View Full Version : UHM 2.0 Updates Thread

FrighT MasteR

I decided to make a separate thread just to keep members informed of the goings-on with the new site instead of just replying to the beta thread (To view links or images in this forum your post count must be 5 or greater. You currently have 0 posts.). If you want the link to the new site and some questions answered, go to the beta thread (To view links or images in this forum your post count must be 5 or greater. You currently have 0 posts.), otherwise read on for changes the status of the new site.

Some of the below has already been addressed in the beta thread (To view links or images in this forum your post count must be 5 or greater. You currently have 0 posts.), but I'm reposting it for those who didn't catch it before.

Member Profiles

Right now I'm working on tweaking the look of the user profiles in the new site. Yes, you need to register there if you want to take advantage of some of the cool new features of the site, and no, you won't have to re-register to the board, because the site and board will be on two separate accounts.

Rating Movies

Unlike the current site, the new UHM will not let users rate on upcoming films. This is to prevent false ratings on films that have yet been released and makes things a bit more fair for the movie itself. Members will only be able to rate movies that have been released and only on a review page, regardless of whether there's a review for the movie or not. More on this here (To view links or images in this forum your post count must be 5 or greater. You currently have 0 posts.).

Movie Database

I'm currently in the process of adding the more popular upcoming flicks to the database before the less popular ones. It will definitely take a while since some of the popular ones come with a lot of content, which take a while to add.

Review Database

The reviews take a lower priority than the movies in the database, so it's likely that by the time the site is open to the public there will still be a crapload of reviews I will add over time. This is especially the case considering I have well over 800 reviews to add, not including the ones from Slasherpool :stare:

Movies That Never Happened

This section will be one of the last areas of the site that will migrate over to the new UHM. It has even lower priority than the reviews since it's not a popular section, but it's a cool and necessary section for the page, so it will go up eventually.

UHM Schedule

I'm gonna have a cool calendar feature for the UHM schedule, where you see what movies are released during a particular month in a calendar format. This is a side-project that I will work on periodically and will probably not be released until sometime after the new site is up.

The New Site's Release Date

I originally wanted to have the site done by the 10th anniversary on the 24th of this month, but I'm afraid that I'm a bit behind schedule. It's understandable since I had to learn everything from scratch, and only have a couple months to do everything. I'm hoping to have the site ready to go sometime in the early parts of July :whew:

You can check on the new site periodically to see changes occur. Feel free to register and comment on films that are already in the database. :thumbup3:

Added some cool new features this morning:

Friend's List

Registered members now have the ability to add other members into a "Friend's List" to see when or if they're online.

Private Messaging

PMing other members is now available for the new site. :thumbup3:

Profiles/Comments

I've also fixed up the look of profiles and comments a little. I wouldn't advise editing your profile information just yet, as there seems to be an issue where when I clear the system's cache it removes that info and you have to re-enter it.

Keep in mind that these new features are really nothing compared to the look and usage of the ones available here on the board. I only decided to have those options for UHM members who would rather simply be registered to the site and not have to register to the board.

Added a couple small new features earlier:

User Statuses

Users are now able to change their custom status that will be displayed under their username in their profiles and comments. There's a similar feature like this on the board.

Vote For Anticipated Flicks

If you're really looking forward to an upcoming movie, users are now able to "vote" on it and it will then be displayed in a top 10 "Most Anticipated Movies" list. This will hopefully pinpoint the most fan-favorite film in the database, and will be much more effective than a simple "Most Viewed" movies listing :thumbup3:

That's all for now and this may be one of the last mods I add to the new site. If all goes well I can officially start adding flicks to the new database and hopefully have the site ready to go live within a week-or-so :whew:

Just added a feature to view other users "Most Anticipated Movies". It's a cool little feature just to see if another person is looking forward to good or crap flicks and you can decide if you wanna be-friend them or not :shifty:

Currently I generally remove links to movies within the database once the film is released in theaters, DVD, or on-demand, but I was originally going to leave them in the database for the new site.

