Cheerleading Most Dangerous Female Sport in U.S.

Friday, June 26, 2009

Cheerleading safety efforts have led to modest reductions in the number of serious injuries in recent years, according to a new report about college and high school sports and cheerleading mishaps.

But cheerleading continues to cause more serious and deadly injuries by far than other female sports.

Researchers have long known how dangerous cheerleading is, but records were poorly kept until recently.

An update to the record-keeping system last year found that between 1982 and 2007, there were 103 fatal, disabling or serious injuries recorded among female high school athletes, with the vast majority (67) occurring in cheerleading.

The next most dangerous sports: gymnastics (nine such injuries) and track (seven).

Today, the National Center for Catastrophic Sports Injury Research at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill released its 26th annual report on the topic. The latest figures are from the 2007-2008 academic year for college and high school sports, male and female. The report defines catastrophic injuries as any severe or fatal injury incurred during participation in the sport.

The new numbers are for the 26-year period from the fall of 1982 through the spring of 2008:

The number of cheerleading injuries fell slightly in the 2007-08 academic year.

"Progress has been slow, but there has been an increased emphasis on cheerleading safety," said the study's author Frederick O. Mueller. "Continued data collection on all types of cheerleading injuries will hopefully show that these safety measures are working to reduce injuries."

Here is my Question. What is a sport? Because I don't consider Cheerleading to be a sport but colleges do give out scholarships for it. Also, I don't think golf is sport although it does require athletic skill, As well as Track and Field. To be a sport it requires two things.

1. Seasons, standings or rankings.
2. An offense and a defense

I think most of the X-games are out the window; looks cool but not real sports.

:hmmm:

a sport to me requires athleticism. a sport dont have to have a offense/defense.

Well if I Google the word sport I get:

an active diversion requiring physical exertion and competition

So as long as there's physical exertion and there are competitions held for it. It's a sport.

From dictionary.com

an athletic activity requiring skill or physical prowess and often of a competitive nature, as racing, baseball, tennis, golf, bowling, wrestling, boxing, hunting, fishing, etc.

There you go.

So is poker a sport? no offense or defense but no athletic requirements either and yet its on ESPN.

Someone should stop you from scoring: Baseball, Hockey, Soccer, Football are all sports.

Bowling, Billards, and Darts; Not sports. And although there are competitions for it Cheerleading isn't a sport

I was thinking the exact same as you on the poker thing. They show it on ESPN, but I don't consider it anywhere near a sport. Sure, there's some pretty heavy competition in it, but just because there's some competition, doesn't mean it's a sport.

I'm going to go with what people above said, involves some form of competition and physical activity.

Swimming: Unless someone is trying to swim in the opposite direction in the same lane and you have to stop each other from reaching the other side; its not a sport.

If swimming is a sport so is Nascar; The only difference is the pool. Otherwise there are lanes, laps and the fastest time wins. Not a sport IMO.

I don't believe so because in NASCAR, you just sit on your ass and drive a car.

In swimming, you're exerting physical energy. You must be athletic to swim.

Bowling's not a sport? Fuck y'all! It's the official sport of lazy beer drinkers like me.

Bowling and swimming are fun activities that require practice and skill but they are in no way sports, again no offense/defense or seasons (both can be done all year round). Also hunting and fishing are not sports. they are survival skills.

Now Rugby is def. a sport.

According to dictionary.com, a sport doesn't need to have an offense/defense or seasons to be labeled under the category of being a sport.

I don't believe hunting and fishing are sports either. Those are definitely survival skills.

Everything listed is a sport with the exception of maybe nascar,I guess a person could argue that it's a team sport though.

Dictionaries are written by people who don't play sports. I doubt they should be held as the final authority on the subject. The original post was referring to a study that said Cheerleading is the most dangerous sport for girls and women. It is dangerous as hell I will give you that but I contend its not a sport; just an activity that runs concurrent to a real sport like football or basketball. So by the Dictionary.Com  definition Cheerleading is a sport. I detest that as an accurate statement however, there are more things that are called "sports" when they clearly are not.

BMX, Skateboarding, Snowboarding, Skiing, Golf - Fun athletic activities that require practice and skill but not sports.

There must be an opponent who can affect your chance to score points.

Boxing, Wrestling, MMA, tennis and anything that ends with "ball" obviously a sport.

I got into this arguement with a friend cause I said... why dont you play any sports. He replied I do... I play painball, weightlift.... and i stopped him and said. Those are activities, not sport.

My definition of a sport is trying to achieve a goal, while someone tries to stop you from that goal. i.e Baseball, basketball, Hockey, Football, and Soccer.

But weightlifting? c'mon thats a gym activity.

Of course there is offensive/defensive strategy for bowling... "Hey Bill! Yer dick's out and everyone's laughing at you!" "What?!" *gutterball* "SHIT!"....

Paintball is kind of on the fence. Don't know if that's an activity or sport but Weightlifting is def not a sport. Neither is Cycling. The Tour de France is a glorified bike ride. Now if the riders could push each other over or had melee weapons that would be different. :axekill:

ESPN doesn't want to cover MMA but put Magic: The Gathering tournaments on the air... This is why the Chinese tanks will be rolling down Main St. in the near future.

Fuck ESPN.
