Never cared for The Shining so this doesn't bother me in the very least.
:hehe: I appreciate his work....just found The Shining to be a tad boring. :stare:
Boring? Not kool.. very not kool.
If only it were directed by Rob Zombie. :hehe:
I just found it slow moving and boring. Was it cast well? Yes - especially JN. Was it shot well....pretty much....Kubrick films are meant to be viewed on the big screen...this flick has big features and seeing it on a small screen really lessens the effect the director intended...but all in all I didn't care for the characters. Kubrick lost me in this dream scape and had me more into the visual aspects of the film rather than the characters and their issues. The book certainly worked on that level - I cared very much about everyone hence the boring comment. Got sick of all the pretty pictures on the screen.
OK I take that comment back :whew:
The Shining imo is the best movie ever made. Kubrick was a genius and the fact that he made it his own is what makes it so special. If he made it the way King wrote it then it would not be anywhere near as popular as it is or as good as it is for that matter. It might be slow paced but I find nothing boring about it at all.
The extended version of The Shining has more character development. But it's boring and lame. There is a point where it just falls into bland exposition and you don't need it. Everything about the characters you need to know is already in the film, anyway. Jack's alcoholism is pretty strongly hinted at, and the history of abuse with Danny. The Shining is trying to work on a sub-conscious level.
But if you want more character development and background exposition, you can watch the extended version of The Shining, or even the 1997 tv version.
:hehe:
Some people actually like the tv version, although I can't understand why. :shrugs:
I didn't even like the first shining movie. I can't stand Jack Nicholson in it or most movies he appears in. He doesn't come off as scary or crazy just stupid. I'm not sure why opinion's changed on the movie over the years but when it was originally released it had lots of negative reviews and lots of people hated it now it seems like everyone loves it.
