this isnt really news, every single console in the last 20 years (with the exception of one) lost money on every system sold.
The only console that makes money from hardware sales?
Nintendo Wii
The last system that made money from every sale?
Super Nintendo
Video game companies make money off of licensing and game sales, not selling systems

not true... ps2 made money... all of 3 dollars, but it still made money. Only reason I know this is from working at wal mart and seeing what the profit was. most systems make some sense of money, ps3 used to lose 300 dollars per unit.

that sounds like the profit walmart makes, not sony, though maybe its a PS2 slim, I thought that back in 2001 the PS2 was losing cash for every unit sold

takes a long ass time for a console to turn profitable, it's all made up in software and accessory sales though.

Game sales are what make the major profits not hardware sales. Sony said from the beginning that the PS3 was going to be a 10-year console. Whether they will stick by that or not who knows, but right now it's only in the third year. They may be taking losses now, but I'm sure by the end it will end up being a big profit for Sony.
