I'm sure this title has been done 100 times before, but I couldnt find it on last 4 pages so if you feel this is a waste of time, lock this thread and link the older one :)
Theres 2 games I'd like to recommend to you all, and which I didnt find on quick search:
1. http://i.neoseeker.com/boxshots/R2FtZXMvTmludGVuZG9fV2lpL0FjdGlvbi9BZHZlbnR1cmU=/cursed_mountain_frontcover_large_PNKanr1V0STNjdX.jpg
This game is about yet another relative-seeking-thing, but in a very unusual landscape, Tibet, and mountains. It tells a story of this hard-boiled mountain climber searching for his a-hole brother who has gone lost when climbing this one mountain. Villagers living in the vicinity of that mountain had just recently all run away from their homes, claiming a great curse from a goddess has fallen upon all those close to it. Of course the man is skeptical and attempts to find his brother anyway.
Gameplay is a mix of RE4-3rd person shooting with Project Zeroish ghosts. Though your weapon is an enchanted pickaxe with some trinkets to it, which is pretty cool. Once you've weakened a ghost, you have to banish it with wiimote motions, which were first really frustrating to do. I though the wiimote was broken because sometimes it didnt recognise what I was doing, but later on Gamefaq walkthrough stated that you have to do them smoothly, as if you were doing a real ritual.
http://www.blogcdn.com/nintendo.joystiq.com/media/2008/11/cursedmountain1103.jpg
monk monastery, already higher than 18000 feet above the sea-line, and you even get to climb higher than that
Besides from that, the game is pretty linear, which is sad because atmosphere and landscapes of this game are FRIGGING awesome. You always feel like you're really up in the sky already, but as the game proceeds from normal villages to monk monastery, low camp before mountain climbing, and finally climbing the actual mountain, visuals are just breathtaking. You feel real great when you're actually climbing a mountain wall, watching out for weak spots, while hearing distant tantric hums among the blowing wind of a blizzard. I didnt know you could manage to do so great landscapes with Wii.
http://image.com.com/gamespot/images/2009/152/951867_20090602_790screen014.jpg
village of sherpas in a misty valley, now full of ghosts
This game isnt that scary though. I dont know why, but the game just isnt that scary. However you constantly feel this weird creepiness in everything you do. Though its not scary, its a pretty nice effect on its own, everything being little creepy all the time. Enemies are usually ghosts, but theres some really cool hindi/buddhish daemons and entities against you every once in a while.
http://www.wiinintendo.net/wp-content/uploads/2009/08/cursed_mountain14-600x351.jpg
cool hindi demon, it has to be a demon from hindu mythologies, because buddhism doesnt have any demons to it
I'd suggest trying it out for every Wii owner. Its worth it, if for nothing else, experiencing a beautiful trip in a mountain landscape.
Other recommend has actually 3 games to it, so I'm going to make it a separate post.