I've decided that it's probably best that I don't do that anymore, to in sure that the database won't be cluttered with too many films that haven't been released on top of ones that already have.

Basically what's going to happen is after a movie is released on VOD or DVD, it will be removed from the initial movie database and a review page will be created for it, regardless on whether anyone from the staff has reviewed it or not. Why? So users can review it themselves via the voting and commenting feature. This way there will always be a "review" for a movie whether there is one from us or not.

This technique will also make sure that movies just don't drop from the site entirely, because I list a lot of movies in the database, but once they are released and there is no review for it, it basically disappears from the site and can only be accessed through searches (due to the page remaining on the site's server).

Most Hated Movies

Users are now able to vote on the movies they DON'T want to see as opposed to the ones they're really looking forward to. The results will then be sent to a Top 50 Most Hated Movies listing, with the most hated at the very top with the most votes. Now lets all vote on Saw VI to get things started :D

Well, I was originally going to shut down the site over the weekend and debut the new site this Monday, but I decided to delay it another week to give me time to add more films to the database. Right now I only have about 90 movies and 50 reviews -- definitely not enough to debut with. By next week I should have doubled that amount (hopefully).

Worst Rated Movies

Aside from a Top Rated Movies, I've also added a Worst Rated Movies, which obviously lists films that have received ratings of 3 and under. This should be a nice list for people who may want to avoid certain flicks.

Underrated Films

Since a lot of readers seem to miss the gems from the 80's I've added an Underrated Films category within the reviews. This and Giallo Flicks (steelbaz primary category) are two new review areas for the site.

Complete Categories List

Here's a list of all the categories that will be featured on the new site. Most are already available, but there are a few new ones. This'll give you an idea on how I'm working on making the site offer easier alternatives to find exactly what you want.

Dead Projects
Foreign Films
Fantasy
Sequels
Prequels
Remakes
Misc
Comedy
Killers
Demons
Werewolves
Vampires
Zombies
Supernatural

Other categories I considered adding were Action, Sci-Fi, and Animals. I decided against them since there aren't enough for any of the three sub-genres, plus they could all easily fit under Misc. anyway, which is why I created that category to begin with.

That's all for now. This may be the last update I make note on before the site goes live, but we'll see how the week goes. Ideas usually come to me randomly, so I may come up with another interesting option for the site later, but for now I think everything is good :thumbup3:

Well I just thought up another idea, which actually isn't anything new. It's something I've wanted to implement for a while and I'm always emailed about this feature as well...

Available Now

As if you couldn't already guess, this new category for the movies in the database will feature films that are already released. The films listed here will ONLY be movies that were in the upcoming movies database. Once they are in theaters, DVD, or video-on-demand they will be moved to Available Now section of the site.

From that section you will be available to view everything on the movie as you would have when it was still upcoming (I.E. pics, trailers, general information). The only difference is that comments will be disabled, because the review page for that particular film will be opened, which will contain all the new comments/user reviews for the movie. This way you won't have two separate pages full of different comments on one movie, like what is going on now :thumbup3:

I'm fairly confident that UHM 2.0 will go live sometime this week. Although I don't have as many movies and reviews in the database as I wanted, I feel that there's a decent amount now to go public with. I will be continuously adding movies as the weeks go on anyway, regardless of whether the site is live or not.

Either way, the move has to happen soon, because I need to test and make sure everything will run smoothly after it switches from Beta to Public. Since it's a big change, glitches and errors may occur, so it's best to take care of them ASAP and not waste any more time adding movies.

If you run into a "Maintenance Page" while visiting UHM, you'll know that the site has moved from the Beta stage, but is not yet active to the general public. I estimate that the site should go live a couple days after the Maintenance Page pops up (assuming I don't run into any issues).

The board will remain active and unaffected since its separate from the new site, and there will be a link to the message board on the Maintenance Page for those who want to access the board without having to bookmark it. :whew:
