Ex-Student Says NJ Medical School Discriminated

MOUNT LAUREL, N.J. (AP) -- A former student claims in a lawsuit that the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey discriminated against him for the way he described his background in classroom discussions on cultural diversity.

Paulo Serodio said that in 2006, he told a professor and classmates that he was ``white, African, American,'' which he says accurately reflects the fact that he was born in Mozambique but later became a U.S. citizen.

He said some classmates and staff members at New Jersey Medical School found it offensive that a Caucasian man would call himself ``African-American'' and that the fallout led to harassment and eventually his suspension from the school.

Serodio, who lives in Newark, said some school employees and students told him not to describe himself as ``African-American.'' In the aftermath of his comments, Serodio said, flyers were hung around the school mocking him, he was assaulted and his car was vandalized.

His lawyer, Gregg Zeff, said Serodio eventually was suspended for ``conduct unbecoming'' a student.

The suspension came directly from his remarks in class, Zeff said.

Serodio filed the lawsuit in U.S. District Court in Newark on Monday. He is seeking damages from the university and several faculty members and administrators.

University spokesman Jeffrey Tolvin said he could not comment because the university had not seen the lawsuit.

I think he walked into this classroom with an agenda knowing full well that making such a statement was going to get some sort of reaction. But now he wants money? Its too damn easy to sue in this country the way I see it this kid shouldn't get one red cent from the school. He a donkey for making that stand; learn to pick your battles because that one isn't worth the heat.

He may be technically correct but he doesn't have to throw the title around because when I hear African American I don't think "White Guy from Mozambique" for that matter he has lived here long enough to become a U.S. Citizen, he knew full well what he was saying in that classroom and it doesn't seem right to me that he should get paid for being a jackass.

The entire "African American" issue has always been a foolish venture. Haiti, Brazil?

Don't forget the beta-test of "African American." Afro-American.

For a while the acceptable adjective seemed to be changing every few years. This is the fruit of such stupidity. A new word for "the skin tone formerly known as black" which excludes others of the same skin tone and includes other skin tones. And yes -- this is about skin tones. If it was not about skin tones then the not-so-dark person calling himself an African American would not have endured what he went trhough.

I'd like to see the civil rights leaders who pushed for the term African-American speak up about this case.

I would like to see Al Sharpton or the Rainbow Coalition come to his defense.

I think he should get some money from the school, because technically he is right. He has a sound reason to say he's African American. BUT, like Sutter said, he should have known there was going to be problems. I'd say his ass kicking and vandaled car were side effects that he should have just expected.

Is she literally taller in height when she's in South Africa?

:D

Anyway, to stay on topic. I'm not one to care about these things at all, and I don't really know what it is that makes it right for someone to call themselves "African-American". Is it being black, or being from the country? I personally think the latter seems to be the right thing there, therefor the guy does have a case. However, the whole case is ridiculous to begin with though, he should've just skipped that part, and the school should just have let his slip go cause who the fuck really cares? Does it matter?

Why should he have expected problems of this extreme nature? Logically, I can't see ANY reason why someone should expect problems for saying they are African-American, unless they're lying.

I think the way the students and the school handled it is utterly ridiculous. I'm not a sue-happy person but I do think the guy should get reimbursed for the damages done to his car and school transcript.

To be harassed for being a white African-American... :dsp:

This kid walked into the classroom with the intent to make a disruption. Is it really a shocker that a white kid calling himself African American was ill-received? That term is PC code for black man/woman. He went in there and decided to make it all about himself. This is typical of a society that rewards people for talking out of their ass, this case should end with an apology from the student.

Yeah, yeah it is. First off, the 'new' PC term is "People of Color." Second, just because a group of people attach meaning to a word doesn't mean it obliterates all other meaning for that word.

I think you're reading way too many details into an article that is sorely lacking.