Penumbra series is pretty underrated horror game series. One of the scariest games I've recently played. These are actually so good games, that new Silent Hill Remake has pretty obviously taken a lot of influence from these. Which is pretty ironic, because Penumbra Black Plague in particular uses a lot of silent hillish "what the fuck is going on?"-gimmicks. But heres a list of what similarities I've noticed through the videos of Silent Hill Remake, and Penumbras.
1.Penumbras take place in antarctica, where whenever youre outside, theres lot of snow and a blizzard. In SH:Remake, town's style has been changed into icy cold, snowy style.
2. In first Penumbra, you can somewhat fight against enemies, on second game you cant, you have to either run away or hide. In SH:R, you have no weapons, you have to run away or hide from enemies. Monsters in the gameplay trailer looked a lot like ones from Penumbra Black Plague.
3. Penumbras are mostly known for its clever use physics motor in puzzles. SH:R promotes the puzzles being involved heavily on physics motor.
But anyway, first Penumbra: Overture.
Story is first pretty clicheed. A guy goes to his mother's funeral, and receives strange notes from his father who disappeared in Antarctica, telling his son not to ever try to find him. The stupid stud that he is, of course he goes to find him. In his trip, he losts his crew in a blizzard, and seeks shelter in an old abandoned mine/military outpost, where something strange is going on. As the game goes on, the game's story picks up.
http://jwtiedostot.pp.fi/pelit/kuvat__/penumbra_overture_episode_1.jpg
OOOoohhhh....crap.
So, its an FPS. Though you dont have any guns. Its a very DARK FPS. You have a flashlight, but it has limited batteries, and it still doesnt light that much way in front of you. Plus monsters in the darkness can see you very easily if with your flashlight on. You also have flares, but they're limited, and run off their gas pretty quickly. Plus they have the same drawback as flashlight. Last resort is the glow-stick, which illuminates your surroundings very shortly, but gives you more time to put it away if you hear strange sounds in dark corners. Though it also makes it possible for you to run right into a monster if youre too fast. If you crouch and be absolutely still in darkness, it gives away some of it so you can see little better. This also works as an efficient way of hiding from certain monsters.
http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c398/carlosdelangoese/PenumbraShot3.jpg
Hmmm...a corpse covered in web, strange crawling noises coming all around me, maybe it wasnt such a great idea to go through this tunnel.
Most of the time when you are venturing pitch-black corridors, you're constantly feeling this little dread, because you cant see anything in front of you, so who knows what might encounter you if youre not careful. Monsters in this first game are pretty boring, but its surprising how tense moments they could do. Giant spiders, rabid dogs, and colossal black worms are only three real enemies you confront. Still they are all very dangerous.
Puzzles are very good in this game. most of them revolve around being clever with the physics machine. Plus you have to do almost everything with your mouse. Trying to close the door with a lever when a huge worm is crawling right behind you, grabbing a hold of a bottle of nitroglycerin while trying to take it unto a pile of rocks to blow them up, etc.
The way the game scares you is the good way of making your imagination run wildly. For example there is this eerie examination room, with a huge hole in a wall, leading into pitch-black cave, and a notebook about this guy trying to hide from a huge black worm. When you start hearing noises from the cave just behind you, of course your imagination starts to run. Theres also many Innsmouth-like chasing scenes which are awesome.
http://darkzero.co.uk/img/screenshot/penumbra-over-7.jpg
This game is around 10 times darker than any screenshot you can find on google.
Overall the scares tend to lame down a bit towards the end, but its a good game nonetheless.
second game is Black Plague, and its very short, only 5 hours at most. But damn is this game scary. This game continues from where first left off, you wake up in a strange cell inside an abandoned underground research bunker. a shit-storm has happened there, and hallways are filled with these zombie-looking monsters, trying to find you. You discover theres been a virus outbreak which turns people into these things, and later on realise you've been infected as well, but have a different effect on yourself.
http://i38.photobucket.com/albums/e113/cosikaba/penumbra2009-06-1520-19-27-23_thumb.jpg
Oooooohhh....crap
You spawn a split-personality, this guy with a imp-like voice, calling himself Clarence, who desperately wants to get out of your head, and tries to kill you. And when he realises that he can manipulate your senses, and make you see, hear, or feel things, the whole game starts feeling like a really, really nightmarish mushroom trip. Last hours when Clarence really does not want you to kill him with a possible serum, makes your already hard travel to another location through a dark labyrinth filled with intelligent monsters-, even more terrifying when he obscures your vision and hearing to the point its hard to determine what is what. Theres a lot more awesome tricks and gimmicks to this game, but I'm not going to spoil them. You guys should REALLY try this game out. I'm sure even Fright Master would be frightened.
http://darkzero.co.uk/img/screenshot/penumbrabp-2.jpg
staying still in darkness makes you invisible to most monsters, but if you stare said monsters too long, your guy starts to freak out and panic, making him accidentally reveal himself.
3rd game is sort of a light epilogue to it all, where theres no monsters, and its just puzzles. So theres not much to tell from that. I bought this collection set with just 20 euros, which is pretty close to 20 dollars. 20 dollars from one good, one incredibly good and one ok game isnt bad, so you definitely should check this game out.

