It's Bloody Disgusting so take it with that in mind.

has been a year and a half since we broke the news exclusively here on B-D - and about a year since THR confirmed (without credit of course) - that Ruairi Robinson would be making his directorial debut on the live-action adaptation of Akira, a massive two-part apocalypse story that was being produced by Leonardo DiCaprio's Appian Way and Warner Bros. Pictures. Sad news comes in this weekend as we have learned that not only has Robinson left the project, but Tetsuo and Kaneda's adventure is "dead as a doornail," a report we've confirmed with two separate sources. I can only hope it gets revived in the near future as this could have been one of the coolest effin' movies ever.

"Akira" originated in 1988 as a manga and then as an animated film co-written and directed by Katsuhiro Otomo. The story was set in a neon-lit futuristic post-nuclear war "New Tokyo" in 2019 where a teen biker gang member is subjected to a government experiment which unleashes his latent powers. The gang's leader must find a way to stop the ensuing swathe of destruction.

With its mature themes and cutting-edge animation, "Akira" was a milestone movie in anime and even animation circles, and led the way for anime making inroads into Western pop culture in the 1990s.

The new story was to move the action to "New Manhattan," a city rebuilt by Japanese money and was to hit theaters THIS summer.

"Akira" would have marked the feature directorial debut for Robinson who was nominated for a best animated short Oscar in 2001 for a sci-fi comedy called "Fifty Percent Grey." He also wrote and directed a sci-fi short titled "The Silent City" (watch it at BDTV), Robinson is repped by CAA and 3 Arts Entertainment.

If this is true, then I think potential for a good Anime adaption is now gone. It could of worked, although it could of not and judging by the god awful Dragonball adaption, maybe it's for the better.

I don't think there will ever be such a thing as a good anime adaptation...I duppose though that there would first have to be a good anime to begin with hahahaha I kid, I kid. But really, anime adaptations are a bad idea.

Well, it's not dead afterall.

Back in June, it was reported that director Ruairi Robinson had left the live action adaptation of Akira, and that the project was dead. Collider.com is now reporting that Mark Fergus and Hawk Ostby (Iron Man, Children of Men) are about to submit a script. The project has been kept secret as they have been working on getting the script "just right". If Warner Bros. likes the script, they could go into production next year for a 2011 release.

I'd like to see what they come up with, just for shits and giggles. The same reason I wanna see Dragonball: Evolution.

A live action Akira would be a financial disaster for any studio making it. Too expensive to produce for a niche audience.

Vulture has learned that Warner Bros. is negotiating to reteam with The Book of Eli's Hughes brothers to have them direct a live-action remake of the cult favorite Akira, from a script by Iron Man scribes Mark Fergus and Hawk Ostby.

Uh....the Death Note films?

That's exactly what I was thinking. 'L' Save the World was really good too and what I've seen of Blood:the Last Vampire was nice looking. Dunno if it all totally worked though, I'll have to watch it again from beginning to end.

It would totally depend on the story, since anime isn't a genre but encompasses all genres. What doesn't work is something like Fist of the North Star, where you have all these gaijin running around with Japanese names. There are plenty of anime stories that would make for fantastic live action though.

For instance, a title like Gantz would translate very well to live action scifi/horror. It would be like a more interesting, action-packed Cube. Nothing in the setting or culture that couldn't be transplanted to a Western setting, keeping the essence of the story intact while giving it a new flavor, ala Fistful of Dollars.

Something like Dragonball though...they were idiots to even try. A Western version of Bleach wouldn't work either. I can't imagine them being anything better than an expensive The Last Dragon. Akira could have been done but they'd have to change all the names. All of the more fantastic or thematic elements to the story have already been done in various live action films, before and after its creation.

The problem really comes down to marketing and the corporate money that would be necessary to do some of these. Convincing the studio to spend $100+ million dollars after removing whatever name recognition they're banking on for a built in audience, turning it into something even more risky than banking on anime fans to fill theatres...that's a hard sell.

edit: and by "Western" I don't mean cowboys of course.

You do realize there is a live action Gantz out already :stare:

I didn't. Is it Japanese though? I was mainly thinking in the context of the title being licensed to be done by an American/Canadian/European studio similarly to the now defunct Akira-LA project.

Japanese filmmakers have been doing lousy adaptations of their own anime for quite some time. Ever see the Golgo 13 movie starring Sonny Chiba? P-U. Then you have the silly HK live-action version of Wicked City. Casshern was a good attempt though. It's taken a decade for any non-Asian director to produce anything as outrageous and ballsy, visually (Sucker-Punch)
