Catwoman (2004) - why do people say this is a bad movie? It ain't bad, it's fun. Halle Berry is sexy. I liked this movie, screw the haters. Yeah, thumb down this post.. trolls. :dance4:
Because it is a bad movie.
It is bad. And fun? Only for laughing at how bad it is, for dumping all over the source material of an endlessly interesting DC villain and wasting its potential. It's only fun for being so bad.Quote:

Agreed.Quote:

It's fair enough you like the movie. If you like it in a so bad it's good kind of way as a guilty pleasure then the more power to you. But if you defend it as a good movie then I and anybody else who actually has good taste has the right to challenge you about it and question your own taste being you know a movie discussion forum and it doesn't make them trolls. Someone who has a problem with people disagreeing with them rationally for disliking a movie they like and accuses them of being trolls is in fact a troll themselves.Quote:

What makes it so bad? Have you even watched the movie, or do you just hate on it because it's popular to do so?
It doesn't even have anything to do with the DC villain character 'Catwoman' (aside from the name). It's its own thing.Quote:

So you are saying I have bad taste if I defend it as a good movie?Quote:

And you are calling me a troll? :hmmm: ..very interesting..
I never said anything bad about people not liking the movie. I'd just like to know why its so hated. Its like if I don't agree that's a bad movie, that makes me somebody who has bad taste.. what a load of BS.
Of course, I've seen it and I've just given you my reasons for not liking it. Here's some others - both the story and characterization is terribly weak and the action set-pieces are flat. Halle Berry is its only redeemable feature. I haven't given you any reason to doubt that I've seen it and I only dislike a movie because I genuinely don't like it.
Exactly. It's such a wasteQuote:

If you think Catwoman is a genuinely good movie when it clearly isn't then I have the right to discuss that with you and disagree. And yes, question your taste as well.Quote:

If you think someone challenging you in a constructive manner is a troll then maybe discussion forums aren't for you. You specifically called anyone who hates the film (and that's justifiable) to be haters and trolls, and that just isn't the case.Quote:

You never asked for people's opinions in your original post. If you think Catwoman is good when it obviously isn't to anybody who understands film then yes you have bad taste. if you enjoy it as a guilty pleasure acknowledging that it's of poor quality but find it entertaining for those reasons then I'm happy for you.Quote:

EDIT: Your question was rhetorical.
I was just joking about the 'troll' comment.. hence the smiley.. of course I don't think that people who don't like the movie are trolls. They're entitled to their opinion.
What people don't understand, is this movie is directed by Pitof, who is a french visual effects supervisor/director/writer/producer. Specifically, this guy has worked with the likes of Jean Pierre Jeunet. That's why this film is more in the visual/stylistic realm then in plot and characterisation. Watch his previous french film, Vidocq (2001) to see what I'm talking about..
Also, this film is quite revolutionary as it stars a black female superhero. People should at least support it for that reason.
That's one of the reasons why it's such a failure because a superhero origin film needs strong story and characters for the audience to identify with. That's one of the appeals of comic books and it takes much more than just being visually stunning to translate successfully to screen.
It would be revolutionary in that respect if the movie wasn't such a piece of shit. There is no reason to support it at all.Quote:

I agree about the strong story and characters.. but I thought Halle's character was plenty identifiable, being a shy kind of girl who gets superpowers. Like a lot of other superhero movies. Even as a guy, I can relate to that aspect. Besides, it's a fantasy movie... the story and characters were fine for this kind of movie.
Wow, you really seem to hate this movie. At least you must admit that it's entertaining. Unlike Elektra, which I found flat and boring.Quote:

The film being fantasy doesn't come into as an excuse for poor writing. One of the best things about the original Star Wars trilogy is its lovable characters and relatable themes.
I don't hate it I just don't care for it as I forgot all about it until I saw your post. No it's just an awful, awful film. I vaguely remember Elektra but I at least remember it being terrible.Quote:

Maybe you should give the film another chance. I think a lot of people just want to jump on the hate train because it's cool to hate this movie.. so they go in with the wrong attitude and come out hating it. But the movie actually has a lot of fans - https://www.facebook.com/pages/Catwoman/107623375927221 - it has over 200K likes on Facebook.
No chance of that happening. I've seen it twice (at a cinema and I caught it on TV) and that was enough.
Well I'm not one of them. I'm capable of making up my own mind about a film judging it on the quality of its filmmaking alone and this one is a stinker.Quote:

That means nothing other than that there's 200,000 people out there with terrible taste.Quote:

If so many people genuinely like bad filmmmaking such as 'Catwoman' then there's nothing else to say other than that's a helluva a lot of people with terrible taste. Quantity of opinions doesn't equal quality of opinions. I bet most of those people couldn't justify why it's a good film. The only good reason for someone to like it is if they get a kick out of watching bad movies for guilty pleasures which is fair enough.
Some people just don't like camp, while others do. Which is fair enough. Different strokes for different folks. As for "justifying why it's a good film" - http://www.efilmcritic.com/review.ph...1&reviewer=416 that review just about sums it up.
Your original argument for ‘Catwoman’ being a good film wasn't that it was camp but that it was steeped in visual stylishness. Either way neither aspect alone constitutes a worthy addition to the superhero genre. Especially, if it was campy such as for example the excrement on screen that is Batman & Robin.
This review doesn't justify it as a good film at all...Quote:

Terrible films to reference in comparison to the film in review.Quote:
It's more of an athletic you-go-girl fable in the tradition of the Charlie's Angels movies
One of its biggest mistakes was that it didn't draw from such rich source material. This isn't Catwoman the real character is Selina Kyle.
Everything else this laughable 4 star review argues for just points out the film's weaknesses. It has a poor story and poor characters especially the villains and the action sequences are instantly forgettable. Visual eye candy maybe but that doesn't make for a good film.