Good to see this thread is still here, these next 2 games I'm going to recommend as a great "get some friends and beer with you and have fun"-sort of games. Easy to learn, brainless zombie-killing fun in general.
First one is
http://www.gamevil.sk/images/Onechanbara%20Bikini%20Zombie%20Slayers%20wii%20k.jpg
This game is very stupid, very simple, and reminds me a lot of old beat-em ups where you progress a level and beat the shit out of any enemies which cross your path. And thats exactly what this game is. You play as a katana-wielding chick in weird bikini outfits, and slash zombies to tiny bits.
Doesnt sound that exciting yet, but theres 3 main things which elevate this game to a good party game.
1) Theres a LOT of blood, your sword gets smeared on it, your character gets smeared on it, even the screen gets smeared on it.
2)The game is about sexy chicks slashing zombies to bits with katanas. If that doesnt scream cheesy-"Awesome!" to you, I have to wonder what does.
3) Theres a cooperative mode.
Plot is pretty stupid and tries to be serious, but thats not the main focus of the game, usually I just skipped all the scenes where nothing was going to happen. Plus some of the voice actors are incredibly annoying, so that further encourages you to skip the story. Basically its about a woman and her sister sharing a curse in their family which have the tendency to turn them into berserk killing machines. And for some reason zombies pop up, dont know why. And in the midst of that chaos our brave heroines try to figure out why they are the way they are. Silly, like I said.
http://www.videogamesblogger.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/02/reiko-in-onechanbara.jpg
Whoa! Bayonetta!
Gameplay is pretty simple. Theres actually grounds for the fighting system to be more complex, but most the special moves are so hard to do, that youre usually content with button mashing, and I'm sure after smoking pot and drinking 5 beers, you dont really care about complex combos anyway.
http://xbox360media.ign.com/xbox360/image/article/750/750362/chambara-beauty-x-the-devil-evolution-human-20061211013242159.jpg
Most fun you get in this game, when you charge headfirst into a horde of zombies, and drown the screen with gibs and gore
What you have to care about is the blood meter in the katana on the left side though, your weapons get worse the more blood there is on them. If the blood-meter is full, your sword gets stuck on zombies, and you have to wave your Wiimote to break free, usually zombies get at least one free hit at that point. If you keep pressing Z-button and wave your Wiimote, your character waves the sword so that the blood flies away. This takes few seconds though, so you cant really do that in the middle of a zombie horde.
In battle, your character gets smeared in blood too. When the blood-meter for your character icon gets full, she goes into a rampage mode, doubling your damage and speed. The downside is, you gradually lose health in this mode, so you either have to heal yourself with certain items in rampage, or stop the rampage mode with items or save spots. Usually you dont wish to go into rampage when going through the map, and reserve all the on/off rampage items for bosses.
Theres different set of zombies, normal zombies (with chainsaws bigger than they are), cop zombies with guns, dog zombies, crow zombies, weird "spider"-zombies, soldier zombies (with miniguns!), and huge giant zombies. Most of them go down with button mashing, but you have to be little careful with few of them, listen their attack noises and dodge at the right time. You can get 2 other characters to play with, and a whole bunch of new costumes for each if you do certain missions in Free Play or Survivor mode.
http://hg101.kontek.net/oneechanbara/onechanwii-8.jpg
Every character has a second fighting style too. The cowboy-chick can wield 2 swords, schoolgirl chick ditches the swords and fights zombies with her bare fists.
Overall, this is a good game when youre on the right set of mind. I'm sure for most of the people here that wont be a problem, since many of us know the appeal of bad but gory b-horror flicks. Nowadays its pretty cheap too, 10-15 euros/dollars depending on where you live. Theres an xbox360-version too, but you have to buy extra characters and everything from Live, which is quite a letdown.
PS: I think theres an actual movie about this thing. I'd really like to know if UHM has a review of it anywhere. If not, then they should go and review it. :)

