DISTRICT 9 (2009)
Starring: Sharlto Copley, Vanessa Haywood, Eugene Khumbanyiwa, Prawns (the aliens).
Directed by: Neill Blomkamp
Written by: Neill Blomkamp & Terri Tatchell
After thinking there would be no hope for a good movie future, I had suddenly encountered that District 9 here is actually an original concept that is a terrific acception to the Sci-Fi genre. I kept seeing reviews that the story was great and nicely original eventhough it was inspired by Alien Nation, characters were breath-taking, the effects were incredible and realistic than they've ever seen before, the CGI was used to make it into a good character, it drove my mind wild to hear that people loved it. And so, on that note, late last night, I paid for a ticket and watched.
Beware of possible spoilers, but I just have to tell you how incredible this movie is, that beats the shit out of T3, T4, Alien sequels, Predator sequels, and any laughable sci-fi flicks you've seen, because District 9 doesn't bullshit.
The film takes place in South Africa, after 30 years ago a UFO had come to Earth, the humans all have expected a holocaust, but it never came to them, but instead came these interesting aliens that they called "Prawns" because of their complexions, who were actually refugees that were the last remaining survivors from their home planet. They were put into South Africa to live in that was called "District 9" so that the nations across the globe would know what to do with them. The Prawns just seemed like a descent race of beings that didn't want to attack the humans because there was nothing going on between. They have a deep interest in garbage, egg reproduction, cow meat, and "cat food", oh how they craved that cat food.
Overtime the Prawns were treated as pathetic outcasts, a new ring tossed into the racism cone, bizzare African drug dealers, gangsters, and ritual freaks killing them off and eating the Prawns for their energy in the blood, saying it can cure diabetes and other diseases. But what was more to humanity's interest was the highly advanced weaponry created by the Prawns, and the mobile suit gundam-like machines they used for battle.
After a while of this mass chaos, the Multi-National United (MNU), a united military organization and a Prawn experiment facility, had lost its patients and has decided to take on the alien lifeforms and find out how to use their weaponry and gain their ever growing power. Though the experiment failed, because the Prawns weapons can only work and be activated by Prawn DNA, so it was useless to the humans.
I would love to tell you more, but it would spoil everything, it's worth every penny you should go and see it now!
Now for my thoughts.
District 9 was the best Sci-Fi film I've seen in years, the documentary part of it made me a bit tipsy but it was still interesting, and throughout after ten minutes of that the movie moves on to a big build up, tear-jerking, and phenominal story about a man and three Prawns. I thought the acting at times was only a pinch tipsy, but I thought it was just brilliant how the main protagonist turns from an arrogant and cowardly bastard and into an acceptable and cool character and how he must live with himself in the situation he's put himself through.
The effects and gore was to die for in a sci-fi flick, when you get to see the Prawns use the "Don't Fuck With Me" weapons it's like one shot and you instantly pop like a balloon, fanfuckingtastic, i adored and ate the gore with love in every grasp and taste. It was just amazing how the CGI became realistic with the Prawns and just how they move, and they all talk in a different language through out and those are subtitled, but you could still feel the character within them and that's what made me love the movie so much, they were very different but you could still interact with them. It wasen't a battle ground about awesome cool effects, what Blomkamp was doing was telling a story through all of this cool factor and I have to agree that it pulled off completely nicely.
The story I thought was great, it tells a back story of the Prawns and then makes a new one as it slowly progresses, which is a good slow. I shead some tears in some parts because it was deeply sad what they were doing with the Prawns, and how much you could bitterly hate and dispise humanity for its cruelties and seeing that in reality humans live only to kill each other's species, which isn't really new to me in real life, but it touched me.
OVERALL
District 9 is a great triumph and a brilliantly original take onto the Sci-Fi genre, it deserves the R rating it got because that to me made me understand it's going to literally bring out the big balls and guns that Sci-Fi isn't just about cool-looking aliens it's about how you feel toward them and the complex story that evolves between these characters. Plenty of awesome gore with humans getting blown to shit by Prawn guns and canons. A great combination of story and characters. This is one of the greatest and my all-time favorite Sci-Fi/Alien movie to this day, and it's a sign of a great movie future if many filmmakers would take up to this movie and understand what it means, same goes for H-Wood. It's worth every penny and attention, go fucking check! Or die.
