View Full Version : For those who know LCD TV's
cataclysm vol.2

I've had a small LCD TV for about two years now, and recently I've noticed that these kind of dark marks show up on the screen. I can't really see them unless there is something on the screen that's a fairly bright or light color. But these marks aren't really in the shape of anything, they're just kind of like, small curvy waves (the best way I figure to describe them).
They don't seem to be there when the TV turns, but do after a short while. So I'm not sure if this is a over-heating issue or if this is something with the screen, and it's only in two spots. Top left corner and in the center of the screen.
The reason I'm asking is because I don't know shit about LCD's, so I was wondering if anybody could possibly tell me what I might be experiencing, if this is something that could be fixed, or if this could be a sign my TV is going out given it's age.

Possibly burn ins :hmmm:

What's the model of the TV? I'm not sure if it'd be a burn-in issue if you say it doesn't appear when you turn on the TV. Burn-ins are constant and never-changing, unless you have some sort of screensaver to remove it.
If you haven't yet, I'd recommend just doing a google search to see if others have experienced an issue like this, because I've never heard of it. My guess is that the TV is old and starting to go out, but that's only a guess.
Aside from doing a search, I'd recommend gently tapping the screen in the parts that have this strange issue and see if that makes any sort of difference.

Not sure what it could be, but LCD TVs don't get burn in...only Plasmas do. Hell, even Plasmas don't get burn in anymore unless you abuse the damn thing though.
Your best bet is to head towards www.avsforum.com and ask them in their LCD forum. That site is awesome for HDTV info and it has answers for basically any question you could ask.

I remember reading a while back that LCD TV's do get burn in, but it's not as common as Plasmas.

Two years isn't even that old. Is this a name-brand TV or one of those cheap brands. If it's a no name brand it could just be a cheaply made screen that wore out fast and is now showing signs of defects.

Yeah they get Burn-Ins
It's not so much "burn in" as it is "image persistence" (as manufacturers like to call it). It's basically the LCD version of the Plasma's "image retention" (commonly confused with the dreaded burn in). Except for the most abnormally extreme cases, this is never permanent.
Noob!!! :mummy:
To the OP, try leaving the TV on for an extended period of time without any static images on the screen. That's probably my best advice (coming from somebody who owns a Plasma and has experienced image retention). IF, your problem actually is image persistence that is. If it isn't, them I'm out of ideas for you.

I'm sorry. :(
Actually I've been trying to get some better information about these 'spots'.
First of all, my TV is a Toshiba 20HLV86 LCD/DVD combo...http://www.amazon.com/Toshiba-20HLV86-20-Inch-HDTV-Player/dp/B000ES75WE
And yes, I know I would have gained better results by just going straight to google or looking up the brand to see if anyone had a similar problems, but the problem was that I had no idea what was wrong with my TV so I didn't know where to start. Which is why I came here, since I know there are quite a few tech-savvy folks here that might have been able to give me an idea as to what was or is going on.
First thing I checked was after leaving it off all night was to see if the dark spot appear when the TV first comes on, and it does, but it's really light and hard to see. It isn't until about an hour or (maybe less maybe more) that the spot becomes darker, (basically it gets darker once the TV warms up) but once again you can only really see it if the image on the TV is light colored.
I thought it might have been a "burned in" issue but then I couldn't think of why since the spot is up in the top left corner of the TV and isn't in the shape of anything. Since all I do is watch movies on this TV, there isn't ever anything that's there long enough to become a persistent image. My TV is susceptible to it though; long story short a DVD menu was left on for too long and when I switched to something else I still had the ghost image of the previous menu. Though it went away after a short while and this was way before this current problem.
I tried lightly tapping on it and nothing really happened, the spot and the screen distorted a bit like it normally would do if you were to touch it.
Thanks everyone for the help, I guess I'll just go straight to the source and see if I can get any info from Toshiba or Toshiba users as to what's going or what I should do. And I'll also check out that forum you suggested CHUD.

What? Shitty brand? Shitty TV? Being a DVD combo?
It was a gift so I didn't really care or bother to do any research on the product, since it was intended to be nothing more than a bedroom TV.