2nd one is this:
http://www.nextgn.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/10/Zombie-Apocalypse.jpg
Fallout 3-ripoff title screen alone should scream how brainless this game is. Basically its top-view L4D. Except way more simple and quicker. Closest games to this one might be good old Alien Phobias (freeware games, if you havent played them yet, google them out, theyre fun!)
The first time I actually ever even played this, was in a home-party. Everyone was growing weary of the newest Tekken, so we were thinking about something simpler for more people to enjoy at once, and then on quick Xbox-live search we found it. And I gotta say this is a perfect party-game. Even the sportsy-guy on the back who says all games are for nerds, screamed for a controller for himself.
http://gamersyndrome.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/10/zombie_apocalypse_002-640x.jpg
More you progress the game, more theres zombies. Later levels make your screen literally full of zombies.
Controls are very simple too. You move with left stick, and you shoot with right one. You dont need to push it, your guy shoots in the direction where you turn your right-stick at. left shoulder buttons let you use a chainsaw, which is a fun tool, if bit risky since zombies can kill you with one hit if youre not careful. My favorite is the second mode of chainsaw which you use with RT-button. It sticks the chainsaw on one zombie's gut, and then proceeds to gut the zombie into two.
http://tech2.in.com/media/images/2009/Apr/img_137802_zombie_ap_1.jpg
hmmm, I think I'll choose Francis...uh I mean Jimmy, yeah.
Weapons range from standard uzi to shotgun, flamethrower, minigun, and akimbo pistols which are funnily better than your uzi. Theres also teddy bear bombs which you can throw, which act much like Pipebombs in L4D. Molotov is also an option.
Zombies can kill you in one hit, but if youre quick enough, you can get off from their grasp before they fall on you. This doesnt work with fat construction worker-zombies because they weigh too much. You can get more lives by hanging around and protecting civilians for a while, which pop up around the arena. Corpses of zombies also leave this weird green puddle of slime on the ground, which slightly hinders youre movement if you run through them.
https://xphhka.blu.livefilestore.com/y1mxdUiNvH4n0_FS5JjibH9a-8WNbZncCM5Xoff98kzKca-EunpcqEWneKN_b1vDHDiObjzXnI3IH1mALP_qOO-SOspatQeHMkY5U3Q2pqRBJDRRcg5rxA_rjDEfaLJc8ZhYWLwAb_HgtO 2Y2aKIj7_WA/zombie_apocalypse4.jpg
Cowabungaaa!
Party game or not, levels get freaky hard the more you survive. even with full 4-players, chances are that youre going to die after 20 levels or so. Usually sticking together, back against back leads to best results in surviving. Many levels have fun death traps to them where you can shoot zombies into if you time it right, like fallen plane's functional rotor, or car-crushing device. Some levels are dark and you only have a small area of light around your guy. Theres many different zombies in the game, usually the designs are very wacky, like knife-throwing granny-zombies.
http://lvlone.com/wp-content/gallery/ZombieApocalypse-1149-40/zombie_apocalypse_015.jpg
Best experience you get with 4-players. Every end of a level shows who killed the most and got the best score, so he can show it off to his friends who gnash their teeth and try to kill more zombies next round.
All in all its brainless fun. You dont really play this game else than if you have a load of friends with you, and fridge full of beer. Dont remember how much it costs in xbox-points, but it cant really be more than 10-15 in dollars/euros. If your xbox is lacking good party games, get it now!

Next 3 will all be freeware games, and I'll provide download links, which should be pretty fast (at least for europeans). None of them are exactly horror games, but they have common horror themes, or are just otherwise bizarre.
First up: Snowman In Hell
http://mlab.taik.fi/snowman/images/shots/ss2.jpg
Very weird Finnish university's school project, a freeware game inspired by Divine Comedy, where your main character is a snowman who had committed a mysterious crime and was thrown to hell. While slowly melting away, he discovers a skull of a lost soul who calls himself Vergilius. He promises to show the Snowman the way to the icy level of hell, if he just takes Vergilius with him.
http://mlab.taik.fi/snowman/images/shots/ss8.jpg
flashbacks look like theyve been taken from an old film-noir movie
Story is told in cool and atmospheric pictures of hell, and black and white- detective film style flashbacks from Vergilius's past as a human. But the first thing you notice right on when you play the game is how weird it looks. Snowman and monsters are mostly made from clay, but everything is made from the stuff found in university's garbage bin. This gives a really weird but fun look for all the distinct levels of hell. From the river of boiling blood to rotting forest of suicides.
http://mlab.taik.fi/snowman/images/shots/ss1.jpg
You can steal snow and put it either on your body or head from fellow suffering snowmen, but your head might not fit from certain areas if you make it too big
Surprisingly such a simple-looking game also has its own physics motor, which is mostly used in puzzles, involving snowman's detachable head. Most monsters can be killed by throwing your head around, but theres also other obstacles like hellfire, amongst many other things. This is a very difficult game, and most likely youre going to die a lot, but levels are usually pretty short and lives are infinite so it isnt so vexing (Except the last level, which is outright diabolical).
http://mlab.taik.fi/snowman/images/shots/ss3.jpg
If you like to collect weirdass minigames, then this is a must for your collection.

