The director of 'Pan's Labyrinth' and the upcoming 'HOBBIT' picture has written a new vampire novel called 'THE STRAIN'.It promises to be the first in an epic trilogy and will be released in the UK 8th June.
It's co-written with CHUCK HOGAN,and SFX magazine ran the first of a 2 part interview with Del Toro in the new issue out today.
Nothing on the story in this issue, but the 2nd part of the interview promises to give us more on the way he has re-written the Vampire mythos.
I look forward to reading this.

Not 100% sure, but I think it would be best for you to try and look on Del Toro's site. They should have a release date on there. If not try and order it from one of the local Philly bookstores dude! Sorry I can't be of better help.

here is talking about it, its the same video you can view if you look up the book on amazon.com. After hearing what he has to say I'm very excited about it. He said he loves a scary vampire story, not the romantic "young guy sucking on a beautiful womans neck" crap. That made me happy. I've been dying for some violent sadistic vampires. I can't wait to read this.

I hear ya Chief...

That's why I liked the Necroscope series by Brian Lumley so much... it was a new and interesting take on the Vampire and the Wamphyri were certainly not artsy fartsy romantic vampires by any stretch of the imagination... evil, nasty, twisted, hateful sadistic fuckers...

I hope this new series by Toro delivers the same.

He said in a local radio interview his book will detail the physical and medical questions of the change from human to vampire and describes it as a disease much like Blade 2. Sounds Cool.

It's EXACTLY like the reaper Vampires from Blade 2. It's a pretty gripping book.To begin with I was getting a little bored,as nothing really happens for the first half of the book, then it REALLY goes off. 9/10 from me.I cannot wait for the 2nd and 3rd books! Also I heard that a movie is in the works. But Del Toro wants it to be a tv series so they can flesh out the ideas a little better.

Holy CRAP this book is great so far. I've read about 140 pages in a day. This thing is hard to put down. Theres really not hardly any vamp stuff for the first half of the book, but its so good you don't even care. But the fact this is going to be 3 books long. Its good to see there not rushing into stuff. The forensics of it is very interesting. Explaining every little detail pretty much of these things. Going from human to monster. And the atmosphere is GREAT. This book is actually creepy as hell. Thanks to Hogan and Del Toro vampires are actually scary again. The main vamp (im asssuming anyway) Sardu? He doesn't have a Dracula feel to him. He has a Nosferatu feel. And I love that!!
