Just curious what anime members are watching right now?

I'm still watching Naruto, but I stopped Bleach since they started showing them crappy fillers. I started watching Baccano! and Black Blood Brothers a while back, but I still haven't finished'em :shrugs:

It was pretty interesting.. little action, but the action that there was is very intense. Characters are likable, but of course there are the oddball eccentric ones. Overall, good entertaining anime.

Its one of those anime that went on way too long and has alot of fluff filler episodes. They could have cut it to 3 seasons and wouldnt have missed much. I'm stuck by my mentally unstable collecting habbits to finish off the series. Season 7 will likely sit on my shelf for months before I actually watch it.

I'll likely buy the box set for Gundam Wing 08th MS team to balance out my animation purchase in April.

I only like Gundam 08th MS team. It follows a basic group of grunts rather than the allstar elite heroes so it was easier to enjoy.

I never got into Naruto. Nothing wrong with it, just didnt grab me.

FrighT MasteR
07-16-2009, 03:23 AM
It's pretty much a remake. It follows the manga closer and the animation is slicker, and violence is kicked up a notch. Although the regular series was good, it didn't follow the manga much, and to be honest, dragged on at times.

With Ultimate since each episode is an OVA, the creators don't waste any time, so all the eps are action packed. Sadly, since the original distributor closed shop, Ultimate had to go to another company, which delayed the release of the 5th volume, which I'm still waiting on :myhead:

Both. I've read up on the series and the movies, a little confusing as to the order you're supposed to watch them. I think it's the first two movies, the first series, the third movie follows the first series storyline, the second series, then they have other movies that recap the first and second series in a two hour movie, then a re release of the first movie remastered and stuff. I think that's all I remember :whew:

How did you like the movies?

Yes, I know what you mean. The fillers of "Monster", while interesting, only serve to bring the main characters into situations where morality and redemption are called for, and yet we already GET what they're trying to establish under the theme of good and evil. The plot is sorta substantial, but from what I'm seeing now, it's essentially just Tenma following Johan from town to town. It seriously needs to pick up.

From the last FULL episode of "Bleach" I saw, I was around the part when Nel and her friends were introduced. And she spat up on Ichigo to heal him or whatever. But, as I've said, I've really fallen behind. I've missed many episodes since, and quite a bit in between.

Its about this world's best surgeon's greatest achievement, an undead girl-scientist called Franken Fran. Most of the stories are about people asking her to do certain favors because of her ability for extreme surgery, and bringing people back to "life". Usually stories end up in a funny/crotesque/both climax.

My favorite story is the one where she wants to help a girl who just lost her dog under a car, but she doesnt have any spare animal parts, so she inserts the dog's brains into a corpse of hairy fat middleaged man. Rest of the story is really funny, and disturbing Lassie-parody.

Already like it after the first ep. You can tell it's not gonna have a thick story, but there's a lot of action and interesting characters. First ep alone pits you right in the middle of battle between 3 invading leaders. Some good fighting, looking forward to catching the rest of the series.

OK, I've decided to give this Anime craze a shot..you can only watch so much bloody gore before your brain starts to ferment into..ummm, forget that last sentence, I can watch gore films til it leaks out my eyeballs...:D but anyway I picked two..Ergo Proxy and Berserk.

Ergo Proxy looks fuckin beautiful. All the muted colours really caught my eye. Long while back my friend Wrath recommended Berserk.....so here I go. I will report back later.... peace.

Even though I mentioned Ergo Proxy and Berserk, I went with steelba's recommends. I finished Elfen Lied which was fantastic! I didn't realise how these animes were so character and story driven. You can do anything in these series.

Both Lucy/Nyu are well portrayed. Lucy is scary, while Nyu is the lovable cutie, but to me, it was her two sharply distinguished natures, that was her strongest appeal.

The other standout is Nana, another Diclonius used by Kurama to help find Lucy and bring her back in. Though her personality is a little too cutesy, she is a wonderfuly tragic character who holds on to Kurama as being her father. She is always working to please him. I think this is a way to stay sane thru all the terrible experiments she went through. You'd have to be a heartless person not to feel for her, especially when things go particularly bad for her later on in the series.

The musical score is an added beauty which winds it all up and makes it work. It begins with “Lilium,” a wonderful opening number, which is sung in Latin by a female voice and sounds much like a church hymn. That theme, is revisited at certain times throughout the series, both as an instrumental piece and with a chorus. It sets the tone for the whole anime.

All in all this was a perfect start for my new journey.. Next is Claymore. Watched one episode so far.. :hmmm:

Except that all of the drama is completely unbelievable, and it drags on too long. All of the characters are ridiculously selfish too, wasn't to thrilled with this one.

5 or 6 at best. Clannad, Toradora, and Chobits are all Waay better examples of the genre.

That's why I'm watching re-runs. I miss not looking forward to a new episode each week but it really couldn't go anywhere once Ichigo hit Scarmask/Vastolord level. I mean, once someone can re-shape mountain ranges with the swing of a sword...neither the manga or anime could keep me invested once Aizen was in custody though.

Still, I love the original arc and all the battling with the Arrancar and Espada.

