Gungrave is one of my fav. animes and it looks like it may be getting the live-action treatment. According to Variety (http://www.variety.com/article/VR1118006317.html?categoryid=13&cs=1)Convergence Entertainment is looking to produce the film in the in the $30 million-$35 million range, with Yasuaki Nagoshi from Red Entertainment exec-producing.

"Gungrave," owned by Red Entertainment and created by Japanese manga author Yasuhiro Nightow, centers on a lone figure who rises in the ranks of a crime syndicate only to be murdered by his best friend and then resurrected as a harbinger of death who exacts revenge on those that wronged him. "Gungrave" was the basis of a 26-episode animated series produced by Madhouse, and two incarnations of the game were released on Sony PlayStation.

The anime itself mostly just follows two best friends as they go from petty criminals to hitmen for the mob. Pretty cool stuff, and the series takes an interesting turn later on when the friend, who was once thought to be dead, is resurrected in a new ass-kickin' form, where he takes on specially-skilled hitmen and monsters created by the mafia syndicate.

My guess is that the live-action feature will probably not feature much the supernatural and monster-aspects of the anime and mostly just focus on the mafia-and-revenge aspect. Either way, hopefully it'll be good, but we'll see who they decide to write the script and go behind the camera. :whew:

Anime adaptions should be left to Japan, yeah so their cgi isn't as uniquely wonderful as some say it is, but it tells me it's more about the character and story than just neato effects.

American adaptions ruin nearly almost everything.

There have been some first-rate Japanese live-action adaptations of anime (or manga, for that matter): Boogiepop, Death Note etc etc. Western versions are another matter, though. I enjoyed the Blood: The Last Vampire movie, so there is hope for this one...

However, I think it's worth noting that Speed Racer and Dragonball were both crap and predominantly US-made; Blood was a French movie, which possibly explains its quality. Not to diss Hollywood, but France is currently well ahead of it in the action/horror stakes.

Well, you're not the only one. I enjoyed it myself, but then I'm not hard to please... ;)

I found Speed Racer to be pretty good. Hated Dragonball, but Speed Racer was done right from it's adaption. Some people might disagree with all the CGI effects and usage of so much color and cartoony feel of it, but I felt like I was watching an anime in live-action.

I surprisingly dug Speed Racer, good popcorn flick, especially on Blu-Ray.

Speed Racer was by far too campy for my taste than how I loved it in the anime. I always loved waking up early in the morning to watch Speed before I go to school. I loved how they made it serious with the cars exploding and terrifying danger and fighting between characters.

But once this movie came out and I wasted money to see it, all of that was taken out. Sure there's fighting, but it's not taken into emotional effect or anywhere seriously for that matter. The Matrix-Bros. didn't really have much heart on the source material and really made a campy POS adaption, and I even now have lost my fandom within them because they allowed the guys to slap a monkey behind the scenes.

Monkeys are people too. The Matrix 2 & 3 were garbage, and so was V for Vendetta. Screw those guys, I'd rather each my own arm off.

But yeah, I wouldn't CGI the crap out of this.