Well depends on what system you prefer...Alone in the dark was good on 360. For Wii resident evil 5 is a given....but thats really for res fans. If you still got a PS2 i recommend the suffering it was a good game. Also for PC or 360 (FEAR) is a great game and will leave you jumpin out of your seat at every twist and turn.....and if you want to go old school there is always silent hill which has many sequels to it.

Yakouga
http://lh3.ggpht.com/idealsoftblog/SMld_scHtVI/AAAAAAAABvk/kAcgZLSYOlM/titl_thumb%5B2%5D.jpg
Yakouga is an old school ultra-hard shoot'em'up game, but what makes it different from all other freeware shmups out there, is its trips to H.R Giger's head. Breasts, weird humanoid creatures, eyeballs and entrails are a common sight in this game.
http://freeware.remakes.org/images/yakouga/sc_10.jpg
like in traditional shmup, the screen is usually filled with enemy projectiles
This game is very hard, most of the concentration you need in this game is almost solely put on dodging deadly things. There is no plot outside of "cute flying chibi flies around the pit of biomechanical orgy hell, and shoots everything that moves", but for a game like this you don't really need a good plot anyway.

Japanese language might be hard to understand, and this game doesnt run with all systems, for starters, usual keys with most japanese shmup games are arrow keys for moving and z and x for shooting/doing something.
Not much else to say really, game is simple and short fun, but its free so you can't really complain.

Wasn't aware Resident Evil 5 was on Wii and to my knowledge it is not. The Suffering is good but not scary. FEAR didn't bother me at all and I was let down actually. And to this day I don't understand how Silent Hill has the reputation it has. Give me Resident Evil 1 and 2 and Dead Space now that is survival horror. Resident Evil 5 is more action then anything. If you like slashers give Manhunt a try that is hands down one of the best ps2 games ever made.

Redlynx is a finnish game studio notable for doing a lot of very good old-school style of games. Their most popular game is probably Trials HD, downloadable from Xbox Live or as a hard copy for PC. Alien Phobia is a series which has more of a cult following than mainstream attention. But what makes this just another "one man against dozens of monsters in birdseye view"-game so good?
http://www.redlynx.com/phobiaIII/media/bigshots-4.jpg
Its INSANE amount of monsters, thats what! both first and Alien Phobia 2 were more of endurance rounds where you were supposed to gain a high score before the inevitable death came. Phobia 3 has established some story, backround, and mission system to it. There are only 6 missions, but they are so hard that its a surprise you can survive the first one alive. Even if you would die, your score is stalled to your score-list, so beating the first mission isnt necessary to unlock 2nd mission, however it takes lot longer to do so. Story is hilariously desperate for the humanity, and the human colony is so stereotypically cruel, that a standard citizens getting likvidated for no real reason is a common everyday activity. Insane texts which the computer shows in the up right corner in mission selection are very funny, so funny that I once stood there just so I could read them all. Game has some kickass metal-electro to it, which keeps the adrenaline pumped up when youre performing the alien genocide.

This is a pretty small amount of creatures in screen for this game
Arrow keys move and space shoots. special weapons are very badass and powerful, like a cannon which shoots miniature nuclear bombs in a wide arc, or marks which call in a missile airstrike to deal with the designated area. Your machinegun isnt pushover either, but unfortunately its destruction-arc is very narrow.

Menu Screen layout
There is a multiplayer survivor mode, where 2 players fend off against an endless army of monsters. Only problem is that they have to use the same keyboard. Given you probably keep at least 2 buttons pressed down continously, with older and certain newer keyboards other player's controls may not respond at all if theres more than 3 buttons pressed down at once.
Again, this game is a freeware, and you can download it here. (http://www.redlynx.com/phobiaIII/download.html). Mission 1 gameplay here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3wmJQtbw9K8&feature=related
Happy hunting!

