I really doubt it was staged, because unlike the eminem and bruno thing, this discredits an award as ipposed to being something controversial. (even though it is). An artist who is young and having cross-over success gets discredited less then 30 seconds after the award is given. Im sure Taylor Swift had no clue if it was staged, because I doubt her or her management would accept a deal where she is given an award, but then made to look like she didn't deserve it.