Well that's certainly a good place to start. Normally folks get exposed to something of questionable quality first and have to be reassured "there's lots better out there," LOL. That particular filmmaker is really unique. Millenium Actress and Paprika would also be worth checking out, also from Satoshi Kon. I haven't seen Tokyo Godfathers yet but have heard and read good things.

It's not the same sort of psychological drama as these, but another anime of epic proportions with a serious, artistic tone would be Katsuhiro Otomo's rendition of Osamu Tezuka's Metropolis:

http://www.crackle.com/c/Osamu_Tezukas_Metropolis/Osamu_Tezuka_s_Metropolis/2479965?c=US

...which is one of the last big animated films that I'm aware of that obviously used a big, multi-plane animation camera stand at a time most other productions were going digital. It has a texture quality and depth that I don't think I've ever seen in another anime.

Tezuka was basically the grandfather of anime. Some have compared him to Disney (along with Hiyao Miyazaki, who's still making films) because of his influence and impact, going back not quite a century. He's most known in the West for Mighty Atom (Astroboy) and Jungle Emperor (Kimba, the White Lion...which is what The Lion King was derived from). Otomo is another great anime filmmaker (Akira).

BurnetRhoades

It ended at the beginning. The last episode explains the reason for the match set up in the first episode. It did that beautifully. Not only that, it brings extra gravity to our one-armed swordsman.

I've read online that Saigen cut it off in a match occurring only in the manga, which would place it sometime between ep.12 and it's wrap-around to ep. 1 which is fine in and of itself. This would fit just fine in the circular narrative that's been created but, putting the manga aside, it's equally cool to theorize that Fujiki cut his own arm off, forcing his body (back mostly) to over-compensate and further strengthen and develop the Kogan style, which is a one-handed style to begin with.

He would definitely be a worthy successor to the style becoming the strongest, most specialized practitioner, exceeding the capabilities of all two-armed samurai using the one-hand style. Anyway, that's my theory. Either way, they've basically devoted themselves entirely to beating/killing the other and have been at it for some time.

Brings to mind certain aspects of Ridley Scott's first feature, The Duelists.

edit: also, it's only after you've seen ep.12 that the words of Mie to Fujiki in ep.1 really have serious, harsh meaning. She's not just talking schmack!

...surprisingly awesome.

edit: Don't be immediately dismissive thinking this show is either "old" or "childish". This series isn't a year old and is basically the anime equivalent to the resurge in interest for "grindhouse" cinema here in the West. It's a new show based on the style of a 1970s show, made with modern tools and techniques impossible for the original era while retaining its charm. It's a Go Nagai series, one of the most important names in manga and anime whose influence and impact on the art form and industry means his name stands next to names like Tezuka, Miyazaki, Toei and Tatsunoko.

This return to retro style, told with techniques impossible for their original era, can be seen in other shows like Casshern Sins. That short "Comedy" I posted earlier, someone who doesn't actually know much about animation would look at it and see something that looks old but it isn't at all.

Not a Go Nagai fan, eh? That's rather odd.

Watching "B Gata H Kei". Romantic comedy about a naive teenage girl who thinks she's ready to lose her virginity, but she has no idea how to hook up with a guy.

Burnet has awful taste in Anime and film :dislike:

That's exactly the kind of lowest-common-denominator, unenlightened comment I'd expect from someone like steelbaz who confuses his opinions for "taste".

Tough talk from a guy who consistently over glorifies mediocrity.

LOL.

Your irony just kills me sometimes. Stick to your AMVs of mainstream, post-Suncoast anime awareness. Your choices are obvious, predictable and without any understanding of the industry, the craft, the artists, their history, technique or technology.

Yes because I appreciate modern Anime
Older Anime just isn't very enjoyable for me, and many others. The fact that you like them, and shun the current product, doesn't make you any better than the rest of the anime fans.. Although you believe it does. You are just pretentious.

Angel Cop and Akira were good 80's Anime, I like Twilight of the Dark Master, Bio Hunter, GITS, and tons of other anime you've never even heard of.

OMG, you should really just stop talking because you're perception has gone from cute in an almost endearing, ignorant way to just annoyingly stupid. You sound like those hipster kids that talk about The Beach Boys and Pink Floyd like they're somehow obscure or esoteric. You're a Johnny-come-lately that wouldn't even know about anime if it weren't for people like me who were enjoying it pre-internet, pre-Western licensing companies, pre mainstreamed down to product found at the local Piggley-Wiggley.

Shun modern anime. That's retarded. I used to sorta care to get along with you but if you're going to continuously play the obnoxious mongo card and say stupid shit I'll continue to oblige you with equal respect.

Know this: your comments, both here and about film in general, are as transparent to me as if I were to decide you and the folks that read the UFC/MMA threads needed my $.02 input on goings on there. I've got enough self-awareness to know I wouldn't be contributing anything insightful so I spare you the frustration and hilarity.

Maybe you should do everyone else the same favor?

It's good. The horror, story and tone are so well done that the mild hentai aspects of it seem out of place at times but this likely just comes down to more of a cultural thing. If you liked this director's take on Jubei (Ninja Scroll) you're bound to like this too, though it is a bit slower at times.

I've wanted to investigate whether similarities between this and Alien Nation are purely coincidental or if the latter was at least partially inspired. Just haven't gotten around to it yet.
