel safe in your home right? It was just scary to know that they followed her home b/c I've had someone run up in my house with a gun & try some shit...keyword TRY...but that's besides the point. Oh, & it definitely doesn't take getting raped SEVERAL times to fuck a girl up...it only takes once, trust me.

this movie sucked, the gore affects were pathetic even for the seventies, the movie moved waaaaay too slow, and the killings werent near brutal enough. After a full hour of watching the movie, there was not a single cool death scene, but i did have to sit through this girl getting raped four times, which is not why i see a revenge flick. The rapes are necessary to give the character the motive to take revenge, but the movie is supposed to be about her getting killing these fucked up rednecks, but instead the whole film is about her getting raped and the revenge is so quick it seems like an afterthought. By the end of the movie i was thanking god it was finally over. I would be angry at it for stealing two hours of my life away but i got so bored with the movie that 45 minutes in i started reading an old HP Lovecraft story while i watched it. And Call of Cthulu was a million times better than this film. I give it about half a star, if that. COMPLETE WASTE OF TIME!

It was just a simple movie in the end IMO that really didn't require much gore to keep you attracted to the story. Plus, I liked the victims acting and how she turned sorta evil-like in her revenge; sorta losing herself in the process. :thumbup3:

i think its because of the the reactions to things that happen and also how things happen, eg if you'd been brutally raped you'd get the fuck away from the area i don't think you'd stick around to see what happens next.

and as for the revenge part, would that be one of the first things you think about! i don't think it would, maybe a while after but not like it happened in this. the same goes for last house on the left which is an awesome film.

Dated is often used to describe when a movie dates itself. Like Videodrome for instance, while still a great movie, the technology that's used in the movie clearly dates itself as to when it was made.

I Spit On Your Grave isn't necessarily a dated movie as it's about a girl taking revenge after she is raped. So while the cars and clothing style may date the movie, it doesn't really have any advert affect on the story or the effectiveness of the movie when a person watches it.