PS: I think theres an actual movie about this thing. I'd really like to know if UHM has a review of it anywhere. If not, then they should go and review it. :)

From what I understand from many online reviews, the first movie is very boring. Shame, because I wouldnt mind a bad movie if it would be unintentionally funny. I hate to say this but Uwe Boll movies are like this. I don't mind watching them because they make me laugh of just how bad they are.

Borderline thread necromancy, but hey its my thread and I've decided to update it with a game:
http://www.crypticcomet.com/Images/SI/SIbanner.jpg
I bought this game a year ago, but only now have I truly started playing it. Game's idea is to become hell's new ruler after The Devil has disappeared. Thing is, theres up to 6 other archfiends who also want the same seat. The main focus of the game isnt much of conquering everything, but being the best at demonic politics in a hell's conclave.
Graphically the game is very simple, board game like, although illustrations on cards are really nice. If you can get over that fact, theres a really complex and refreshingly original strategy-game ahead of you. Game starts and ends with conclave tokens, theyre randomly picked every time some archfiend get his/her turn to be the regent, so the time of one game varies. Before all conclave tokens have been picked, your goal is to have the most amount of prestige, so the conclave chooses you as the new leader. Theres literally so many ways to get prestige that listing all of them here would take up way too long. But basically you do anything productive and you get prestige. At the beginning of the game its really important to conquer as many hexes on the map as possible, since they tend to give you prestige over time, map is usually small, and all places have been taken very quickly, most of the game concentrates on politics afterwards.
http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/images/10/jan/whowillrulehell.jpg
Politics in hell can be real weird. You cannot attack anyone (except possible attack from the tyrant in heaven) with no reason. You can demand something from other archfiend, if he accepts and gives you what you demand, you cannot demand anything from him for a while. But if he refuses, you get vendetta. But even then you have to determine to the conclave on how long your campaign is going to be, what you're going to conquer and how much time its going to take. If you dont success in your goals, you lose prestige. Only after vendetta has turned into blood feud can you freely attack anyone. You can insult someone, resulting in him needing to claim vendetta on you, otherwise he would lose prestige.
Conquering isnt the only available way to win though, there are many possible ways to get prestige, and many possible ways to win despite having the prestige. My favorite is a really expensive "Kingmaker"-perk, which gives you the ability to choose one of your rivals, and if he wins, you can step from the shadows and declare yourself as the winner. You can also turn secondary objectives which -if you complete them- gives you bonus prestige at the end of the game.
What also gives complexity to the game is the fact you can only do 2 things in your turn. You can get resources by demanding tribute from your vassals and citisens, and what resource you get is entirely dependant on luck. If you buy attributes to your archfiend with resources, you can boost your spells, protective spells, have more than 2 things to do per turn, or have more resources.
Also what makes things really unpredictable is events and event cards. Sometimes events happen randomly, sometimes any player can draw and use an event card which you get in your turn as a prestige. One bummer of an event was how a host of angels flew from Heaven and laid waste on the strongest armies of each archfiend. You can also be a real asshole in this game without the need of straightforward attacking. I remember spending half of my game stealing resources from others with spells, making them unable to do much of anything.
Anyway theres so many changing things in this game that I can't really explain them all, worst thing about this thing is theres hardly any manuals online, and the pdf in the main site is a broken piece of shit, so you have to google up some advice if youre confused. Other thing is the fact theres no other multiplayer than Email-multiplayer. Although such an Email-multiplayer mode would really fit forums well like this one. If you indeed buy this game, just call me and I'll send a gaming session to your email. One good thing about Email-sessions is theres no hurry playing it, and you can do your turn basically anywhere you have the game installed, like during your working break.
if you want to read out how fun can a multiplayer match become, read here: http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/tag/gameboys-from-hell/
EDIT: I hope anyone who has played Amnesia here at this point, has already bought Penumbra trilogy :P

I would recommend Fatal Frame, Fatal Frame 2 and most of the Clock Towers are pretty good as well.
