I'm not too big on the Halos but they are just about as popular as games get. The latest is getting some decent reviews.

Anyone getting this?

i bought my last two games of the year, NHL 10, and preordered MW2, so i'm gonna wait for this to hit a lower price in 2010, or get it on some kind of deal week.

Pre-ordered Left 4 Dead 2 and Modern Warfare 2 yesterday, so those are the only 2 games I'm getting this year. Not much of a fan of Halo, but still wanna see how Halo: Reach plays out.

I'll be buying this...hesitantly. This is definitely a smokin' hot deal for all 4 people out there who haven't already bought Halo 3 and the DLC map packs. For the rest of us like myself? It's kinda a ripoff.
Basically, I'm paying $60 for:
- 6 hour single player campaign
- Firefight mode
- 3 new multiplayer levels
- Halo:Reach BETA key
The new campaign is what I'm really looking forward to. It's supposed to be Halo in an entirely new way featuring new play mechanics. Still, 6 hours is a bit on the short side and it's still grounded on the original Halo 3 engine (graphics wise).
Firefight mode sounds interesting, but lets face it, it's just Halo's version of Gears' "Horde Mode" or Call Of Duty's "Nazi Zombies". Endless waves of enemies come at you and you simply try to survive as long as possible while racking up the highest score. Not exactly groundbreaking in the slightest.
Out of the 3 new multiplayer levels, 1 of them is a remake of a Halo 2 map. So realistically, we're getting 2 new multiplayer levels. Granted, the level being remade is a great level, but it's not NEW.
A BETA key shouldn't be one of the main selling points of a game. PERIOD. If anything, it was included because Microsoft KNEW that there wasn't enough fresh content in ODST to package it as a legit $60 title.

The sad thing about some people who are buying ODST think the BETA is worth the whole purchase of the game (think they forget that the BETA won't even last for that long, there is a time limit on how long the BETA lasts).
The BETA of Reach is not a selling point of the game, you are right, but some fans believe that the BETA is also part of the price point of the game, which it isn't at all. Microsoft knew that if Bungie attached the BETA key to the game more fans will buy the game, even if the game didn't have much content to sustain the consumer (remember Crackdown? There were a lot of people who just bought it just for the Halo 3 BETA, didn't even care about the game itself, hate that mentality of some people these days who play games).
The game, I think, shouldn't be $60, but there are fans who will pay $60 for this, which Microsoft knows by heart. I think the game is great if someone doesn't have Halo 3, but I think it is only a rent if someone just wants to play the campaign once (if people like to replay the campaign, then buy the game) and firefight can't be played online with others around the world. The BETA, have a feeling it will last the same length as the Halo 3 BETA, so people shouldn't let that be their worth for a purchase.
BUT, if you can have fun with what you get in ODST, then by all have fun. If it's fun then it is worth all the money. Forgot to say that there is co-op also in the game, but I don't know if the co-op is just firefight mode.

it's a shitty piece of hardware but it's controller is much better for FPS in terms of console controllers.

I hate the PS3 controller for FPS games. The 360 controller absolutely dominates it IMO. The sticks feel "loose" compared to the 360 and they aren't spaced as well either. Don't even get me started on that damned L3 button (pushing in on the left analog stick). Then there's the fact that the controller doesn't have real triggers like the 360 either.
I know that many people (myself included) LOVED the Dualshock 2 when it came out for PS2...but that controller is seriously lacking when put next to the 360's controller.
yea pretty much sums up my thoughts.. i loved the dual shock 2, still love the dualshock 3 on ps3, but when it comes to FPS games, Xbox 360's controller just feels right, at least when it comes to consoles, we all know mouse and keyboard is gonna give the most control.

The Dualshock 3's "Sixaxis" (or whatever it's called) is borderline worthless IMO as well. I was playing Uncharted today and for some reason the sixaxis is implemented in aiming grenade throws. Cool idea, but executing a nice throw in a timely manner (when 5 guys are firing AK-47s at you) is tedious. It's just easier to get a bit closer and throw a nade from the hip.
I know that many people (myself included) LOVED the Dualshock 2 when it came out for PS2...but that controller is seriously lacking (in Dualshock 3 form of course) when put next to the 360's controller.
I will say that the d-pad for the PS3 controller is much better then the 360's d-pad however. That being said, it's not like the d-pad is that big of a deal in anything other then fighting games. Even then, the PS3 d-pad still sucks...it just doesn't suck as much as the horrible 360 d-pad.
...besides, I use a 3rd party controller for fighting games anyway...the Street Fighter "Fightpad" which trounces both controller's d-pads by a mile.

I would imagine almost every Xboxer will be getting Halo3, i'm personally not a fan of any FPS games. Well that isn't entirely true since I loved Goldeneye :confident:
Dunno which controller is better for FPS because i've haven't played any in years but I do know which is better for fighters (my fav games) :smokin2:

A stick? Truth is neither controller is sufficient for fighting games when in high level play. New Hori stick comes out in October which is sure to rival the Street Fighter IV Tournament Edition Fightstick. The PS3 version of the Hori will have Sanwa parts while the 360 version will have Seimitsu parts. Can't wait to get my hands on one!

Read an advertisement for "toys r us" today. Seems certain stores are offering this game, a $20 gift card, and some collectable figure for $60. No idea what the figure looks like, but x-mas is closing in and $20 gift card might be useful for the kiddies. Haven't been to a "toys r us" in ages... might be time to break the streak.

Update for those that care, bought it at "toys r us" through this deal. The collectable figure "the rookie" ODST figure from the McFarlane Halo collection. Considering the normal price of those figures and the $20 gift card, a farcry better than $60 just for the game elsewhere. Enjoy...

Sounds about right. Story-mode, while interesting, is really short. X-play and others have said it is mostly an expak to Halo 3's multiplayer and story mode is just added flavor. Personally, I agree. Definately not a buy for folks that do not find joy in Xbox Live.
Lack of match-making is disappointing and actually surprising. Honestly, Xbox live (and playstation network) have been up and running long enough for developers to know what features are popular. Match-making should have been at the top of the multiplayer feature list. :dislike:

Some of us should get together for some Firefight action soon. I haven't had a chance to play it with anybody else yet.
BTW, how cool is that "confetti" skull in Firefight?!?!? For those that don't know, you can activate skulls in Firefight that do different things in game. The confetti skull doesn't alter gameplay in any way, but it's a lot of fun.
Basically, any time you shoot a Grunt (in the head), his head explodes. After it explodes, confetti shoots out all over the place like a pinata. While this happens, you hear little children shouting "yay!".
lol
