If you think Frank Castle became the Punisher when his wife and two kids were gunned down, you are wrong! Written by the ultimate Punisher muse, Garth Ennis, this story shows you the true origin of Frank Castle as the gun-toting vigilante we all know and love. It's 1971, Captain Castle's third tour in Vietnam, and the war is dwindling to an end. But Frank Castle is a man who loves the war and doesn't want it to end. It's all he really wants anymore. He breathes war, he eats war, he dreams war.

The story is told through the eyes of a young marine named Stevie Goodwin. A man who has 30+ days left on his first tour and all he wants to do is leave. They are stationed on Valley Forge, a base that has half it's men addicted heroin. With this devilish crew, Castle kills his own men who feels need to be punished. Frank is dealing with an internal voice that tells him that killing is what he truly loves, and he can have a war that never ends and be an ultimate killing machine. But there will have to be a huge sacrifice. It is only till Frank is surrounded by the Veit Cong that he finally succumbs to the voice in what has to be one of the best moments in the character's history.

If you're a Punisher fan, you've got to read this story. And if you're only slightly interested in the character, you've still got to read it. It'll make you fall in love Castle. Published under Marvel's MAX line, it's incredibly violent, vulgar, and disturbing. The way all Punisher stories should be.
