Just as good as the drama of a good post-apocalyptic story are strange scifi stories where people get cut off from the rest of the world and have to cope with the ramifications. Enter Stephen King's upcoming novel, one that he's been working on since the early 80s but just couldn't lick. It's called "Under the Dome" it sounds too amazing not to report on. The official synopsis was just released on his official website last month to little fan fare so I thought I'd share it with you all here.

On an entirely normal, beautiful fall day in Chester’s Mills, Maine, the town is inexplicably and suddenly sealed off from the rest of the world by an invisible force field. Planes crash into it and fall from the sky in flaming wreckage, a gardener’s hand is severed as "the dome" comes down on it, people running errands in the neighboring town are divided from their families, and cars explode on impact. No one can fathom what this barrier is, where it came from, and when—or if—it will go away.

Dale Barbara, Iraq vet and now a short-order cook, finds himself teamed with a few intrepid citizens—town newspaper owner Julia Shumway, a physician’s assistant at the hospital, a select-woman, and three brave kids. Against them stands Big Jim Rennie, a politician who will stop at nothing—even murder—to hold the reins of power, and his son, who is keeping a horrible secret in a dark pantry. But their main adversary is the Dome itself. Because time isn’t just short. It’s running out.

The novel supposedly weighs in at over 1000 pages long and has over 100 characters (or so I've read) so expect another epic in the vein of the "The Stand." Pretty cool no?

Sounds sweet! Nov of this year.

:yes:This sounds incredible. I've been reading King since I was 10. I've literally read everything he's had published.
This is going to be epic I can tell.
Long live the King.

I have read a LOT of King's stuff over the years and I've come to the conclusion that he can tell a tale and tell it well, but the mother fucker can NOT end a story for shit..

90% of his books I enjoy all the way up to the end and then I'm like "WHAT THE FUCK!!!"

That being said, I'll probably end up reading this book, simply because it's King and King makes for good reading whilst I'm taking a shit...

The apocalypse again?
My thought as well, especially with it clocking in at 1,000+ pages.

I'm not intimidated by long books, but you damn well better have something to say if you're taking that long to do it. Otherwise, it's just masturbation.

(By way of contrast, I'm currently reading the final "Bachman Book," Blaze which is not only engaging, but well-paced and is a brisk 285 pages, hardcover).

1000 pages seem too long but it will definitely be interesting in terms of involving so much characters.

I've read quite a few King Novels/novellas, and I haven't found any of his material as goos as his older stuff.........it's almost like reading a Goosebumps novel

Started reading it the other day. Less than 100 pages in and it's pretty captivating. However, I think it's going to get confusing. Before the story starts there is a map of the town and Maine area for reference, as well as a table of contents of major characters and who they are.

I like the bachman books, especially the Long Walk and The Running Man. They're short, exciting and to the point.

Can't get into King. 1,000 Pages??? He's probably gonna talk for half of it about the weather, and what people are wearing and other boring crap that will make you fall asleep. Atleast thats the Reason I dont like King to begin with and its probably whats gonna go on here considering the book is so long.

1000 pages is pretentious.

About 3 quarters through and it's still pretty good in my opinion. Especially since Cell is the only other book of he's I've liked in the past decade.

Finally finished it. Was gonna write a review but, meh. 7/10. Good book, not as confusing as I expected it was going to be. Fun characters, though some of the things that happened in the book were hard to swallow.

Wanna just know what the fuck the Dome is?

I'll say.

Beware... though you've probably heard the story before. This is just King's own take on it.

SPOILER: Alien kids looking at humans like ants in a jar basically. Nothing more, nothing less.

i just finished the book this weekend and i agree with this guy here. He's great at building characters...usually ensemble but his ending just isn't satisfying for some reason. Under The Dome remind me of his other book Storm of the Century.

I've wanted to read this since the first time I saw it. It reminds me of a movie I saw when I was a kid. These people make an emergency landing in this little town at night, and can't find anyone to talk to. In the morning, they find all the residents of the town walking around in a trance, doing the same things over and over again. They try to leave, but find an invisible dome all around the town. Every once in a while, a bright light envelopes someone and they are sucked up into the sky. You never find out whats going on, but eventually the newcomers dig under the edge of the dome and escape. Never been able to find out what the title was.

Brian Keene wrote something similar, about a town being cut off, called "Darkness on the Edge of Town". Really enjoyed it.