All of the above. Basically any TV that is a "combo" with something will be POS. Why else you think they gotta combine it with something? :whew:

LED is a fad. It won't even be around in 3 years. Besides, there's still better Plasmas out there than LEDs...and Plasma is supposedly "dead" according to those who know nothing about HDTVs at least.

LED is not just a fad. LED is basically a more advanced version of LCD, as the price of LED technology comes down eventually it will replace regular LCD all together.

LED is not just a fad. LED is basically a more advanced version of LCD, as the price of LED technology comes down eventually it will replace regular LCD all together.
Basically, an LED will produce darker blacks than a regular LCD. This is because of the lighting (a standard LCD has basically a giant backlit screen...which washes out colors). Pretty much all the benefits of going LED over LCD is from a picture quality standpoint.
Even so, an LED TV still doesn't produce as nice and varied black levels as a good Plasma TV. They are getting closer, but it's just hilarious that LCD/LED makers are trying to give consumers the quality of a "dead" platform (Plasma). It took them years to get this far to competing with Plasma, but during that time, Plasma makers virtually got rid of all the negatives of Plasma tech...making them all around better sets (unless your TV is in a freaking sun room or something). LED and LCD makers are finally about to catch up with Plasma, but at what cost to you?
This brings up the question, why pay for a "better" LCD (LED) when it still can't match a quality Plasma TV? Even the nicest LED will cost more than the nicest Plasma (the almighty Pioneer Kuro). So really, what's the point? Not even getting into the costly Kuro, there's plenty of other Plasmas that look just as good if not better than the top line LED TVs...yet they cost MUCH less to buy.
And yes, it is a fad. LCD is the most popular HDTV out there, so LED was marketed as the "step above" LCD (which is it, even though LED actually IS STILL an LCD). It's not the best tech, and it won't last long however with the emergence of OLED tech. That is completely a "fad". OLED will eventually replace EVERYTHING once they manage to become affordable. That's projected in around 3yrs or so.
True, the prices will drop over the next few years on LED TVs. But at that point, you can simply pick up an excellent Plasma for dirt cheap. Again, what's the point?

I think one thing you are ignoring CHUD is the size issue. Manufacturers rarely put out a "good" plasma under 50"
Yes they probably exist, but the LEDs are much more available in high quality sets ranging from 32"-55"
For my $ if I was going over 50", I'd definitely go plasma (I already have 1), but for say the 32-42" range for like a secondary or bedroom TV I'd take an LED any day

Although I know Plasma iz still currently the best when it comes to movies, I'd still prefer an LCD simply because it's less hassle to maintain, cheaper, doesn't have horrible glare, and a lot lighter. The picture quality is almost the same to top it off, so I personally prefer LCD right now.

01-06-2010, 11:36 AM
Except for the weight I think you are wrong on all those points fright. Plasmas have the same maintenance as LCDs, they are MUCH cheaper than LCDs, and the glare issue was taken care of like 5 years ago, of course a big ass tv shouldn't be in a high light room anyway. Yes Plasmas aRe heavier, but 1 person can still easily lift a 50" plasma, my 27" CRT is still way heavier than my 50"

42" Panasonic G10: $860 (+ free shipping)
Although not "small" it's still a helluva deal considering that it's the same TV as the current Panasonic G15. It's not even an old Plasma either, as it was released earlier this year. All the G15 is is basically a slimmer version of the G10. The G10/G15 is consistently rated as one of the top Plasmas out there (and that's just the "entry level" plasma from Panny).
The funny thing is that a 32" LED from Samsung will run you close to $1100. Smaller screen, higher price, not any better picture quality than the Panny...what's the point? I mean, unless you can't fit a 42" TV in your bedroom...but damn, I'd find some room for it!

Well unfortunately, they have this stigma around them because they were the first mass consumer flatscreen HDTV. I still hear it all the time:
- Plasmas are too expensive
- They get burn in easily
- Not good for gaming
Reality is that Plasmas have been the opposite of all those points for years now.
