need help with a movie

ok so i remember this movie from maybe late 80's-early 90's and i think it was a group of kids younger and they had a freaky tree house or clubhouse or something and it was haunted or was the door to hell or something wierd anyway there were all these crazy visuals in the treehouse and there was like a part where the walls are like checker board and a hand and a face raise up out of the wall i dont remeber much but if its sounds familiar to anyone let me know cause i kinda wanna watch it again if i remember more about the movie i will post it

with the time clue of the 80's-90's it kinda sounds like this movie called "the Gate".
I think it was made in 1987. The plot concerns these kids (like 10-13yrs. old) who find a sort of stone in a huge crater. Which turns out to they take it home release all sorts of hell on earth. There are some funny sounding little demons who get into everything.
