Not exactly a horror movie....

I vaguely remember details about some kind of action type movie. I keep thinking along the lines of Volcano etc.
The movie started with a guy and his wife and son moving away from where they originally lived because of some kind of natural disaster, I think it was an earthquake and it may have possibly killed their daughter?
I'm pretty sure that they moved to New York because of their lack of earthquakes and the guy gets a service job (like Police or Fire service), his son then goes on a field trip to a tall building when an earthquake happens and its along the lines of the natural disaster movies....anyone have any ideas?
